[00:00:05] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm Lucy And I'm Peter
[00:00:25] [SPEAKER_02]: And this is Let It Rip, The Bear Cast, Episode 7
[00:00:29] [SPEAKER_01]: This episode we're covering The Bear, Season 3, Episode 9, Apologies, and Episode 10, Forever
[00:00:37] [SPEAKER_02]: The finale Yeah, we made it!
[00:00:39] [SPEAKER_02]: We made it to the end of Season 3 with a slightly weird episode numbering strategy and a lot
[00:00:46] [SPEAKER_02]: of travelling
[00:00:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's been an interesting journey. I've had fun working at what things kind of work
[00:00:53] [SPEAKER_01]: for us and what things don't. I think it's been interesting going back and forth about
[00:00:59] [SPEAKER_01]: what we want to do with the cooking segment, which has kind of been the neat little thing.
[00:01:02] [SPEAKER_01]: And we've tried a lot of different kinds of things there. I know we started out really
[00:01:07] [SPEAKER_01]: going for kind of full recipes from the show and then we went off on a bunch of little
[00:01:12] [SPEAKER_01]: frolics of our own, which is kind of cool.
[00:01:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely.
[00:01:15] [SPEAKER_01]: We nearly... there is a bit of a road less travelled that you remember skipping way, way ahead.
[00:01:28] [SPEAKER_01]: We hear in the final episode a whole lot of conversations about some of the recipes
[00:01:34] [SPEAKER_01]: that the famous chefs cooked.
[00:01:36] [SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
[00:01:37] [SPEAKER_01]: There was one of those that I found that I thought you'd have really enjoyed cooking.
[00:01:43] [SPEAKER_01]: What was it?
[00:01:43] [SPEAKER_01]: It was.
[00:01:45] [SPEAKER_01]: Was it the potato surprise?
[00:01:47] [SPEAKER_01]: I think it's hot and cold potato.
[00:01:49] [SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, I looked at that and thought, oh, but I pity we missed that.
[00:01:54] [SPEAKER_01]: But I think in terms of the things we're actually going to want to talk about tonight,
[00:01:58] [SPEAKER_01]: we went a better route.
[00:02:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, to be honest with listeners, our plan had actually been to do the beef sandwich
[00:02:06] [SPEAKER_02]: for this episode. However, however...
[00:02:09] [SPEAKER_03]: However.
[00:02:10] [SPEAKER_02]: We currently have family visiting Chicago.
[00:02:13] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:02:13] [SPEAKER_02]: And we felt it might be better to wait for some jardinair to come back to us.
[00:02:18] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we did a lot of reading about this.
[00:02:20] [SPEAKER_01]: It is a very distinctively Chicago ingredient.
[00:02:24] [SPEAKER_02]: We do know that we can make it, but for some reason I'm kicking up a bit of a stink
[00:02:28] [SPEAKER_02]: about making an inordinate amount of...
[00:02:30] [SPEAKER_01]: We would have to make a bucket of it.
[00:02:33] [SPEAKER_02]: So the thing is we wouldn't have to, but if we didn't then we'd have to half all the quantities.
[00:02:37] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, more than half?
[00:02:38] [SPEAKER_01]: I think a jar, you know, you'd buy a cauliflower and kind of like chip a little bit off the side.
[00:02:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so essentially we're waiting for a contraband jardinair,
[00:02:47] [SPEAKER_02]: but we thought what we might do for our next episode in an indeterminate amount of time,
[00:02:51] [SPEAKER_02]: probably in September, is make the sandwich, have a cooking heavy episode,
[00:02:57] [SPEAKER_02]: and maybe answer some listener questions.
[00:02:59] [SPEAKER_02]: That would be nice, wouldn't it?
[00:03:00] [SPEAKER_02]: Culinary or otherwise.
[00:03:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that could be fun.
[00:03:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and the other exciting thing in our culinary lives is sitting right in front of us at the moment.
[00:03:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Molly?
[00:03:11] [SPEAKER_02]: No, not the cat.
[00:03:14] [SPEAKER_01]: We're getting a new kitchen.
[00:03:15] [SPEAKER_02]: We're getting a new kitchen.
[00:03:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I hope that works out.
[00:03:18] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm so excited.
[00:03:19] [SPEAKER_02]: We're not getting a new cooker or hob though.
[00:03:21] [SPEAKER_01]: No, because they're fine.
[00:03:23] [SPEAKER_02]: They're fine.
[00:03:24] [SPEAKER_02]: They're fine.
[00:03:25] [SPEAKER_02]: But yes, we will get rid of our absolute shit heap kitchen that we have been hating ever since we moved in.
[00:03:31] [SPEAKER_02]: You may think we're exaggerating.
[00:03:32] [SPEAKER_02]: You may think we're being divas, but it is pretty bad.
[00:03:36] [SPEAKER_02]: There's one cupboard that you just open and you're essentially just looking outside.
[00:03:39] [SPEAKER_02]: I call that the spider cupboard.
[00:03:40] [SPEAKER_02]: And then we found out recently that our sink isn't actually being held up by anything.
[00:03:45] [SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, we're looking forward to getting a new kitchen and getting cooking in a slightly nicer environment than what we currently have.
[00:03:51] [SPEAKER_01]: I would say if the writers of the show about our lives had put in there that we would record our final episode
[00:04:01] [SPEAKER_01]: about a cooking show surrounded by the parts of a kitchen.
[00:04:06] [SPEAKER_01]: I'd say that's really on the nose.
[00:04:08] [SPEAKER_02]: They would wouldn't they?
[00:04:10] [SPEAKER_02]: What is the best thing you've eaten this week?
[00:04:14] [SPEAKER_01]: Your chicken chilli, white chicken chilli.
[00:04:17] [SPEAKER_02]: The white chicken chilli I made was a leftover chicken.
[00:04:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it was really good.
[00:04:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I really enjoyed that as well.
[00:04:23] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that was pretty delicious.
[00:04:24] [SPEAKER_02]: I thought the roast chicken that we made that we'll talk about later in the episode was really very good.
[00:04:28] [SPEAKER_02]: But I was pleased with the white chicken chilli because it was a new recipe that we've not tried before.
[00:04:33] [SPEAKER_02]: And I usually hate sweet corn.
[00:04:36] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I took some swings.
[00:04:37] [SPEAKER_02]: I usually hate sweet corn but I incorporated some sweet corn.
[00:04:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Unfortunately, it was very good.
[00:04:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Tonight we ate a dominoes.
[00:04:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yes we did.
[00:04:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Slinges and roundabouts in our household and that.
[00:04:48] [SPEAKER_02]: So we should get into talking about these episodes.
[00:04:52] [SPEAKER_02]: In general, what did you think of the Bear Season 3 Episode 9 Apologies?
[00:05:00] [SPEAKER_01]: I think I liked it.
[00:05:04] [SPEAKER_01]: I really liked all the times that the show has taken really big swings.
[00:05:13] [SPEAKER_01]: Much like you with cooking a white chicken chilli.
[00:05:16] [SPEAKER_01]: I feel like at times the Bear has done some lovely things with especially the soundscapes.
[00:05:24] [SPEAKER_01]: Some of the music, especially some of the things that...
[00:05:27] [SPEAKER_01]: Very tricky.
[00:05:28] [SPEAKER_01]: Some of the nine-inch nails.
[00:05:32] [SPEAKER_01]: There's just a fantastic scene relatively early in the episode where we have this really intense soundscape
[00:05:39] [SPEAKER_01]: and then a huge volume of soapy water being thrown across the countertops.
[00:05:44] [SPEAKER_01]: It was just gorgeous.
[00:05:45] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it was real.
[00:05:47] [SPEAKER_01]: It cuts to a very natural scene where it's just Carmi and Marcus cleaning up.
[00:05:53] [SPEAKER_01]: But I think it felt unreal because it was just a completely absurd volume of water.
[00:05:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was quite a lot of water.
[00:06:01] [SPEAKER_01]: And shot from a strange angle as well.
[00:06:04] [SPEAKER_01]: And I think speaking about the music since we're going down that path already,
[00:06:13] [SPEAKER_01]: much later in the episode we have Carmi really getting down to thinking about how he feels about his break-up with Clare.
[00:06:22] [SPEAKER_01]: And there's a sequence where he goes back into the chill unit and we have nine-inch nails and REM overlaid on each other.
[00:06:32] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that was very good for the cognitive dissonance and the kind of internal unrest with Carmi.
[00:06:39] [SPEAKER_01]: I thought that was incredibly effective.
[00:06:42] [SPEAKER_01]: So there were some really, really cool stuff in this episode.
[00:06:47] [SPEAKER_01]: But mixed in with that cool stuff, there were moments where they were almost just kind of doing a soap.
[00:06:56] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:06:57] [SPEAKER_01]: Which was...
[00:06:58] [SPEAKER_01]: Isn't it a soap opera?
[00:07:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, not like a bucket of soap.
[00:07:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Just clarifying.
[00:07:05] [SPEAKER_01]: So it felt like a funny episode in some ways.
[00:07:09] [SPEAKER_01]: These really cannot heart how he's feeling bits and these very naturalistic bits where you were just checking in on people
[00:07:17] [SPEAKER_01]: and seeing how they were doing with their family dramas.
[00:07:19] [SPEAKER_02]: I thought it was a really interesting decision to just open with a completely different film.
[00:07:25] [SPEAKER_02]: That was so cool.
[00:07:26] [SPEAKER_02]: It was cool, but it did take me a good two minutes to be like,
[00:07:28] [SPEAKER_02]: are we watching a really weird advert, the bear or have we put the wrong thing on?
[00:07:32] [SPEAKER_01]: Lucy and I literally did ask each other, are we still watching adverts right now?
[00:07:36] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. What's happening with this?
[00:07:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Do you want to go first? Is that one of your points?
[00:07:43] [SPEAKER_02]: The use of deceptive practice, the mysteries and mentors of Ricky J?
[00:07:50] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, since you've teed it up.
[00:07:53] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think we do want to give that a minute because maybe if you watch this in a very casual way
[00:08:00] [SPEAKER_01]: or you're not conscious of having to record a podcast,
[00:08:04] [SPEAKER_01]: then you might not have had the opportunity to dig into it a little bit.
[00:08:09] [SPEAKER_01]: But of course Lucy and I did.
[00:08:12] [SPEAKER_01]: And as Lucy says, that clip that you were seeing is from a film called Deceptive Practice,
[00:08:20] [SPEAKER_01]: The Mysteries and Mentors of Ricky J 2012.
[00:08:23] [SPEAKER_01]: And Ricky J was a stage magician.
[00:08:29] [SPEAKER_01]: He was a big deal.
[00:08:32] [SPEAKER_01]: He was called by the New Yorker, perhaps the most gifted sleight of hand artist alive.
[00:08:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Legitimant?
[00:08:41] [SPEAKER_01]: There we go.
[00:08:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Right on the nose there.
[00:08:44] [SPEAKER_01]: Had a decent number of TV credits and was a very, very successful magician.
[00:08:53] [SPEAKER_01]: I tried to say musician there.
[00:08:55] [SPEAKER_01]: Mugition.
[00:08:56] [SPEAKER_01]: No one has been a successful musician yet.
[00:09:01] [SPEAKER_01]: There's a career choice for us there.
[00:09:02] [SPEAKER_01]: Sadly passed away in 2018.
[00:09:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Now, I suppose that does take us to...
[00:09:10] [SPEAKER_01]: We've got our bit of trivia there about okay this is where the piece of film came from.
[00:09:18] [SPEAKER_02]: But within it are so many other films and other things.
[00:09:21] [SPEAKER_01]: You've got some trivia already.
[00:09:22] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't have a lot of trivia actually about this.
[00:09:24] [SPEAKER_02]: The only trivia I have from IMDB is that that's what the documentary was.
[00:09:29] [SPEAKER_02]: I recognised some of the clips.
[00:09:31] [SPEAKER_02]: There was one in particular of an eyeball being cut,
[00:09:35] [SPEAKER_02]: which I do not enjoy as everyone knows I don't like eye things.
[00:09:38] [SPEAKER_02]: However it's from a film called Un Cien Ande Lu,
[00:09:42] [SPEAKER_02]: which is by Louis Boone, I'm going to say his name wrong, Boone Well,
[00:09:46] [SPEAKER_02]: and Salvador Dali.
[00:09:48] [SPEAKER_02]: It's a bit of a surrealist classic and I had a really
[00:09:52] [SPEAKER_02]: wanker ex-boyfriend who made me watch it one time.
[00:09:56] [SPEAKER_02]: It's fascinating and it's very, very much of the surrealist movement.
[00:10:03] [SPEAKER_02]: I had read that for that scene in particular
[00:10:07] [SPEAKER_02]: they found a man who was missing an eye and put a dead animal's eye in it
[00:10:13] [SPEAKER_02]: and that's how they were able to achieve the effect of cutting someone's eye in that way.
[00:10:17] [SPEAKER_02]: However looking at the Wikipedia page,
[00:10:20] [SPEAKER_02]: it seems that there was actually done differently
[00:10:23] [SPEAKER_02]: with a dead calf that was made to look like a human for that scene.
[00:10:29] [SPEAKER_02]: But I recognise that as it's quite an iconic surrealist thing.
[00:10:33] [SPEAKER_02]: I thought it was interesting that they included so much surrealism
[00:10:35] [SPEAKER_02]: because surrealism and magic I think are near each other on a Venn diagram,
[00:10:40] [SPEAKER_02]: but I don't know if they're the same thing.
[00:10:43] [SPEAKER_02]: But what stuck out to me from the intro as well
[00:10:46] [SPEAKER_02]: was the idea of you tell someone you're going to deceive them before you deceive them.
[00:10:51] [SPEAKER_02]: So the thing with magic and sleight of hand is that we know we're being tricked
[00:10:55] [SPEAKER_02]: and it's about figuring out how that's happening.
[00:10:58] [SPEAKER_01]: Now I'm going to flag to you at this point a seamless segue
[00:11:05] [SPEAKER_01]: and I'm flagging it to you because it would be so seamless that it would just pass you by otherwise.
[00:11:09] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay are you telling me you're going to the segue before you segue?
[00:11:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's like I've got the indicators going before I try my best.
[00:11:17] [SPEAKER_01]: So we're obviously set up with this idea of sleight of hand,
[00:11:22] [SPEAKER_01]: we're going to tell you we're going to do one thing and then we're going to do another thing.
[00:11:27] [SPEAKER_01]: I felt like this might have been one of the things that they set up in season 3 that didn't actually pay off.
[00:11:33] [SPEAKER_02]: What's that?
[00:11:34] [SPEAKER_01]: So we have Leisure Demand and Marcus has sent off to come up with a big dessert.
[00:11:42] [SPEAKER_02]: In my head we were in season 4, I think it's because we just finished watching Umbrella Cadmium League
[00:11:46] [SPEAKER_02]: but we're in season 4, we're not in season 3.
[00:11:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah I don't think it paid off either.
[00:11:49] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah and it felt a bit, there were times in this season where going through the season
[00:11:59] [SPEAKER_01]: I think we were being prompted to expect things to arrive that didn't pay off
[00:12:06] [SPEAKER_01]: and I think what it reminded me of at times was that trend that you saw with young adult normals
[00:12:14] [SPEAKER_01]: where they would split the finale and it really really felt like that.
[00:12:18] [SPEAKER_02]: A few reviews have said that as well, they're like this is like half of something.
[00:12:22] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah and that is really surprising isn't it?
[00:12:25] [SPEAKER_01]: And yeah I thought that was a neat way to come into it.
[00:12:29] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think the show was saying we're going to let you down in season 3 by not having stuff pay off
[00:12:36] [SPEAKER_01]: when they were talking about Leisure Demand but it did feel like that at times.
[00:12:42] [SPEAKER_01]: I really thought we were going to see Marcus's dessert.
[00:12:45] [SPEAKER_02]: I was quite crossed that there was a conversation in the next episode between Will Poulter
[00:12:51] [SPEAKER_02]: and I love Will Poulter, so much love for the character of Luca.
[00:12:54] [SPEAKER_01]: Isn't he unbelievably charming?
[00:12:57] [SPEAKER_02]: He's so charming, he and Sydney have to get it on.
[00:13:01] [SPEAKER_02]: It's got to happen they deserve it.
[00:13:02] [SPEAKER_02]: However he has this conversation with a chef whose name I really should have looked up
[00:13:06] [SPEAKER_02]: about desserts that he makes and the tricks and like you said the hot potato, cold potato situation.
[00:13:13] [SPEAKER_01]: Would you like to know his name?
[00:13:13] [SPEAKER_02]: I would love to know his name.
[00:13:15] [SPEAKER_01]: I can't tell you how to pronounce it but I will.
[00:13:17] [SPEAKER_02]: It's Leisure Demand.
[00:13:23] [SPEAKER_01]: It's Grant Achatz or Achatz A-C-H-A-T-Z.
[00:13:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Great cameo and I loved all the references to his food but I was like Marcus should be having this conversation with him,
[00:13:35] [SPEAKER_02]: not Luca for the sake of the storyline of the show.
[00:13:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Like Will Poulter played it so well and it was a really beautiful moment
[00:13:40] [SPEAKER_02]: he's like I said needle too much but I was like oh it would have been nice to have Marcus talk to someone
[00:13:46] [SPEAKER_02]: who creates that kind of magic and visual intrigue.
[00:13:51] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah I think that would have been nice for Marcus.
[00:13:54] [SPEAKER_01]: I think it would have taken, would it have sustained the realism of that scene?
[00:14:02] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not sure, I mean I've set a kidded around a bit on this podcast in the past about that idea
[00:14:09] [SPEAKER_01]: that everybody from work comes to important life events if you're a character in a TV show.
[00:14:13] [SPEAKER_01]: Would Marcus have been prominent enough to make the cut for the forever?
[00:14:19] [SPEAKER_01]: He went to the party.
[00:14:20] [SPEAKER_01]: He did go to the party.
[00:14:22] [SPEAKER_01]: You and I know what it is.
[00:14:23] [SPEAKER_02]: No your logic is true, I mean it's completely right like Luca's got food in the door there but I just was like
[00:14:30] [SPEAKER_02]: okay right so yes and no okay we're skipping forward to the next episode we're gonna come back to the one we're on.
[00:14:35] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes I know I take your point that Marcus being there would have been a bit incongruous
[00:14:39] [SPEAKER_02]: but however I would argue that Richie who worked there for four, now five days being like there at the very end
[00:14:47] [SPEAKER_02]: and working in the kitchen on the fire all night was also a little bit of a stretch.
[00:14:51] [SPEAKER_02]: I loved it, I loved it but it was a stretch.
[00:14:54] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah you don't always get the work experience boy back.
[00:14:57] [SPEAKER_02]: I was literally thinking like surely Richie's one in a queue of like jaded work experience people they've had
[00:15:03] [SPEAKER_02]: and they're like oh another one great.
[00:15:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah but all the rest are 15.
[00:15:07] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah all the rest are 15.
[00:15:10] [SPEAKER_02]: I take your point I do think there is something about it there.
[00:15:13] [SPEAKER_01]: You know but my point is a little pedantic because yeah you know that conversation could have happened at the party instead.
[00:15:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah well that guy didn't go to the party but yeah I can.
[00:15:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Talking about Marcus I feel he was underutilised this season.
[00:15:30] [SPEAKER_02]: He did a lot of pondering but not a lot of stuff was given to him and I think that was a waste.
[00:15:37] [SPEAKER_02]: So it's going to be a heck of a dessert in season four.
[00:15:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah and I wonderful something I'd really like to do this episode is maybe when we get to then just talk about what we think is coming or what we'd like to see.
[00:15:53] [SPEAKER_01]: So maybe we come back to that because I think so.
[00:15:56] [SPEAKER_01]: I think we would riot if we didn't see Marcus as a dessert at this stage.
[00:16:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Do you have anything else about the magical opening?
[00:16:09] [SPEAKER_01]: No no I'm pretty happy with that it comes along.
[00:16:14] [SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of fun.
[00:16:17] [SPEAKER_01]: I think it kept me on my toes a little bit because I didn't see it coming.
[00:16:21] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if the ledger demand subplot paid off in season three but maybe it will in season four.
[00:16:36] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah I'm going to take us to FACTS.
[00:16:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Well yeah and I think this is something we have a responsibility to come down somewhere on the FACC line.
[00:16:51] [SPEAKER_02]: The FACC line.
[00:16:52] [SPEAKER_01]: Somewhere out.
[00:16:53] [SPEAKER_01]: The FACCS of life.
[00:16:55] [SPEAKER_01]: Yes we need to take a stand on this one.
[00:16:58] [SPEAKER_02]: I've been tepid on the FACCS in a few episodes however I actually really like them in this episode.
[00:17:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Go on.
[00:17:07] [SPEAKER_02]: I liked that individually Claire and Karmie treat the FACCS in kind of the same way which is they're not cruel to them.
[00:17:16] [SPEAKER_02]: They're exasperated by them but they're very kind to them.
[00:17:19] [SPEAKER_02]: You know Claire is clearly very fond of both of them as is Karmie and I maintain that FACC probably is Karmie's best friend.
[00:17:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Like I know it's played for a joke in the show but it does seem like they actually have been friends for a really long time
[00:17:32] [SPEAKER_02]: and that there's a gentleness there between the two of them so we open with the boxes which is a running gag that I've been enjoying this season
[00:17:39] [SPEAKER_02]: and I didn't shout out last week to Iowa DeBerry's physical comedy of smashing those boxes and then kind of falling into them in the dumpster
[00:17:48] [SPEAKER_02]: so we see Karmie and the FACCS cramming these boxes disagreeing about whether or not the FACCS actually do it.
[00:17:56] [SPEAKER_02]: They're talking about if this is a haunt and they talk about a clear haunt and the fact that Claire might be haunting Karmie
[00:18:01] [SPEAKER_02]: and I think it's true. I think things and people that we are upset with or playing on our minds do haunt us
[00:18:08] [SPEAKER_02]: in maybe not the literal John Cena way but they do and Karmie says that Claire couldn't haunt because she's peace
[00:18:16] [SPEAKER_02]: and Ted FACCS says a piece of ass which for some reason just really tickled me
[00:18:21] [SPEAKER_02]: but he talks about the fact that she's calm, he admits that he thinks about her every day
[00:18:27] [SPEAKER_02]: and that maybe she is haunting him and I think Richie is haunting him too.
[00:18:31] [SPEAKER_02]: There's still a lot of scenes of Richie and Karmie looking mournful in the same room
[00:18:36] [SPEAKER_02]: a brilliant shot in this episode of them on either side of the divide between the restaurant and the kitchen
[00:18:42] [SPEAKER_02]: but we then see the FACCS going to the hospital which you and I both assumed they were going to go and see Nat and her baby
[00:18:48] [SPEAKER_02]: but it turns out they're actually going to go and see Claire to try and apologise for Karmie
[00:18:53] [SPEAKER_02]: and Claire is just lovely with them, she's so nice to them despite the fact that what they're doing is massively over the line
[00:19:02] [SPEAKER_02]: and ludicrous and overblown but it's a funny scene and the two of them going there talking about the time that Ted got his short arm fixed
[00:19:10] [SPEAKER_02]: the fact they're going with peace and what religion are we really sent me
[00:19:14] [SPEAKER_02]: the idea that they're not even quite clear on what the family religion is
[00:19:19] [SPEAKER_02]: the scene with Claire is wonderful, she's asking if they're okay
[00:19:22] [SPEAKER_02]: I fucking love you both but you have to leave
[00:19:24] [SPEAKER_02]: the idea that Ted's accidentally ended up in an operating room
[00:19:28] [SPEAKER_02]: he's like oh they were cutting someone open and she's like were you in there?
[00:19:31] [SPEAKER_02]: and he's like yeah I think it might have been
[00:19:34] [SPEAKER_02]: I thought Matty Matheson's delivery of the little bits of information about Karmie were just adorable
[00:19:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Karmie was on his class trip in elementary school
[00:19:44] [SPEAKER_02]: he was excited for the canoe but the canoes didn't come and he was upset
[00:19:49] [SPEAKER_02]: and nobody takes care of Karmie, you know Donna
[00:19:53] [SPEAKER_02]: maybe you could take care of him and he could take care of you
[00:19:56] [SPEAKER_02]: it was just lovely, just the way she says you mean so much to me
[00:20:00] [SPEAKER_02]: your multiple texts mean so much to me
[00:20:02] [SPEAKER_02]: and then at the end reminding Ted to stop fucking about with your friends and to get it checked
[00:20:07] [SPEAKER_02]: you know what I'm talking about, it was just a great way to finish that off
[00:20:10] [SPEAKER_01]: I think this was a funny episode in more than one sense of that word
[00:20:16] [SPEAKER_01]: one of the things I noted down when I was looking back at it
[00:20:18] [SPEAKER_01]: was there are times when this is genuinely funny
[00:20:23] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah this episode and to a greater degree
[00:20:28] [SPEAKER_01]: it sits in very strong contrast with some of those scenes that are deadly serious
[00:20:33] [SPEAKER_01]: and intense and almost scary like that shot you were talking about
[00:20:36] [SPEAKER_01]: where we have Richie and Karmie sitting on either side of a wall
[00:20:42] [SPEAKER_01]: but in contrast you know where the episode ends
[00:20:44] [SPEAKER_01]: it ends with as you say that scene where the facts go to see Claire
[00:20:48] [SPEAKER_01]: which I think is one of their better scenes
[00:20:49] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah it really is
[00:20:50] [SPEAKER_01]: I think it's touching and it's funny
[00:20:53] [SPEAKER_01]: and it doesn't feel repetitive
[00:20:54] [SPEAKER_01]: it doesn't feel like they're just working an old saw again
[00:20:57] [SPEAKER_02]: it's to do with the plot as well it's not just hear some fact
[00:21:00] [SPEAKER_02]: it's something's trying to happen
[00:21:02] [SPEAKER_01]: and it's not the only genuinely funny scene in that episode
[00:21:06] [SPEAKER_01]: because what you'll remember is that it then transitions more or less seamlessly
[00:21:12] [SPEAKER_01]: into Sid's trip to go and see Pete to throw up off the food
[00:21:16] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm a Pete, she's talking about noise right?
[00:21:20] [SPEAKER_02]: I had not thought that the smell would wake them up
[00:21:22] [SPEAKER_02]: so I was really confused
[00:21:24] [SPEAKER_02]: I was like but why would it be noisy is it wrapped in foil
[00:21:26] [SPEAKER_02]: so like justice for Pete, I too was confused
[00:21:29] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah and those are just cute funny scenes
[00:21:33] [SPEAKER_02]: just like Tiff and Richie
[00:21:35] [SPEAKER_02]: that was cute funny as well I felt when they were yelling at their kid
[00:21:39] [SPEAKER_02]: not to eat stuff off the ground
[00:21:41] [SPEAKER_02]: there was a nice kind of energy there
[00:21:44] [SPEAKER_02]: and this is what I mean is that
[00:21:46] [SPEAKER_01]: the show's kind of dotting between these very very naturalistic
[00:21:51] [SPEAKER_01]: slice of life sort of bantry kind of scenes
[00:21:56] [SPEAKER_01]: and these quite abstract intensities
[00:22:00] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm betting Trent Reznor was only involved in one half of those
[00:22:07] [SPEAKER_01]: similarly when Uncle Jimmy and Carmi
[00:22:10] [SPEAKER_02]: oh that's a great scene
[00:22:12] [SPEAKER_01]: it is great, it's funny, it feels natural
[00:22:15] [SPEAKER_01]: when Jimmy asks Carmi is he just spraying shit
[00:22:19] [SPEAKER_01]: or no I think Carmi says I'm just spraying shit
[00:22:22] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah
[00:22:23] [SPEAKER_01]: I was like that's neat
[00:22:25] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah I like that line
[00:22:26] [SPEAKER_02]: I spent a lot of time thinking
[00:22:29] [SPEAKER_02]: is Carmi just spraying shit?
[00:22:31] [SPEAKER_02]: how do you think I got so fucking erudite?
[00:22:33] [SPEAKER_02]: that's another classic line
[00:22:35] [SPEAKER_02]: so it's
[00:22:37] [SPEAKER_01]: I think when you ask me how I felt about this episode
[00:22:41] [SPEAKER_01]: I think it's frustrating because it feels like
[00:22:45] [SPEAKER_01]: two different really nice quite cool episodes
[00:22:49] [SPEAKER_01]: that I would like
[00:22:53] [SPEAKER_01]: but tonally it's a little tricky
[00:22:56] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah
[00:22:58] [SPEAKER_02]: do you want to talk about that scene with Jimmy and Carmi?
[00:23:02] [SPEAKER_02]: is that one of your points?
[00:23:03] [SPEAKER_01]: it's not one of my points
[00:23:05] [SPEAKER_02]: okay it's one of mine
[00:23:06] [SPEAKER_01]: that's lucky
[00:23:07] [SPEAKER_02]: we've kind of covered it
[00:23:08] [SPEAKER_02]: I just thought the energy between the two actors
[00:23:10] [SPEAKER_02]: was really good
[00:23:10] [SPEAKER_02]: they're both preoccupied by their review for different reasons
[00:23:14] [SPEAKER_02]: one thing I didn't
[00:23:17] [SPEAKER_02]: love was that earlier in the season
[00:23:19] [SPEAKER_02]: we had this nice scene with Jimmy and Sid where he says
[00:23:22] [SPEAKER_02]: he feels guilty and wishes he's done more for the Berzato kids
[00:23:25] [SPEAKER_02]: and he kind of rehashes that here
[00:23:26] [SPEAKER_02]: and I'm sometimes like if we've
[00:23:28] [SPEAKER_02]: it's nice that he's saying it to Carmi but I'm like
[00:23:30] [SPEAKER_02]: we also kind of know this fact
[00:23:31] [SPEAKER_02]: but he's specific about it being about Donna and Mikey
[00:23:35] [SPEAKER_02]: and Carmi sort of says he feels that he, Carmi, could have tried more as well
[00:23:42] [SPEAKER_02]: you get the sense in this episode that he's trying to tell Carmi something
[00:23:45] [SPEAKER_02]: and he doesn't quite get all the way there
[00:23:47] [SPEAKER_02]: so what we learned from his time with the computer
[00:23:50] [SPEAKER_02]: is
[00:23:52] [SPEAKER_02]: he's more fucked than we realize
[00:23:54] [SPEAKER_02]: he can't cover his shorts because of a rip in the market
[00:23:57] [SPEAKER_02]: this is my economic knowledge showing out here
[00:24:00] [SPEAKER_02]: so he essentially needs to pool his money back from the business
[00:24:04] [SPEAKER_02]: the computer remains hilarious
[00:24:06] [SPEAKER_02]: you know I think it might be better for you to experience
[00:24:08] [SPEAKER_02]: what it's like to be poor and foster some empathy
[00:24:12] [SPEAKER_02]: but just the kind of uncle, father, son
[00:24:16] [SPEAKER_02]: nephew, dynamic
[00:24:17] [SPEAKER_02]: and this Jimmy going to his lecture series about
[00:24:20] [SPEAKER_02]: the things that have come out of Chicago
[00:24:22] [SPEAKER_02]: we learned a bit about Jimmy's stress dreams
[00:24:24] [SPEAKER_02]: about being in a pool with all his teeth falling out
[00:24:27] [SPEAKER_02]: and he starts talking about carbon dating
[00:24:28] [SPEAKER_02]: which was invented by someone from Chicago
[00:24:30] [SPEAKER_02]: so it's this kind of rambling
[00:24:33] [SPEAKER_02]: when you don't want to tell someone something
[00:24:35] [SPEAKER_02]: and you're kind of talking around the houses
[00:24:37] [SPEAKER_02]: but it's just really well done
[00:24:39] [SPEAKER_02]: and this I just made me laugh
[00:24:40] [SPEAKER_02]: because of course he would drop his golf clubs off at the bear
[00:24:43] [SPEAKER_02]: rather than leave them in the car out here
[00:24:46] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah just two really stand out performances
[00:24:48] [SPEAKER_02]: I enjoyed it a lot
[00:24:49] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah and I think we got a lot of that
[00:24:52] [SPEAKER_01]: in this episode
[00:24:53] [SPEAKER_01]: one of the points that I want to
[00:24:56] [SPEAKER_01]: come around to actually relates to that
[00:24:58] [SPEAKER_01]: but I just wanted to touch on another
[00:25:01] [SPEAKER_01]: another nice scene like that
[00:25:02] [SPEAKER_01]: we get some really nice interactions
[00:25:04] [SPEAKER_01]: between Tina and Marcus
[00:25:07] [SPEAKER_01]: again while Marcus is working on this dessert
[00:25:09] [SPEAKER_01]: that feels like we're never going to see
[00:25:12] [SPEAKER_02]: it feels like I'm so bitter about the dessert
[00:25:15] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah but he's also helping Tina
[00:25:19] [SPEAKER_01]: with her cooking, talking about smoking horseradish
[00:25:22] [SPEAKER_01]: and there's so much warmth
[00:25:24] [SPEAKER_01]: between the two of that
[00:25:26] [SPEAKER_01]: and it really feels in a really
[00:25:30] [SPEAKER_01]: straightforward way
[00:25:31] [SPEAKER_01]: like the two of them are flourishing
[00:25:34] [SPEAKER_01]: I'd say especially Marcus
[00:25:36] [SPEAKER_01]: but about 90% at the time
[00:25:38] [SPEAKER_01]: and Tina as well
[00:25:38] [SPEAKER_01]: I know she has a bit of struggle in this season
[00:25:40] [SPEAKER_01]: but for the most part things are going really really well for Tina
[00:25:43] [SPEAKER_01]: the problem is Karmie
[00:25:45] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah and that was my point
[00:25:47] [SPEAKER_01]: my point in the form of a question
[00:25:51] [SPEAKER_01]: is what would happen without Karmie?
[00:25:54] [SPEAKER_02]: everyone would have a nice time
[00:25:56] [SPEAKER_01]: no I don't know that's not fair
[00:25:57] [SPEAKER_01]: that's not fair
[00:25:58] [SPEAKER_01]: I was reading an article
[00:26:01] [SPEAKER_01]: this was an article by Mara Eakin
[00:26:06] [SPEAKER_01]: it's in Vulture
[00:26:07] [SPEAKER_01]: and we can pop that into the notes
[00:26:09] [SPEAKER_01]: and she makes a really convincing argument
[00:26:13] [SPEAKER_01]: that in terms of season 3
[00:26:15] [SPEAKER_01]: if Karmie took the month off
[00:26:18] [SPEAKER_01]: everything would be fine
[00:26:19] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah
[00:26:20] [SPEAKER_01]: and I think essentially she's right about that
[00:26:22] [SPEAKER_01]: she's convincing because of course she's correct
[00:26:25] [SPEAKER_01]: and we see that at the end of the season
[00:26:27] [SPEAKER_01]: two Karmie gets locked in the fridge
[00:26:29] [SPEAKER_01]: and honestly things seem to go okay
[00:26:31] [SPEAKER_01]: and I think in that sense
[00:26:35] [SPEAKER_01]: in that sense Karmie
[00:26:36] [SPEAKER_01]: does seem to be most of the problem
[00:26:38] [SPEAKER_01]: at the bear
[00:26:41] [SPEAKER_01]: but I do want to put a counterpoint out there
[00:26:43] [SPEAKER_01]: and see where you come down on this
[00:26:46] [SPEAKER_01]: which is
[00:26:48] [SPEAKER_01]: we then have that scene between Tina and Marcus
[00:26:51] [SPEAKER_01]: who are doing great
[00:26:53] [SPEAKER_01]: and yeah
[00:26:54] [SPEAKER_01]: since having a terrible time with it
[00:26:56] [SPEAKER_01]: but Tina and Marcus are in that great place
[00:27:00] [SPEAKER_01]: because of Karmie's impetus
[00:27:03] [SPEAKER_02]: yes
[00:27:06] [SPEAKER_02]: I'd say Sid has a part to play in that as well though
[00:27:08] [SPEAKER_01]: well she does doesn't she
[00:27:10] [SPEAKER_01]: because but for Sid
[00:27:14] [SPEAKER_01]: the original beef would never have got organised
[00:27:17] [SPEAKER_01]: and I suspect would have gone bust
[00:27:18] [SPEAKER_01]: before they'd had time to find the money
[00:27:20] [SPEAKER_01]: to be honest
[00:27:21] [SPEAKER_01]: so yeah I think you're right
[00:27:24] [SPEAKER_01]: but I think
[00:27:25] [SPEAKER_01]: I go back and forth on
[00:27:28] [SPEAKER_01]: to what extent Karmie is a helpful thing
[00:27:32] [SPEAKER_01]: and to what extent Karmie is the problem
[00:27:35] [SPEAKER_01]: and it's tricky because you do
[00:27:38] [SPEAKER_01]: then have these nice moments from you go
[00:27:39] [SPEAKER_02]: no it's not all bad
[00:27:41] [SPEAKER_02]: no it's not
[00:27:42] [SPEAKER_02]: he just can't be in it
[00:27:44] [SPEAKER_02]: which is excruciating to watch
[00:27:46] [SPEAKER_02]: and becomes more of an issue I think
[00:27:48] [SPEAKER_02]: in the next episode as well
[00:27:49] [SPEAKER_02]: but he's just incapable of
[00:27:52] [SPEAKER_02]: seeing what's there in front of him
[00:27:55] [SPEAKER_02]: a point
[00:27:58] [SPEAKER_02]: I think it's your turn
[00:27:59] [SPEAKER_02]: I just did mine
[00:28:00] [SPEAKER_02]: you did yours
[00:28:01] [SPEAKER_02]: look at that
[00:28:03] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm like well I think it'll probably be okay
[00:28:05] [SPEAKER_02]: um
[00:28:07] [SPEAKER_02]: I liked the scene between Richie and Tiff
[00:28:11] [SPEAKER_02]: I think that Gillian Jacobs is really lovely
[00:28:14] [SPEAKER_02]: in that role
[00:28:15] [SPEAKER_02]: however I'm gonna say it
[00:28:17] [SPEAKER_02]: I think it's unreasonable to ask your ex
[00:28:20] [SPEAKER_02]: to come to your wedding
[00:28:21] [SPEAKER_02]: it is
[00:28:22] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm with Richie on this
[00:28:24] [SPEAKER_02]: I think that's really strange
[00:28:25] [SPEAKER_02]: I know they have a kid together but I'm
[00:28:28] [SPEAKER_02]: I think that's strange
[00:28:30] [SPEAKER_02]: I think it's weirder for the kid
[00:28:31] [SPEAKER_02]: to see her dad upset at a wedding
[00:28:33] [SPEAKER_02]: than it is to not have him there
[00:28:36] [SPEAKER_01]: to the extent that I can devil's advocate this one
[00:28:39] [SPEAKER_02]: oh god
[00:28:40] [SPEAKER_02]: yep
[00:28:42] [SPEAKER_01]: I agree with you that pressing your ex to come to
[00:28:45] [SPEAKER_01]: come to a wedding in that particular context
[00:28:49] [SPEAKER_01]: probably not very sensitive
[00:28:51] [SPEAKER_01]: I would say
[00:28:53] [SPEAKER_01]: pressing your ex to RSVP one way or another
[00:28:57] [SPEAKER_02]: understandable
[00:28:57] [SPEAKER_02]: pretty understandable
[00:28:58] [SPEAKER_02]: you gotta understand how many plates of chicken
[00:29:00] [SPEAKER_02]: you're serving on
[00:29:01] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah
[00:29:03] [SPEAKER_01]: but
[00:29:04] [SPEAKER_01]: you know I'm
[00:29:06] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm dancing around the point there
[00:29:08] [SPEAKER_01]: because she's not she's not saying RSVP one way or another
[00:29:11] [SPEAKER_02]: she's saying don't be a bitch come
[00:29:12] [SPEAKER_02]: which is like
[00:29:14] [SPEAKER_02]: she's very very clear about that
[00:29:15] [SPEAKER_01]: and yeah I agree with you that is
[00:29:18] [SPEAKER_01]: because she must she must know that Richie's not over
[00:29:20] [SPEAKER_02]: no I mean they haven't been separated that long
[00:29:23] [SPEAKER_02]: we know they were together when their child was born
[00:29:26] [SPEAKER_02]: yep
[00:29:27] [SPEAKER_02]: and the kid is five or six
[00:29:31] [SPEAKER_02]: maybe
[00:29:31] [SPEAKER_02]: if I mean it's not it's not that long of a time
[00:29:34] [SPEAKER_02]: that you'd think things would be absolutely chill
[00:29:36] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah he was still wearing his wedding ring the other week
[00:29:38] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah
[00:29:39] [SPEAKER_02]: and then it was off and then it was on again
[00:29:41] [SPEAKER_02]: I read an interview with Gillian Jacobs
[00:29:45] [SPEAKER_02]: who is the partner of Christopher Storer
[00:29:47] [SPEAKER_02]: so I think it's really cool that she's in this at all
[00:29:51] [SPEAKER_02]: it's by
[00:29:52] [SPEAKER_02]: Sasia Rankin it's called the Bear Star Gillian Jacobs
[00:29:55] [SPEAKER_02]: on Tiffany's past lives moment now I've not seen past lives yet
[00:29:58] [SPEAKER_02]: but I know that the concept is about the road not taken
[00:30:02] [SPEAKER_02]: and they talk about the scene on the bench
[00:30:04] [SPEAKER_02]: between the two of them as being this moment of like
[00:30:07] [SPEAKER_02]: it could have worked out maybe
[00:30:09] [SPEAKER_02]: but Gillian Jacobs had some really interesting stuff to say about Tiff
[00:30:13] [SPEAKER_02]: she said
[00:30:14] [SPEAKER_02]: and it comes across in this episode because she said
[00:30:17] [SPEAKER_02]: you know you're the only family I've got
[00:30:19] [SPEAKER_02]: that when she was doing fishes
[00:30:20] [SPEAKER_02]: the kind of motivation she felt for Tiff's character
[00:30:24] [SPEAKER_02]: was that she desperately wanted to be a part of this family
[00:30:27] [SPEAKER_02]: and be a part of the chaos
[00:30:28] [SPEAKER_02]: and that really warmed me to her because
[00:30:30] [SPEAKER_02]: I think that's something
[00:30:33] [SPEAKER_02]: we've just come back for a wedding with a lot of
[00:30:35] [SPEAKER_02]: the chosen family that we've ended up with over the years
[00:30:39] [SPEAKER_02]: and I understand very much that feeling of being
[00:30:41] [SPEAKER_02]: sucked into the orbit of
[00:30:43] [SPEAKER_02]: a family that you might not necessarily have grown up in
[00:30:46] [SPEAKER_02]: but you become a part of
[00:30:47] [SPEAKER_02]: and it makes sense of things like inviting Donna to the wedding
[00:30:51] [SPEAKER_02]: and things like that that she wants to keep the connection to that
[00:30:53] [SPEAKER_02]: wider family and be a part of each other's lives
[00:30:57] [SPEAKER_02]: does it make sense to invite Donna?
[00:30:59] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I bet she's a scurreem at a wedding
[00:31:04] [SPEAKER_01]: it'll be a massive win or a massive disaster
[00:31:07] [SPEAKER_02]: do you think we'll see the wedding?
[00:31:11] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you can never say for sure
[00:31:17] [SPEAKER_01]: it doesn't feel central to the plot right now
[00:31:23] [SPEAKER_02]: but you know, cause I really want to...
[00:31:25] [SPEAKER_02]: it's no Marcus's mum's funeral
[00:31:29] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean we've established that Richie's invited
[00:31:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Donna's invited
[00:31:36] [SPEAKER_02]: maybe, maybe
[00:31:37] [SPEAKER_02]: sugar's still in touch with her I think
[00:31:39] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, I wouldn't be surprised if we have a ten
[00:31:42] [SPEAKER_02]: episode season again
[00:31:43] [SPEAKER_02]: I wouldn't be surprised if one of them is the wedding
[00:31:47] [SPEAKER_02]: however, I think Richie's going to be okay
[00:31:49] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah well you, we have a theory about where that's going
[00:31:53] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah I think so
[00:31:55] [SPEAKER_02]: but yeah, that was one of my points was
[00:31:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Richie and Tiff on the bench
[00:31:59] [SPEAKER_02]: nice
[00:31:59] [SPEAKER_02]: how about you?
[00:32:01] [SPEAKER_01]: I've got, I've got in my point
[00:32:03] [SPEAKER_01]: one little micro thing that I did quite like
[00:32:07] [SPEAKER_01]: was at the end of the episode
[00:32:10] [SPEAKER_01]: Karmie is, is putting on his suit
[00:32:14] [SPEAKER_01]: and when he puts you on the suit to go out
[00:32:16] [SPEAKER_01]: he finds, I guess it's like a prayer card
[00:32:19] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah it seems to be both a prayer card
[00:32:21] [SPEAKER_02]: and an order of service when it was Marcus's mum's funeral
[00:32:24] [SPEAKER_02]: but yeah
[00:32:24] [SPEAKER_01]: and I like that you found that in his suit pocket
[00:32:27] [SPEAKER_01]: cause that happens all the time if you have a suit
[00:32:28] [SPEAKER_01]: that you only ever wear for occasions like this
[00:32:31] [SPEAKER_01]: you will reach into the bucket
[00:32:32] [SPEAKER_01]: oh there's the order of service from that
[00:32:34] [SPEAKER_01]: you know, that wedding or that funeral
[00:32:36] [SPEAKER_02]: that's one of the best jokes and parts in recreation
[00:32:39] [SPEAKER_02]: what's that?
[00:32:39] [SPEAKER_02]: when April is trying on one of Leslie's suits
[00:32:41] [SPEAKER_02]: and she pulls out
[00:32:42] [SPEAKER_02]: is it a condom and a Fleetwood Mac crumpled up ticket
[00:32:44] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah
[00:32:45] [SPEAKER_02]: and they're like
[00:32:46] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't want to wear Leslie's old Fleetwood Mac sex pants
[00:32:51] [SPEAKER_02]: cause they're a wi-fi name for a very long time
[00:32:53] [SPEAKER_02]: it was
[00:32:56] [SPEAKER_02]: but yeah you found a couple of gems in your pocket
[00:32:59] [SPEAKER_02]: not literal gems but like the odd fiver
[00:33:02] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah that's a good day
[00:33:03] [SPEAKER_02]: that's a good day isn't it
[00:33:04] [SPEAKER_02]: they have also gone through the washing machine
[00:33:06] [SPEAKER_02]: oh yeah
[00:33:07] [SPEAKER_02]: plastic money in the UK now though
[00:33:09] [SPEAKER_02]: it doesn't really matter if it goes through the washing machine
[00:33:11] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah yeah, check fiver through the washing machine
[00:33:13] [SPEAKER_01]: it'll be just fine
[00:33:13] [SPEAKER_02]: it'll be just fine, it doesn't even crumble
[00:33:15] [SPEAKER_02]: there you go
[00:33:16] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean don't do it
[00:33:17] [SPEAKER_02]: don't wash your money
[00:33:18] [SPEAKER_02]: that's really weird
[00:33:19] [SPEAKER_02]: but if you happen to do it
[00:33:20] [SPEAKER_02]: it's fine
[00:33:21] [SPEAKER_01]: and listeners you can
[00:33:23] [SPEAKER_01]: you can estimate Lucy and I's age
[00:33:25] [SPEAKER_01]: from the fact that neither of us
[00:33:27] [SPEAKER_01]: made a money laundering joke
[00:33:28] [SPEAKER_01]: but we both thought about it
[00:33:30] [SPEAKER_02]: I actually didn't until you said it
[00:33:33] [SPEAKER_01]: that's those few years I've got on you there
[00:33:35] [SPEAKER_01]: oh absolutely
[00:33:35] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm just looking through my notes
[00:33:39] [SPEAKER_02]: we had a big stress montage
[00:33:41] [SPEAKER_02]: after Sydney practising her leaving speech
[00:33:43] [SPEAKER_02]: in front of a cut out of Paul Rudd
[00:33:45] [SPEAKER_02]: wearing a beef t-shirt
[00:33:46] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah nice to see Paul Rudd
[00:33:48] [SPEAKER_02]: nice to see Paul Rudd
[00:33:50] [SPEAKER_02]: I thought
[00:33:51] [SPEAKER_02]: the stress montage was very stressful
[00:33:54] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean that's just the evergreen point
[00:33:57] [SPEAKER_02]: of the bear
[00:33:58] [SPEAKER_02]: the stress montage was very stressful
[00:34:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Gary and Richie are feeling the burn
[00:34:04] [SPEAKER_02]: we see a scene between the two of them
[00:34:05] [SPEAKER_02]: where they're both just looking a bit exhausted
[00:34:08] [SPEAKER_02]: Sid and Karmie have this scene
[00:34:09] [SPEAKER_02]: where she wants to talk about her
[00:34:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Shapiro opportunity
[00:34:12] [SPEAKER_02]: but she can't quite do it
[00:34:14] [SPEAKER_02]: she talks about not being able to keep up with him
[00:34:16] [SPEAKER_02]: and he kind of glibly says
[00:34:18] [SPEAKER_02]: you know I've been doing it longer
[00:34:19] [SPEAKER_02]: and she's like it's not about skill
[00:34:21] [SPEAKER_02]: and then they get into this
[00:34:23] [SPEAKER_02]: awkward situation where he invites her to
[00:34:26] [SPEAKER_02]: the Ever Funeral
[00:34:28] [SPEAKER_02]: and says that he doesn't want it to be
[00:34:30] [SPEAKER_02]: so hard to keep up with her
[00:34:31] [SPEAKER_02]: and he's like
[00:34:32] [SPEAKER_02]: the way I feel about Karmie and Sid
[00:34:34] [SPEAKER_02]: at this point is he's like the
[00:34:36] [SPEAKER_02]: partner you really want to leave
[00:34:38] [SPEAKER_02]: but they keep stringing you along with like
[00:34:40] [SPEAKER_02]: I'll change
[00:34:41] [SPEAKER_02]: I will take the bin out
[00:34:42] [SPEAKER_02]: no I will do that
[00:34:43] [SPEAKER_02]: I will visit your mom
[00:34:44] [SPEAKER_02]: like something like that
[00:34:45] [SPEAKER_02]: and then
[00:34:46] [SPEAKER_02]: he's gonna keep stringing her along
[00:34:48] [SPEAKER_02]: without realizing it
[00:34:50] [SPEAKER_01]: they're not gonna visit your mom
[00:34:51] [SPEAKER_01]: no
[00:34:52] [SPEAKER_02]: Sid and we see Sid in her apartment
[00:34:54] [SPEAKER_02]: reading very Karmie centric reviews
[00:34:57] [SPEAKER_02]: a review I read did point out
[00:34:59] [SPEAKER_02]: that like we have seen none of this like professional shots
[00:35:02] [SPEAKER_02]: of Karmie in the kitchen
[00:35:03] [SPEAKER_02]: or profiles being written or anything like that
[00:35:06] [SPEAKER_02]: so who knows where they're getting this information from
[00:35:08] [SPEAKER_01]: well I think the show's always doing this thing
[00:35:10] [SPEAKER_01]: you're just never quite sure
[00:35:12] [SPEAKER_01]: if any of the reviews are real
[00:35:13] [SPEAKER_02]: I feel very gaslit by print media
[00:35:15] [SPEAKER_02]: in this show
[00:35:16] [SPEAKER_02]: very gaslit by it
[00:35:18] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't really know what's real
[00:35:19] [SPEAKER_02]: and that becomes more of an issue
[00:35:21] [SPEAKER_02]: in the second episode we're gonna talk about
[00:35:23] [SPEAKER_02]: but it's clear
[00:35:25] [SPEAKER_02]: that
[00:35:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Sid is being sidelined
[00:35:27] [SPEAKER_02]: the focus is on Karmie
[00:35:29] [SPEAKER_02]: she's not getting to shine under her own star
[00:35:31] [SPEAKER_02]: and she's avoiding calls from her dad
[00:35:34] [SPEAKER_02]: we also got a shot of
[00:35:36] [SPEAKER_02]: Marcus's inspo board
[00:35:37] [SPEAKER_02]: his mood board you spotted Ricky J
[00:35:39] [SPEAKER_01]: I did
[00:35:40] [SPEAKER_01]: yep he
[00:35:41] [SPEAKER_01]: you can spot him very very briefly
[00:35:44] [SPEAKER_01]: in that scene
[00:35:44] [SPEAKER_02]: it was very cute
[00:35:46] [SPEAKER_02]: that so many people came into work on their day off
[00:35:50] [SPEAKER_02]: other small things
[00:35:51] [SPEAKER_02]: there was a beautiful shot of Sid
[00:35:53] [SPEAKER_02]: looking at Lake Michigan
[00:35:55] [SPEAKER_02]: just the blues were incredible
[00:35:57] [SPEAKER_02]: on her way out to see
[00:35:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Sugar and Pete
[00:36:01] [SPEAKER_02]: and we see that
[00:36:02] [SPEAKER_02]: juxtaposed with some happy Karmie memories
[00:36:05] [SPEAKER_02]: and this is anxiety about the upcoming review
[00:36:07] [SPEAKER_02]: Sugar sends a picture of her baby
[00:36:09] [SPEAKER_02]: to Donna
[00:36:10] [SPEAKER_02]: which is nice
[00:36:11] [SPEAKER_02]: it shows that things are kind of thawing there
[00:36:13] [SPEAKER_02]: and the needle drops in this episode
[00:36:16] [SPEAKER_02]: were
[00:36:17] [SPEAKER_02]: superb
[00:36:17] [SPEAKER_02]: I thought they were absolutely excellent
[00:36:19] [SPEAKER_02]: highlights for me included
[00:36:21] [SPEAKER_02]: a bit of strange currencies
[00:36:23] [SPEAKER_02]: always a good tune
[00:36:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Secret Love by Stevie Nicks
[00:36:26] [SPEAKER_02]: played when Richie and Tiff were talking in the playground
[00:36:31] [SPEAKER_02]: as Karmie's going through his old chef books
[00:36:33] [SPEAKER_02]: for inspiration and we see Sid in the taxi
[00:36:35] [SPEAKER_02]: it's a song called Blowing Kisses
[00:36:37] [SPEAKER_02]: by Jennifer Castle
[00:36:39] [SPEAKER_02]: and I think my favourite was at the end
[00:36:42] [SPEAKER_02]: absolutely iconic Counting Crows song
[00:36:44] [SPEAKER_02]: A Murder of One
[00:36:46] [SPEAKER_02]: which actually includes the
[00:36:48] [SPEAKER_02]: line about you stood there in the meadow
[00:36:50] [SPEAKER_02]: Counting Crows
[00:36:51] [SPEAKER_02]: which is how the band got their name
[00:36:52] [SPEAKER_02]: so I loved that
[00:36:54] [SPEAKER_02]: I thought it was brilliant
[00:36:55] [SPEAKER_02]: and of course interspersed with that
[00:36:57] [SPEAKER_02]: the kind of Trent Reznor
[00:36:58] [SPEAKER_02]: and Atticus Ross musical cues
[00:37:00] [SPEAKER_02]: that we become familiar with through the season
[00:37:05] [SPEAKER_02]: anything else?
[00:37:07] [SPEAKER_01]: No, no I think I'm just where I want to be
[00:37:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Great
[00:37:10] [SPEAKER_01]: do you want to take the lead on the next one?
[00:37:13] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah
[00:37:13] [SPEAKER_01]: well
[00:37:16] [SPEAKER_01]: let's set the scene a little bit here
[00:37:18] [SPEAKER_01]: so we've entered the
[00:37:21] [SPEAKER_01]: the limits of cameo city
[00:37:23] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh my gosh
[00:37:24] [SPEAKER_02]: so many cameos that they had to do a run down
[00:37:28] [SPEAKER_02]: of the cameos before the episode had even started
[00:37:30] [SPEAKER_02]: I know
[00:37:31] [SPEAKER_02]: who's who of cameos
[00:37:34] [SPEAKER_01]: and we have cameos both in the sense of
[00:37:37] [SPEAKER_01]: we have a bunch of guest stars coming back
[00:37:41] [SPEAKER_01]: you know some real highlights
[00:37:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Joel McHale, Olivia Coleman
[00:37:44] [SPEAKER_01]: Will Poulter all being great
[00:37:46] [SPEAKER_01]: we were speaking about Will Poulter earlier
[00:37:48] [SPEAKER_02]: I loved Olivia Coleman in this episode
[00:37:50] [SPEAKER_02]: she was really funny wasn't she?
[00:37:52] [SPEAKER_02]: She was much fun
[00:37:54] [SPEAKER_02]: and Joel McHale was an asshole
[00:37:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes
[00:37:58] [SPEAKER_01]: so I'd like to talk about that a bit
[00:38:01] [SPEAKER_01]: in an oblique kind of way
[00:38:03] [SPEAKER_01]: because this was my first point
[00:38:08] [SPEAKER_01]: so
[00:38:09] [SPEAKER_01]: this episode opens
[00:38:12] [SPEAKER_01]: with a scene with Thomas Keller
[00:38:16] [SPEAKER_02]: Thomas Keller
[00:38:17] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Thomas Keller
[00:38:19] [SPEAKER_01]: talking about how to
[00:38:21] [SPEAKER_01]: trust a chicken
[00:38:22] [SPEAKER_01]: and how nice is Thomas Keller?
[00:38:24] [SPEAKER_01]: Well Thomas Keller seems delightful
[00:38:25] [SPEAKER_01]: and thank you for setting that up a little bit
[00:38:27] [SPEAKER_01]: because
[00:38:30] [SPEAKER_01]: Joel McHale
[00:38:31] [SPEAKER_01]: when interviewed on Late Night with Seth Meyers
[00:38:35] [SPEAKER_01]: said his character is inspired by Thomas Keller
[00:38:38] [SPEAKER_02]: but like evil Keller
[00:38:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Evil Keller, yes
[00:38:42] [SPEAKER_01]: but this is
[00:38:44] [SPEAKER_01]: it's not quite
[00:38:45] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean it's definitely evil Keller
[00:38:48] [SPEAKER_01]: because he seems lovely
[00:38:49] [SPEAKER_01]: he seems so nice
[00:38:50] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh my god I want him to come and talk to me
[00:38:52] [SPEAKER_02]: about how we nurture people in our lives
[00:38:54] [SPEAKER_02]: and try to do a little better than we did the day before
[00:38:57] [SPEAKER_02]: and just everything
[00:38:58] [SPEAKER_02]: I love him
[00:38:59] [SPEAKER_02]: I love him
[00:38:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Thomas Keller if you're listening
[00:39:02] [SPEAKER_02]: call us
[00:39:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Look us up
[00:39:06] [SPEAKER_01]: Apparently according to Joel McHale in this interview
[00:39:10] [SPEAKER_01]: Thomas Keller is known for whispering at his employees
[00:39:14] [SPEAKER_01]: and he's known for having stressful kitchen environments
[00:39:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Is this... oh no
[00:39:22] [SPEAKER_01]: have we just bought into Keller propaganda?
[00:39:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, no
[00:39:26] [SPEAKER_01]: but here the plot goes even deeper
[00:39:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh no
[00:39:31] [SPEAKER_01]: In 2012
[00:39:33] [SPEAKER_01]: Christopher Store directed a documentary about Thomas Keller
[00:39:37] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh
[00:39:38] [SPEAKER_01]: Do you know what that documentary was called?
[00:39:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Too fast to Keller
[00:39:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Your guess is so much better than you think
[00:39:46] [SPEAKER_02]: What is it?
[00:39:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Sense of urgency
[00:39:49] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh no way fuck off
[00:39:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Nos
[00:39:52] [SPEAKER_02]: Nos
[00:39:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Right Nos
[00:40:03] [SPEAKER_01]: So here's what's kind of cool about all of this
[00:40:07] [SPEAKER_01]: is
[00:40:09] [SPEAKER_01]: I think
[00:40:10] [SPEAKER_01]: and I can't prove this
[00:40:12] [SPEAKER_01]: but we've kind of got the whole genesis
[00:40:15] [SPEAKER_01]: of the bear here
[00:40:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Christopher Store is directing a documentary
[00:40:19] [SPEAKER_01]: about Thomas Keller
[00:40:20] [SPEAKER_01]: about 10 years ago
[00:40:20] [SPEAKER_01]: all about this chef
[00:40:22] [SPEAKER_01]: who becomes the model for
[00:40:24] [SPEAKER_01]: a really, really important character in the bear
[00:40:26] [SPEAKER_01]: who's famous for
[00:40:28] [SPEAKER_01]: or associated with
[00:40:30] [SPEAKER_01]: some of the kitchen environments
[00:40:32] [SPEAKER_01]: and some of the dynamics
[00:40:33] [SPEAKER_01]: that the bear is all about
[00:40:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Interesting
[00:40:34] [SPEAKER_02]: and alongside this
[00:40:36] [SPEAKER_02]: he's got his lived experience of being friends
[00:40:38] [SPEAKER_02]: with Chris Zaccaro
[00:40:40] [SPEAKER_02]: and that whole she kind of
[00:40:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Wow
[00:40:42] [SPEAKER_01]: So that's got all
[00:40:45] [SPEAKER_01]: one could argue
[00:40:46] [SPEAKER_01]: that that all ties together
[00:40:49] [SPEAKER_01]: Interesting
[00:40:50] [SPEAKER_01]: You know although they're quite low-key
[00:40:54] [SPEAKER_01]: about it
[00:40:55] [SPEAKER_01]: when they do that
[00:40:55] [SPEAKER_01]: what is just a really cute
[00:40:58] [SPEAKER_01]: pleasant scene
[00:40:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh it's lovely
[00:41:00] [SPEAKER_01]: at the start of the episode
[00:41:01] [SPEAKER_01]: which was really enjoyable
[00:41:02] [SPEAKER_01]: I think that was a big part of the reason we thought
[00:41:03] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah that's the thing
[00:41:04] [SPEAKER_01]: we want to do for our cooking segment
[00:41:07] [SPEAKER_01]: It's actually a bit more than that
[00:41:08] [SPEAKER_01]: and when you start seeing it through this filter
[00:41:12] [SPEAKER_01]: you think
[00:41:13] [SPEAKER_01]: Thomas Keller's kind of conspicuous in his absence
[00:41:16] [SPEAKER_01]: at the
[00:41:17] [SPEAKER_01]: at the forever dinner
[00:41:19] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah
[00:41:21] [SPEAKER_01]: but he's so important
[00:41:23] [SPEAKER_01]: when you're thinking about the bear
[00:41:24] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah
[00:41:25] [SPEAKER_01]: and he's an extremely important chef
[00:41:28] [SPEAKER_01]: He's a really big deal
[00:41:29] [SPEAKER_02]: He is French Laundry right?
[00:41:32] [SPEAKER_01]: He's French Laundry
[00:41:33] [SPEAKER_01]: which is a restaurant we hear about all the time
[00:41:35] [SPEAKER_02]: Wow
[00:41:36] [SPEAKER_02]: in the bear
[00:41:38] [SPEAKER_02]: We have to go there man
[00:41:39] [SPEAKER_02]: We have to go to Napa
[00:41:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah
[00:41:41] [SPEAKER_01]: So I think
[00:41:42] [SPEAKER_01]: a great deal
[00:41:44] [SPEAKER_01]: of what this is about
[00:41:45] [SPEAKER_01]: is about this man
[00:41:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Interesting
[00:41:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh I love that
[00:41:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah I love that
[00:41:49] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah this is really cool
[00:41:50] [SPEAKER_02]: I have to apologise as well
[00:41:53] [SPEAKER_02]: because when we spoke
[00:41:54] [SPEAKER_02]: during our cooking segment
[00:41:56] [SPEAKER_02]: that's upcoming
[00:41:57] [SPEAKER_02]: I
[00:41:59] [SPEAKER_02]: ragged on
[00:42:00] [SPEAKER_02]: Thomas Keller
[00:42:01] [SPEAKER_02]: about getting
[00:42:02] [SPEAKER_02]: his James's muddled up
[00:42:04] [SPEAKER_02]: in the story of the Pope's nose
[00:42:06] [SPEAKER_02]: To be fair
[00:42:07] [SPEAKER_02]: I think a lot of people think it's actually James the second
[00:42:09] [SPEAKER_02]: not the third
[00:42:10] [SPEAKER_02]: but the reason I got muddled up
[00:42:12] [SPEAKER_02]: for international listeners
[00:42:14] [SPEAKER_02]: is you know what I'm about to say
[00:42:16] [SPEAKER_02]: I know what you're about to say
[00:42:17] [SPEAKER_02]: What am I about to say
[00:42:17] [SPEAKER_01]: You are about to talk about
[00:42:20] [SPEAKER_01]: the different numberings of James's
[00:42:22] [SPEAKER_01]: Yes
[00:42:23] [SPEAKER_01]: Yes you are
[00:42:24] [SPEAKER_01]: Straffin lists
[00:42:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Straffin
[00:42:27] [SPEAKER_02]: It's going to be quite boring
[00:42:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Most of you probably know this
[00:42:30] [SPEAKER_02]: but up until
[00:42:33] [SPEAKER_02]: 1606
[00:42:34] [SPEAKER_02]: I believe
[00:42:35] [SPEAKER_02]: England and Scotland were separate kingdoms
[00:42:37] [SPEAKER_02]: but they were joined by
[00:42:39] [SPEAKER_02]: the accession of
[00:42:41] [SPEAKER_02]: who we in Scotland knew
[00:42:43] [SPEAKER_02]: as James the sixth
[00:42:44] [SPEAKER_02]: to the throne of both England and Scotland
[00:42:47] [SPEAKER_02]: So James the sixth
[00:42:48] [SPEAKER_02]: becomes known as James the sixth and first
[00:42:50] [SPEAKER_02]: or first and sixth
[00:42:51] [SPEAKER_02]: depending on what side of the board you're on
[00:42:52] [SPEAKER_02]: and then we start renumbering James's
[00:42:55] [SPEAKER_02]: so James the second and third
[00:42:57] [SPEAKER_02]: as referred to in relation to the Pope's nose
[00:42:59] [SPEAKER_02]: are in the 17th and 18th centuries
[00:43:01] [SPEAKER_02]: whereas in Scotland
[00:43:02] [SPEAKER_02]: are James the second and third
[00:43:04] [SPEAKER_02]: are in the 14th and 15th
[00:43:07] [SPEAKER_02]: no the 15th and 16th centuries
[00:43:09] [SPEAKER_02]: there's a heck of a lot of James's
[00:43:11] [SPEAKER_02]: we don't like naming people different things
[00:43:13] [SPEAKER_02]: in history I've discovered
[00:43:14] [SPEAKER_02]: so when he was talking about James the second and third
[00:43:17] [SPEAKER_02]: I was like that's completely wrong
[00:43:18] [SPEAKER_02]: that's way too early but
[00:43:20] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm sorry Thomas Keller you were correct
[00:43:22] [SPEAKER_02]: but technically in Scotland
[00:43:23] [SPEAKER_02]: that would have been James the seventh and eighth
[00:43:27] [SPEAKER_02]: So
[00:43:28] [SPEAKER_01]: Guess we know which side
[00:43:31] [SPEAKER_01]: Thomas Keller butters
[00:43:32] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah guess we know he's never coming to Scotland
[00:43:35] [SPEAKER_01]: Sounds like he's a real Joel McHale
[00:43:37] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah
[00:43:38] [SPEAKER_02]: But it did make me laugh that I was really picky about that
[00:43:41] [SPEAKER_02]: and then I went and looked it up and I was like oh actually
[00:43:43] [SPEAKER_02]: that is accurate sorry Thomas Keller
[00:43:46] [SPEAKER_02]: I think I have a
[00:43:48] [SPEAKER_02]: theory as well that cooking a roast chicken
[00:43:50] [SPEAKER_02]: is one of the most
[00:43:52] [SPEAKER_02]: with apologies to our vegan and vegetarian listeners
[00:43:55] [SPEAKER_02]: I think cooking a roast chicken is one of the most fundamental
[00:43:59] [SPEAKER_02]: simple enjoyable things
[00:44:00] [SPEAKER_02]: you can do
[00:44:02] [SPEAKER_02]: in terms of cooking and providing food for people
[00:44:04] [SPEAKER_02]: that you love and care about
[00:44:06] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah I think it's
[00:44:08] [SPEAKER_01]: we've been thinking about this a bit
[00:44:10] [SPEAKER_01]: in advance of cooking
[00:44:11] [SPEAKER_01]: for some friends of ours
[00:44:14] [SPEAKER_01]: for a certain number of people
[00:44:17] [SPEAKER_01]: it's a really really good quantity of food
[00:44:19] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh that's great
[00:44:20] [SPEAKER_01]: I personally
[00:44:22] [SPEAKER_01]: I think the sweet spot is four
[00:44:24] [SPEAKER_01]: I think it feeds four really really well
[00:44:27] [SPEAKER_02]: It's a good thing we only have two friends
[00:44:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Are there are cats?
[00:44:30] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah
[00:44:31] [SPEAKER_01]: I think you can feed more than four
[00:44:33] [SPEAKER_01]: you can feed five
[00:44:35] [SPEAKER_01]: I think when you're starting to get towards six
[00:44:38] [SPEAKER_01]: it's feeling a bit stretched
[00:44:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah it's lovely
[00:44:41] [SPEAKER_02]: It's something about the action of it
[00:44:42] [SPEAKER_02]: it's so simple like roasting a chicken
[00:44:45] [SPEAKER_02]: and sitting down enjoying that at a table
[00:44:47] [SPEAKER_02]: there's something about it that I think is just
[00:44:50] [SPEAKER_02]: very heartwarming
[00:44:50] [SPEAKER_02]: and all the different things you can do with it
[00:44:52] [SPEAKER_02]: traditional roasts
[00:44:53] [SPEAKER_02]: doing something a bit differently
[00:44:54] [SPEAKER_02]: like the anchovy butter chicken
[00:44:56] [SPEAKER_02]: that tomato chicken you make is fantastic as well
[00:44:59] [SPEAKER_02]: it's just lovely
[00:45:00] [SPEAKER_01]: The majesty of
[00:45:03] [SPEAKER_01]: your classic
[00:45:05] [SPEAKER_01]: leftover chicken and potato
[00:45:07] [SPEAKER_01]: dauphinois sandwich
[00:45:09] [SPEAKER_01]: They're so good
[00:45:11] [SPEAKER_01]: maybe a bit of cheese in there
[00:45:13] [SPEAKER_01]: Wonderful
[00:45:15] [SPEAKER_02]: The inherited majesty
[00:45:17] [SPEAKER_02]: of you managing to
[00:45:19] [SPEAKER_02]: pick a chicken carcass clean
[00:45:21] [SPEAKER_02]: you don't quite do it as well as your mum
[00:45:23] [SPEAKER_02]: No one does
[00:45:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Your mum is like
[00:45:26] [SPEAKER_02]: and I say this with actually a lot of love and affection
[00:45:28] [SPEAKER_02]: it's like watching a plague of locusts
[00:45:31] [SPEAKER_02]: she is able to strip a carcass
[00:45:33] [SPEAKER_02]: to its very
[00:45:34] [SPEAKER_02]: essence
[00:45:36] [SPEAKER_02]: and I'm literally the child who takes one bit out of the chicken breast
[00:45:39] [SPEAKER_02]: and is like
[00:45:40] [SPEAKER_02]: it's done, I don't like to fix it
[00:45:42] [SPEAKER_02]: so I always love watching
[00:45:45] [SPEAKER_02]: your mum do that because I find it absolutely fascinating
[00:45:47] [SPEAKER_01]: The two of you could really enjoy a chicken
[00:45:49] [SPEAKER_01]: in your individual ways
[00:45:50] [SPEAKER_02]: It's great, do you remember in Amelie
[00:45:52] [SPEAKER_02]: there's one of the characters, one of his likes
[00:45:54] [SPEAKER_02]: is getting the oysters out of a chicken
[00:45:56] [SPEAKER_02]: and just eating it from rotisserie
[00:45:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, so good
[00:45:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Anyway, I've got on a chicken tangent, I must be hungry
[00:46:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Good intro then
[00:46:03] [SPEAKER_02]: with Thomas Kettler
[00:46:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and way more
[00:46:08] [SPEAKER_01]: interesting than
[00:46:09] [SPEAKER_01]: it first appears to be
[00:46:13] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to use it to kind of go into my
[00:46:14] [SPEAKER_02]: in a way
[00:46:16] [SPEAKER_02]: overarching thesis for the season
[00:46:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Which is what we're saying
[00:46:20] [SPEAKER_02]: with Karmie is a living
[00:46:22] [SPEAKER_02]: embodiment of the fact that
[00:46:24] [SPEAKER_02]: as humans we are wired
[00:46:26] [SPEAKER_02]: to hang on to the negative
[00:46:28] [SPEAKER_02]: much more than the positive
[00:46:30] [SPEAKER_02]: We see Karmie have this
[00:46:32] [SPEAKER_02]: wonderful interaction with Thomas Kettler
[00:46:34] [SPEAKER_02]: here about cooking as nurturing
[00:46:36] [SPEAKER_02]: legacy in the restaurant
[00:46:37] [SPEAKER_02]: this gentle philosophy of trying to do a little
[00:46:40] [SPEAKER_02]: better than the day before
[00:46:41] [SPEAKER_02]: We see this lovely scene with him
[00:46:44] [SPEAKER_02]: and Chef Terry who refers
[00:46:46] [SPEAKER_02]: to him as old friend
[00:46:47] [SPEAKER_02]: talking about the reasons why she's made
[00:46:50] [SPEAKER_02]: her decision to
[00:46:53] [SPEAKER_02]: finish
[00:46:54] [SPEAKER_02]: at ever, you know she wanted to go to
[00:46:56] [SPEAKER_02]: London more to sleep and more go to the party
[00:46:58] [SPEAKER_02]: She says I got to do all the things
[00:47:00] [SPEAKER_02]: I wanted to do the way I wanted to do them
[00:47:02] [SPEAKER_02]: with the people I wanted to do them
[00:47:04] [SPEAKER_02]: with and Karmie's got
[00:47:06] [SPEAKER_02]: all of that out there in front of him with the one
[00:47:08] [SPEAKER_02]: very tragic thing that he can't ever do
[00:47:10] [SPEAKER_02]: that with Mikey and that's something that
[00:47:12] [SPEAKER_02]: the bear will always be driving towards is that
[00:47:14] [SPEAKER_02]: it's addressing this gap of him not having been
[00:47:16] [SPEAKER_02]: able to do that with his brother
[00:47:18] [SPEAKER_02]: and you can see that pains him because that's
[00:47:20] [SPEAKER_02]: something he sees in his kind of self-hating
[00:47:22] [SPEAKER_02]: flashbacks and
[00:47:24] [SPEAKER_02]: memories
[00:47:26] [SPEAKER_02]: but the fundamental
[00:47:27] [SPEAKER_02]: problem with Karmie
[00:47:29] [SPEAKER_02]: is that he cannot see the good that's in front
[00:47:32] [SPEAKER_02]: of him and he has a self-destruct button
[00:47:33] [SPEAKER_02]: whether it's clear, whether it's the restaurant
[00:47:36] [SPEAKER_02]: whether it's the way he treats people
[00:47:38] [SPEAKER_02]: he is tuned to believe that the worst possible
[00:47:40] [SPEAKER_02]: thing is always going to happen
[00:47:41] [SPEAKER_02]: and as someone with chronic anxiety
[00:47:44] [SPEAKER_02]: I actually extend a lot of sympathy
[00:47:46] [SPEAKER_02]: towards him in this but it is so frustrating
[00:47:48] [SPEAKER_02]: to watch from the outside
[00:47:50] [SPEAKER_02]: to see someone just
[00:47:53] [SPEAKER_02]: implode
[00:47:54] [SPEAKER_02]: like this, like for me the epitome of it
[00:47:56] [SPEAKER_02]: really is sitting at that table with these amazing
[00:47:59] [SPEAKER_02]: chefs
[00:48:00] [SPEAKER_02]: who in this episode are framed as kind of former
[00:48:02] [SPEAKER_02]: coworkers or people that he knows
[00:48:04] [SPEAKER_02]: sharing these this love
[00:48:06] [SPEAKER_02]: and these anecdotes
[00:48:08] [SPEAKER_02]: and this camaraderie and this idea of
[00:48:10] [SPEAKER_02]: what it takes to make it
[00:48:12] [SPEAKER_02]: in this business and why they all love it and all he can do
[00:48:14] [SPEAKER_02]: is glare at Joel McHale
[00:48:15] [SPEAKER_02]: all he can do is focus on that
[00:48:17] [SPEAKER_02]: and it must be really hard to be confronted
[00:48:19] [SPEAKER_02]: with this person who's dominated your subconscious
[00:48:21] [SPEAKER_02]: for the last time in many years
[00:48:23] [SPEAKER_02]: but it's so sad because you see Sid
[00:48:26] [SPEAKER_02]: and Luca get so much out of those conversations
[00:48:28] [SPEAKER_02]: and Karmie just doesn't engage with it at all
[00:48:31] [SPEAKER_01]: I think it's interesting to come at it
[00:48:33] [SPEAKER_01]: I think
[00:48:35] [SPEAKER_01]: the show appears to be offering
[00:48:37] [SPEAKER_01]: as different conclusions
[00:48:40] [SPEAKER_01]: over the course of this episode
[00:48:41] [SPEAKER_01]: so
[00:48:42] [SPEAKER_01]: in a
[00:48:43] [SPEAKER_01]: in a
[00:48:45] [SPEAKER_01]: in a carry branch
[00:48:47] [SPEAKER_01]: or kind of way the question is
[00:48:49] [SPEAKER_01]: can Karmie have it all
[00:48:51] [SPEAKER_01]: and I think
[00:48:53] [SPEAKER_01]: the show has competing narratives
[00:48:55] [SPEAKER_01]: for us
[00:48:56] [SPEAKER_01]: and the first one's really easy
[00:48:58] [SPEAKER_01]: and really probably quite obvious
[00:49:01] [SPEAKER_01]: Chef Joel McHale
[00:49:02] [SPEAKER_01]: says no
[00:49:04] [SPEAKER_01]: no, no you can
[00:49:06] [SPEAKER_01]: you can be a pretty good chef
[00:49:08] [SPEAKER_01]: but you can't be an excellent chef
[00:49:10] [SPEAKER_01]: without
[00:49:12] [SPEAKER_01]: all this sacrifice
[00:49:13] [SPEAKER_01]: and that's something that you and I have spoken about
[00:49:16] [SPEAKER_01]: on our podcast
[00:49:17] [SPEAKER_01]: is that what the bear wants to say to us
[00:49:20] [SPEAKER_01]: is you've got to sacrifice stuff
[00:49:22] [SPEAKER_01]: but I don't
[00:49:24] [SPEAKER_01]: think it's the only narrative
[00:49:26] [SPEAKER_01]: that the show is putting forward to us
[00:49:28] [SPEAKER_01]: because we do
[00:49:31] [SPEAKER_01]: we do see other people
[00:49:32] [SPEAKER_01]: we see
[00:49:34] [SPEAKER_01]: the real chefs and I really do want to come back to them
[00:49:36] [SPEAKER_01]: because there's much more to say about them
[00:49:38] [SPEAKER_01]: but we see the real chefs
[00:49:40] [SPEAKER_01]: not presenting that version
[00:49:41] [SPEAKER_01]: and over and above that
[00:49:44] [SPEAKER_01]: we have
[00:49:46] [SPEAKER_01]: we have Chef Terry
[00:49:47] [SPEAKER_01]: who I don't think puts that forward
[00:49:50] [SPEAKER_01]: no
[00:49:51] [SPEAKER_01]: she's not as brittle as that
[00:49:53] [SPEAKER_01]: she's quite hard at times
[00:49:56] [SPEAKER_01]: with Karmie
[00:49:58] [SPEAKER_01]: but
[00:49:59] [SPEAKER_01]: not in a self-destructive way
[00:50:01] [SPEAKER_01]: and I say multiple narratives because there are two of them that they're dead easy
[00:50:04] [SPEAKER_01]: you do and you don't
[00:50:06] [SPEAKER_01]: but arguably
[00:50:07] [SPEAKER_01]: there's a third one there
[00:50:09] [SPEAKER_01]: which is that Chef Terry just gives it up
[00:50:11] [SPEAKER_01]: to be happy
[00:50:13] [SPEAKER_01]: so
[00:50:15] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know where the show comes down
[00:50:17] [SPEAKER_01]: on that maybe it doesn't
[00:50:18] [SPEAKER_02]: maybe the show ends with Karmie giving up the bear
[00:50:21] [SPEAKER_02]: well
[00:50:22] [SPEAKER_02]: should we skip ahead a little bit
[00:50:24] [SPEAKER_01]: because I'm really attracted
[00:50:28] [SPEAKER_01]: to
[00:50:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Jeremy Allen White
[00:50:31] [SPEAKER_01]: aren't we all
[00:50:32] [SPEAKER_01]: the way that man wears a t-shirt
[00:50:34] [SPEAKER_02]: the tiny mussely man
[00:50:35] [SPEAKER_02]: he's tiny
[00:50:38] [SPEAKER_01]: but you know that would be good
[00:50:40] [SPEAKER_01]: for long distance flights
[00:50:41] [SPEAKER_01]: and things like that
[00:50:42] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah you could fit him anywhere
[00:50:44] [SPEAKER_02]: pocket white
[00:50:47] [SPEAKER_01]: but
[00:50:47] [SPEAKER_01]: I completely lost my train of thought there
[00:50:52] [SPEAKER_01]: a really big swing here
[00:50:55] [SPEAKER_01]: could season 4
[00:50:58] [SPEAKER_01]: be about
[00:51:00] [SPEAKER_01]: losing the restaurant
[00:51:01] [SPEAKER_01]: or even just it closing
[00:51:04] [SPEAKER_01]: because we've
[00:51:05] [SPEAKER_01]: had this
[00:51:06] [SPEAKER_01]: on the one hand we've had this model put forward to us by Chef Terry
[00:51:10] [SPEAKER_01]: about walking away
[00:51:11] [SPEAKER_01]: we've also got the
[00:51:13] [SPEAKER_01]: loud and clear the setup
[00:51:15] [SPEAKER_01]: finances are good
[00:51:16] [SPEAKER_01]: you're about to run out of money
[00:51:19] [SPEAKER_01]: I believe
[00:51:20] [SPEAKER_01]: it's expected to be a 4 season show
[00:51:23] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah and they filmed the 4th season
[00:51:25] [SPEAKER_01]: so it's gonna have an ending
[00:51:27] [SPEAKER_01]: and I think
[00:51:29] [SPEAKER_01]: having done
[00:51:31] [SPEAKER_01]: getting the restaurant
[00:51:32] [SPEAKER_01]: they've done having the restaurant
[00:51:35] [SPEAKER_01]: could it be about losing the restaurant
[00:51:38] [SPEAKER_02]: and how it's improved them all along the way
[00:51:39] [SPEAKER_01]: well maybe
[00:51:40] [SPEAKER_02]: maybe not maybe the restaurant
[00:51:42] [SPEAKER_02]: was the friends we made along the way
[00:51:48] [SPEAKER_01]: if it ends with that title card
[00:51:49] [SPEAKER_01]: I you know
[00:51:51] [SPEAKER_02]: I can see it though
[00:51:52] [SPEAKER_02]: I wondered that as well
[00:51:54] [SPEAKER_02]: because I don't see them giving it to Sid
[00:51:56] [SPEAKER_02]: because ultimately the bear
[00:51:58] [SPEAKER_02]: the idea of the bear isn't Sid
[00:52:00] [SPEAKER_02]: like the bear is about Mikey
[00:52:02] [SPEAKER_02]: and it's about the family
[00:52:03] [SPEAKER_02]: and it's about Claire and it's about Karmie's
[00:52:06] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah and to the extent that I can credit
[00:52:08] [SPEAKER_01]: the Leisure Demand thing with
[00:52:10] [SPEAKER_01]: something
[00:52:12] [SPEAKER_01]: they did see
[00:52:15] [SPEAKER_01]: quite specifically
[00:52:16] [SPEAKER_01]: earlier on in the season
[00:52:18] [SPEAKER_01]: that this is about
[00:52:20] [SPEAKER_01]: as Karmie presents it this is about
[00:52:21] [SPEAKER_01]: what they pass on down generations of chefs
[00:52:24] [SPEAKER_01]: in new restaurants
[00:52:25] [SPEAKER_01]: so you know what else gets passed down generations
[00:52:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Neil Patron Boudness
[00:52:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Trauma
[00:52:33] [SPEAKER_02]: Funny you should say that because I thought Joel McHale's hair plugs weren't looking great
[00:52:36] [SPEAKER_02]: in this episode
[00:52:36] [SPEAKER_01]: You thought his hair line was too precise
[00:52:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah I think he's open about having had them
[00:52:41] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm not just conjecturing here
[00:52:42] [SPEAKER_02]: I think they look good from far away up close
[00:52:45] [SPEAKER_02]: they look a bit weird
[00:52:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Sorry Joel
[00:52:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Sorry Joel you're still great in this episode
[00:52:49] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh yeah you are
[00:52:50] [SPEAKER_01]: You really are really good actually
[00:52:52] [SPEAKER_01]: but yeah so I do wonder
[00:52:57] [SPEAKER_01]: if that's where it could go
[00:52:58] [SPEAKER_01]: now
[00:52:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Do you want to know what my argument against that is?
[00:53:02] [SPEAKER_01]: Yes
[00:53:03] [SPEAKER_01]: If we come back in season 4
[00:53:05] [SPEAKER_01]: and the bear has closed
[00:53:07] [SPEAKER_01]: and Marcus has not made that dessert
[00:53:09] [SPEAKER_02]: You can be raging
[00:53:10] [SPEAKER_02]: You're gonna be like fuck Sid
[00:53:12] [SPEAKER_02]: Where's the dessert?
[00:53:14] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm breathing a sigh of relief
[00:53:15] [SPEAKER_02]: because I honestly thought we were building up to
[00:53:17] [SPEAKER_02]: Karmie's gonna try and take his own life at the end of the season
[00:53:19] [SPEAKER_01]: You were worried about that
[00:53:20] [SPEAKER_02]: I was like okay I was saying this to you
[00:53:22] [SPEAKER_02]: I think we're building up to this
[00:53:23] [SPEAKER_02]: but he's surprisingly chill in that final scene
[00:53:26] [SPEAKER_02]: when he's walking home
[00:53:28] [SPEAKER_02]: until the review comes in it feels like
[00:53:30] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know there's a piece about him
[00:53:32] [SPEAKER_02]: more so than Sidney
[00:53:33] [SPEAKER_02]: Sidney's the one freaking out
[00:53:35] [SPEAKER_02]: he's passed on his dysfunction to Sidney
[00:53:39] [SPEAKER_01]: He has a really good interaction
[00:53:41] [SPEAKER_01]: with Jeff Derry
[00:53:42] [SPEAKER_02]: He does
[00:53:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Do we want to talk about his interaction with
[00:53:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Joel McHale?
[00:53:49] [SPEAKER_01]: I think you do and I'm interested in what you have to say
[00:53:52] [SPEAKER_02]: It's so
[00:53:53] [SPEAKER_02]: interesting this idea that you finally
[00:53:55] [SPEAKER_02]: meet the person
[00:53:58] [SPEAKER_02]: who has plagued
[00:53:59] [SPEAKER_02]: your mind like meeting your bully
[00:54:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Do you have anyone in your life
[00:54:04] [SPEAKER_02]: where you're like
[00:54:05] [SPEAKER_02]: if I met that person
[00:54:06] [SPEAKER_01]: We all have that
[00:54:09] [SPEAKER_01]: No
[00:54:10] [SPEAKER_01]: Not just that person
[00:54:13] [SPEAKER_01]: I think pretty sure
[00:54:15] [SPEAKER_01]: people who are really upset
[00:54:18] [SPEAKER_01]: at times in our lives
[00:54:19] [SPEAKER_01]: but even just
[00:54:20] [SPEAKER_01]: dumb interactions that you've had
[00:54:23] [SPEAKER_01]: I wish I'd said
[00:54:24] [SPEAKER_01]: they came back around the corner
[00:54:26] [SPEAKER_01]: and put a piece of mind to them
[00:54:28] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah and it's a big thing
[00:54:32] [SPEAKER_01]: for Karmie
[00:54:34] [SPEAKER_01]: and I think it's
[00:54:35] [SPEAKER_01]: true the show's credit
[00:54:36] [SPEAKER_01]: that
[00:54:38] [SPEAKER_01]: Karmie doesn't give a big
[00:54:40] [SPEAKER_01]: bombastic speech that wouldn't
[00:54:42] [SPEAKER_01]: really be believable
[00:54:44] [SPEAKER_01]: This felt quite real
[00:54:46] [SPEAKER_02]: There was a bit of a mad men illusion
[00:54:48] [SPEAKER_01]: No there was
[00:54:50] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think about you at all
[00:54:53] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah
[00:54:53] [SPEAKER_02]: He just says I don't think about you
[00:54:56] [SPEAKER_02]: but I'm like at all
[00:54:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Say at all
[00:54:59] [SPEAKER_02]: What I find interesting about when Karmie sees
[00:55:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Joel McHale is what it triggers in him
[00:55:04] [SPEAKER_02]: and it triggers these memories
[00:55:06] [SPEAKER_02]: of Mikey rejecting the idea
[00:55:08] [SPEAKER_02]: of the restaurant and bad reviews
[00:55:10] [SPEAKER_02]: It triggers these
[00:55:12] [SPEAKER_02]: moments of him being hard on his staff
[00:55:14] [SPEAKER_02]: It triggers these moments
[00:55:16] [SPEAKER_02]: of him thinking about
[00:55:18] [SPEAKER_02]: Claire and the fact that he doesn't
[00:55:20] [SPEAKER_02]: deserve love
[00:55:22] [SPEAKER_02]: And he gets some of this while they're having
[00:55:24] [SPEAKER_02]: these stories
[00:55:26] [SPEAKER_02]: about supportive bosses
[00:55:28] [SPEAKER_02]: who uplift their employees chocolate ganache
[00:55:31] [SPEAKER_02]: and they're talking about working for a bad boss
[00:55:33] [SPEAKER_02]: and the culture that you choose to create
[00:55:36] [SPEAKER_02]: What I thought was interesting
[00:55:37] [SPEAKER_02]: is one of the chefs
[00:55:39] [SPEAKER_02]: was it Genevieve Cope
[00:55:41] [SPEAKER_02]: what's the name of that
[00:55:44] [SPEAKER_02]: that chef
[00:55:44] [SPEAKER_02]: She says she feels she needs the fear
[00:55:46] [SPEAKER_02]: to get something done
[00:55:48] [SPEAKER_01]: Could it be Jeannie Kwan?
[00:55:50] [SPEAKER_02]: Jeannie Kwan, that's it
[00:55:52] [SPEAKER_02]: She talks about needing the fear to get something done
[00:55:55] [SPEAKER_02]: and I'm like I wonder if that's something that Karmie
[00:55:57] [SPEAKER_02]: would relate to
[00:55:58] [SPEAKER_02]: But while they're talking about this
[00:56:00] [SPEAKER_02]: he's just ruminating on this guy David Fields
[00:56:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Even when
[00:56:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Looker tries to
[00:56:05] [SPEAKER_02]: pull him into a conversation about the trauma dish
[00:56:08] [SPEAKER_02]: the 10 million peas that they shelled
[00:56:10] [SPEAKER_02]: which is very
[00:56:11] [SPEAKER_02]: on the nose talking about repurposing your trauma
[00:56:14] [SPEAKER_02]: He's staring at David Fields
[00:56:16] [SPEAKER_02]: and says he's one of the best chefs
[00:56:18] [SPEAKER_02]: in the world, Looker says he used to be
[00:56:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Karmie's like I don't think he sleeps
[00:56:22] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't think he loves
[00:56:24] [SPEAKER_02]: And then he goes off to confront
[00:56:26] [SPEAKER_02]: him and look at him and say
[00:56:27] [SPEAKER_02]: do you think this is going to end well?
[00:56:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely not
[00:56:30] [SPEAKER_02]: I had this theory that
[00:56:32] [SPEAKER_02]: they might play it like
[00:56:35] [SPEAKER_02]: have Joe McHale's character genuinely
[00:56:37] [SPEAKER_02]: not remember Karmie and then you suddenly realize
[00:56:39] [SPEAKER_02]: oh he's just like that with everyone
[00:56:41] [SPEAKER_02]: and that somehow makes it worse
[00:56:42] [SPEAKER_02]: but what they did instead
[00:56:45] [SPEAKER_02]: was have him deliberately
[00:56:46] [SPEAKER_02]: misremember Karmie's name
[00:56:49] [SPEAKER_02]: and be a dick
[00:56:50] [SPEAKER_02]: just be the person that you saw in the flashbacks
[00:56:53] [SPEAKER_02]: It's clear that those flashbacks are
[00:56:57] [SPEAKER_02]: pretty accurate
[00:56:58] [SPEAKER_02]: and then Karmie you know in this kind of
[00:57:01] [SPEAKER_02]: aggressive vulnerability
[00:57:03] [SPEAKER_02]: saying after fuck you I don't have much
[00:57:05] [SPEAKER_02]: I think about you too much
[00:57:06] [SPEAKER_02]: my life stopped
[00:57:09] [SPEAKER_02]: and Joe McHale it's clearly how he works
[00:57:11] [SPEAKER_02]: he's like I don't think about you
[00:57:12] [SPEAKER_02]: you left an excellent chef so you're welcome
[00:57:15] [SPEAKER_02]: talking about confidence, leadership ability
[00:57:17] [SPEAKER_02]: and then he walks off
[00:57:19] [SPEAKER_02]: and Karmie doesn't even cry
[00:57:21] [SPEAKER_02]: properly he kind of
[00:57:23] [SPEAKER_02]: has a couple of tears and a sort of
[00:57:25] [SPEAKER_02]: exasperated laugh and
[00:57:27] [SPEAKER_02]: and that's that
[00:57:29] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah, yeah
[00:57:30] [SPEAKER_01]: and I think it leaves
[00:57:33] [SPEAKER_01]: the whole thing quite ambiguous
[00:57:35] [SPEAKER_01]: which I think is a good place for season 3
[00:57:37] [SPEAKER_02]: and it's
[00:57:38] [SPEAKER_02]: the needle drop is Otis Redding's just one more day
[00:57:41] [SPEAKER_02]: live version
[00:57:43] [SPEAKER_01]: now you
[00:57:45] [SPEAKER_01]: you mentioned that
[00:57:46] [SPEAKER_01]: you had a worry
[00:57:48] [SPEAKER_01]: that this was going to end
[00:57:51] [SPEAKER_01]: with Karmie trying to take his own life
[00:57:52] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah
[00:57:53] [SPEAKER_01]: and I do have an interesting bit of trivia
[00:57:56] [SPEAKER_01]: for you there
[00:57:57] [SPEAKER_01]: because
[00:58:00] [SPEAKER_01]: what piece of music does this episode end with?
[00:58:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Laid by James
[00:58:05] [SPEAKER_02]: no disarm
[00:58:06] [SPEAKER_02]: by the Smashing Pumpkins
[00:58:07] [SPEAKER_01]: one of our favourite songs, one of my favourite Smashing Pumpkins songs
[00:58:11] [SPEAKER_01]: and Billy Corrigan
[00:58:13] [SPEAKER_01]: has said at times in interviews
[00:58:16] [SPEAKER_01]: that he wrote that
[00:58:17] [SPEAKER_01]: at a time when
[00:58:19] [SPEAKER_01]: he was thinking about killing himself
[00:58:21] [SPEAKER_01]: and he couldn't bring himself to do it
[00:58:23] [SPEAKER_01]: interesting
[00:58:24] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not saying that that's the
[00:58:27] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not saying the show is reaching by trying to send
[00:58:29] [SPEAKER_01]: as a secret signal there
[00:58:30] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah, it's such a good fit for this
[00:58:33] [SPEAKER_02]: the ending though
[00:58:34] [SPEAKER_02]: and the feeling and the
[00:58:35] [SPEAKER_02]: and it's also you know Chicago, Billy Corrigan
[00:58:38] [SPEAKER_02]: lives up in Highland Park
[00:58:39] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah, I've always loved that song
[00:58:42] [SPEAKER_02]: for the idea of the killer in me
[00:58:45] [SPEAKER_02]: is the killer in you
[00:58:46] [SPEAKER_02]: it's this recognising
[00:58:48] [SPEAKER_02]: pain or
[00:58:49] [SPEAKER_02]: affliction in someone else
[00:58:52] [SPEAKER_02]: and I feel that's something
[00:58:53] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know what made me think of Karmie and Mikey a little bit
[00:58:56] [SPEAKER_01]: well he says about that
[00:58:58] [SPEAKER_01]: Billy Corrigan says about that
[00:59:00] [SPEAKER_01]: that this is about him trying to
[00:59:04] [SPEAKER_01]: speak or express something to his parents
[00:59:06] [SPEAKER_01]: about his trauma as a child
[00:59:09] ohhhhhhh
[00:59:09] [SPEAKER_01]: and I think the show
[00:59:12] [SPEAKER_01]: is conscious of that
[00:59:13] [SPEAKER_02]: oh my god it's the Ur statement of the bear
[00:59:16] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah
[00:59:19] [SPEAKER_02]: we have to listen to Siamese Dream soon
[00:59:21] [SPEAKER_01]: ohhh such a good help
[00:59:25] [SPEAKER_01]: so lots of cool stuff in there
[00:59:27] [SPEAKER_01]: to learn about Siamese Dream
[00:59:29] [SPEAKER_02]: you've blindsided me with that one
[00:59:31] [SPEAKER_02]: was not expecting that
[00:59:33] [SPEAKER_02]: because I mean honestly
[00:59:35] [SPEAKER_02]: sometimes I look at the soundtrack to the show
[00:59:37] [SPEAKER_02]: and I'm just like are you serious
[00:59:39] [SPEAKER_02]: like this is because that song by James
[00:59:41] [SPEAKER_02]: is always on your playlists
[00:59:43] [SPEAKER_01]: shall we tell everyone
[00:59:45] [SPEAKER_01]: what we were discussing
[00:59:48] [SPEAKER_01]: about the fact that song was playing at the party
[00:59:50] [SPEAKER_02]: what was that
[00:59:51] [SPEAKER_02]: just like it was the only song that played
[00:59:53] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah the way that we
[00:59:55] [SPEAKER_01]: skipped through time in that party
[00:59:58] [SPEAKER_01]: I think
[00:59:59] [SPEAKER_01]: the most literal interpretation
[01:00:00] [SPEAKER_01]: is that for hours
[01:00:02] [SPEAKER_01]: they've been listening to nothing
[01:00:05] [SPEAKER_01]: but laid
[01:00:08] [SPEAKER_01]: and I think
[01:00:09] [SPEAKER_01]: that Sins Neighbours
[01:00:10] [SPEAKER_01]: must be the most patient people in the world
[01:00:14] [SPEAKER_01]: to have somehow endured
[01:00:16] [SPEAKER_01]: amid
[01:00:16] [SPEAKER_01]: I said two in the morning
[01:00:18] [SPEAKER_01]: two hour laid party
[01:00:20] [SPEAKER_02]: ba ba ba ba
[01:00:27] [SPEAKER_01]: what heroes
[01:00:28] [SPEAKER_02]: were James, I didn't realise James had even hit
[01:00:32] [SPEAKER_02]: the US
[01:00:33] [SPEAKER_03]: oh there we go, oh clearly they have
[01:00:35] [SPEAKER_02]: I thought of them as like a
[01:00:36] [SPEAKER_02]: band from Manchester who had a lot of hits
[01:00:40] [SPEAKER_02]: in the kind of 90s
[01:00:41] [SPEAKER_02]: did not know that they were a US
[01:00:43] [SPEAKER_02]: they made it over there
[01:00:45] [SPEAKER_02]: but there we go
[01:00:46] [SPEAKER_01]: you're not a party in Chicago if that song isn't playing all night
[01:00:52] [SPEAKER_02]: it's the cubs anthem didn't you know
[01:00:54] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm like oh no
[01:00:56] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah I thought it was a great
[01:00:57] [SPEAKER_02]: song to pick
[01:00:59] [SPEAKER_02]: but yeah the idea of only one song playing at a party
[01:01:03] [SPEAKER_02]: but yes
[01:01:04] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't even know how we got onto this
[01:01:06] [SPEAKER_02]: we were talking about Karmie and Joel McHale
[01:01:09] [SPEAKER_01]: we were all over the place, we were talking about Karmie and Joel McHale
[01:01:11] [SPEAKER_01]: we were talking about your
[01:01:13] [SPEAKER_01]: some theories you'd had about how the season might end
[01:01:16] [SPEAKER_01]: but didn't
[01:01:17] [SPEAKER_01]: we've dotted around quite a lot here
[01:01:19] [SPEAKER_02]: oh according to Wikipedia
[01:01:21] [SPEAKER_02]: laid became a hit on American College Radio
[01:01:24] [SPEAKER_02]: in the 90s
[01:01:25] [SPEAKER_01]: well this
[01:01:26] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean this is a show based on the
[01:01:29] [SPEAKER_01]: College Radio and College Radio
[01:01:31] [SPEAKER_01]: which might be why we like it so much
[01:01:33] [SPEAKER_02]: because the other song, the one that James
[01:01:35] [SPEAKER_02]: are most famous for
[01:01:37] [SPEAKER_02]: in the UK
[01:01:38] [SPEAKER_02]: what would you say is
[01:01:40] [SPEAKER_01]: oh what's that song called
[01:01:42] [SPEAKER_02]: sit down
[01:01:44] [SPEAKER_02]: sit down
[01:01:45] [SPEAKER_02]: down down down down
[01:01:47] [SPEAKER_02]: in sympathy
[01:01:50] [SPEAKER_02]: good to hear a bit James
[01:01:52] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to pass back to you because I'm just talking gibberish now
[01:01:55] [SPEAKER_01]: okay so
[01:01:56] [SPEAKER_01]: Gillian Gibberish
[01:01:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Gillian Gibberish
[01:02:00] [SPEAKER_01]: well okay something I really want to talk about
[01:02:03] [SPEAKER_01]: is
[01:02:04] [SPEAKER_01]: the chef cameos
[01:02:05] [SPEAKER_02]: you're so excited about this
[01:02:07] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm excited about it
[01:02:08] [SPEAKER_02]: Wikipedia searches for chefs have gone up 10
[01:02:11] [SPEAKER_02]: fold since you watched this episode
[01:02:13] [SPEAKER_01]: so for those of you who are wanting
[01:02:15] [SPEAKER_01]: just something to lean on
[01:02:17] [SPEAKER_01]: for this
[01:02:20] [SPEAKER_01]: there's a neat little summary
[01:02:21] [SPEAKER_01]: in Bon Appetit magazine
[01:02:23] [SPEAKER_02]: we do like Bon Appetit
[01:02:25] [SPEAKER_01]: we can link to that again
[01:02:27] [SPEAKER_01]: in the show notes if anyone's interested to read that
[01:02:30] [SPEAKER_01]: but they give us
[01:02:31] [SPEAKER_01]: a summary of the chefs
[01:02:33] [SPEAKER_01]: and a little bit
[01:02:35] [SPEAKER_01]: about why they are
[01:02:36] [SPEAKER_01]: relevant and it's noticeable
[01:02:39] [SPEAKER_01]: that
[01:02:42] [SPEAKER_01]: around about
[01:02:43] [SPEAKER_01]: 50% of them on this list
[01:02:45] [SPEAKER_01]: seem to have an obvious connection
[01:02:47] [SPEAKER_01]: to Chicago that it's not
[01:02:48] [SPEAKER_01]: immediately clear from the list that they all do
[01:02:50] [SPEAKER_01]: but certainly a lot of them do
[01:02:53] [SPEAKER_02]: and so just to be
[01:02:55] [SPEAKER_02]: abundantly clear everyone
[01:02:57] [SPEAKER_02]: at that table apart
[01:02:58] [SPEAKER_02]: from Will Poulter's look at
[01:03:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Iowa Diberius's
[01:03:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Jeremy Allen White as
[01:03:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Karmie everyone there is a real chef
[01:03:07] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah and I
[01:03:08] [SPEAKER_01]: wish I'd managed to find more
[01:03:11] [SPEAKER_01]: about
[01:03:12] [SPEAKER_01]: how that was filmed and how it was
[01:03:14] [SPEAKER_01]: conceived
[01:03:16] [SPEAKER_02]: I thought about this today
[01:03:18] [SPEAKER_02]: did they sit down and have a conversation
[01:03:20] [SPEAKER_02]: and then cut it
[01:03:22] [SPEAKER_02]: to fit what was happening
[01:03:23] [SPEAKER_02]: it's fascinating
[01:03:26] [SPEAKER_01]: the show is almost
[01:03:28] [SPEAKER_01]: it's not
[01:03:30] [SPEAKER_01]: necessarily even a documentary
[01:03:31] [SPEAKER_01]: it's almost like a modern reality show
[01:03:34] [SPEAKER_01]: where it's a scripted reality
[01:03:36] [SPEAKER_01]: or something like that
[01:03:37] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah or like a scripted
[01:03:38] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, yeah
[01:03:40] [SPEAKER_02]: it's like a live chat show
[01:03:43] [SPEAKER_01]: and it's really cool
[01:03:46] [SPEAKER_01]: and I think as a
[01:03:47] [SPEAKER_01]: constantly
[01:03:48] [SPEAKER_01]: the beer is just this tribute
[01:03:52] [SPEAKER_01]: is his love letter to
[01:03:53] [SPEAKER_01]: chefs and restaurants
[01:03:55] [SPEAKER_01]: and I think never is that more clear
[01:03:57] [SPEAKER_01]: than when they gather all these chefs
[01:03:59] [SPEAKER_01]: who are a big important deal
[01:04:00] [SPEAKER_01]: we put them together and just let them
[01:04:03] [SPEAKER_01]: talk to the cast
[01:04:05] [SPEAKER_01]: and what feels like a really open natural way
[01:04:07] [SPEAKER_01]: and I'll mention
[01:04:09] [SPEAKER_01]: a couple, I'll give you
[01:04:11] [SPEAKER_01]: the names of them
[01:04:12] [SPEAKER_01]: so we mentioned one of them already
[01:04:14] [SPEAKER_01]: that was Grant Ashats or Achats
[01:04:17] [SPEAKER_01]: once sous chef at the French Laundry
[01:04:20] [SPEAKER_01]: he has
[01:04:21] [SPEAKER_01]: the long conversation with Will Poulter
[01:04:23] [SPEAKER_01]: Willie Defrain or Defresney
[01:04:26] [SPEAKER_01]: associated with a number
[01:04:27] [SPEAKER_01]: of pretty important restaurants
[01:04:30] [SPEAKER_01]: Christina Tossi
[01:04:32] [SPEAKER_01]: founded Bakery Chain
[01:04:35] [SPEAKER_01]: Milk Bar
[01:04:36] [SPEAKER_01]: amongst a number of things
[01:04:39] [SPEAKER_01]: Kevin Bohem
[01:04:40] [SPEAKER_01]: former bartender turned
[01:04:42] [SPEAKER_01]: restaurateur
[01:04:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Anna Posi
[01:04:45] [SPEAKER_01]: owns
[01:04:46] [SPEAKER_01]: a Chicago restaurant named Elsk
[01:04:48] [SPEAKER_01]: or Elsky with her husband David
[01:04:50] [SPEAKER_01]: it's been named as a best restaurant
[01:04:52] [SPEAKER_01]: in Chicago
[01:04:55] [SPEAKER_01]: Rosie Sanchez
[01:04:56] [SPEAKER_01]: Chicago Born
[01:04:57] [SPEAKER_01]: Will Guadara
[01:05:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Jeanie Kwon who we've mentioned already
[01:05:02] [SPEAKER_01]: and the last
[01:05:04] [SPEAKER_01]: chef that I want to mention because I think in some ways
[01:05:06] [SPEAKER_01]: the most interesting one to talk about
[01:05:08] [SPEAKER_01]: briefly is Malcolm Livingston
[01:05:10] [SPEAKER_01]: the second
[01:05:12] [SPEAKER_01]: why are we interested to talk about Malcolm Livingston the second
[01:05:15] [SPEAKER_02]: because the first was a lot
[01:05:16] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, Malcolm Livingston the first must have been amazing
[01:05:18] [SPEAKER_01]: well in Scotland
[01:05:20] [SPEAKER_01]: we would count him as Malcolm Livingston the seventh
[01:05:22] [SPEAKER_02]: it was Malcolm Livingston the seventh and second
[01:05:24] [SPEAKER_01]: that was only
[01:05:26] [SPEAKER_01]: when the accession of the restaurants happened
[01:05:28] [SPEAKER_01]: in 1800
[01:05:30] [SPEAKER_01]: because
[01:05:31] [SPEAKER_02]: he went for a hair cut during service
[01:05:33] [SPEAKER_01]: and Christopher Storich says
[01:05:37] [SPEAKER_01]: his stint
[01:05:38] [SPEAKER_01]: as pastry chef at Noma
[01:05:41] [SPEAKER_01]: was the inspiration
[01:05:42] [SPEAKER_01]: for Marcus
[01:05:44] [SPEAKER_01]: so Malcolm Livingston
[01:05:46] [SPEAKER_01]: the second
[01:05:46] [SPEAKER_01]: a bit like Thomas Keller
[01:05:51] [SPEAKER_01]: is actually
[01:05:52] [SPEAKER_01]: the basis
[01:05:53] [SPEAKER_01]: for some of the people that we were seeing
[01:05:56] [SPEAKER_01]: portrayed
[01:05:57] [SPEAKER_01]: that's amazing
[01:05:58] [SPEAKER_01]: I think that's kind of nice because I think he
[01:06:00] [SPEAKER_01]: he's one of the people who in some ways
[01:06:03] [SPEAKER_01]: sticks out in that sequence he's the most relaxed
[01:06:05] [SPEAKER_01]: he's got that memorable anecdote to tell
[01:06:07] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah
[01:06:08] [SPEAKER_02]: I thought I O. Eddabarian will pull to smash it as well
[01:06:12] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if we were watching
[01:06:13] [SPEAKER_02]: I or if we were watching Sid
[01:06:15] [SPEAKER_02]: at various points like she just seemed so comfortable
[01:06:18] [SPEAKER_01]: they had such good chemistry
[01:06:19] [SPEAKER_01]: I got out of the two of them
[01:06:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Wooo! Marcus I'm so sorry
[01:06:24] [SPEAKER_02]: go for it guys
[01:06:25] [SPEAKER_02]: I think you've been usurped by the man
[01:06:27] [SPEAKER_02]: with the arms
[01:06:29] [SPEAKER_01]: just the arms
[01:06:30] [SPEAKER_02]: I think it's fine because Will Poulter what was the first thing you ever saw Will Poulter in?
[01:06:35] [SPEAKER_01]: oh he was a
[01:06:36] [SPEAKER_01]: he was a child actor
[01:06:37] [SPEAKER_02]: the first thing I ever saw him in was in 2007
[01:06:40] [SPEAKER_02]: a film called Son of Rambo
[01:06:42] [SPEAKER_02]: that's right
[01:06:43] [SPEAKER_02]: and he was tiny
[01:06:45] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't think his voice had even broken so it's so funny to me
[01:06:48] [SPEAKER_02]: when I see Will Poulter now and I'm like oh my god
[01:06:50] [SPEAKER_02]: he's like 12 no he's 31
[01:06:51] [SPEAKER_02]: and he's enormous
[01:06:53] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean it's amazing he's great
[01:06:56] [SPEAKER_02]: he's very very funny
[01:06:57] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah I think
[01:07:00] [SPEAKER_02]: I hope they're building up to him and Sid having a little
[01:07:02] [SPEAKER_02]: free song
[01:07:03] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah I think we'd all be
[01:07:06] [SPEAKER_01]: very happy for them
[01:07:07] [SPEAKER_02]: but what you were saying about the chefs
[01:07:09] [SPEAKER_02]: I now have a whole list of restaurants I want to visit
[01:07:12] [SPEAKER_02]: so that's great
[01:07:13] [SPEAKER_01]: effectively you can treat that
[01:07:15] [SPEAKER_01]: list of cameos as the basis
[01:07:17] [SPEAKER_01]: for a Chicago tour of
[01:07:19] [SPEAKER_01]: restaurants perfect
[01:07:20] [SPEAKER_02]: what are you doing next summer?
[01:07:22] [SPEAKER_01]: which ones do you think my niece would most like to be too?
[01:07:26] [SPEAKER_02]: which ones are child friendly
[01:07:27] [SPEAKER_02]: you know she's quite discerning
[01:07:29] [SPEAKER_02]: I think she's enjoying most of them
[01:07:31] [SPEAKER_01]: she's more discerning than I am
[01:07:31] [SPEAKER_01]: I can't afford to eat with her
[01:07:35] [SPEAKER_02]: she's too classy
[01:07:36] [SPEAKER_02]: too classy for us
[01:07:37] [SPEAKER_02]: it's brilliant and I loved it
[01:07:38] [SPEAKER_02]: the one thing that frustrated me though
[01:07:41] [SPEAKER_02]: is I was like this is a finale episode to the season
[01:07:44] [SPEAKER_02]: then I feel like we're spending a lot of time
[01:07:46] [SPEAKER_02]: not on the storyline
[01:07:47] [SPEAKER_02]: I almost wanted this to be its own episode
[01:07:50] [SPEAKER_02]: of like a round table with chefs
[01:07:52] [SPEAKER_02]: because I loved it but I was like
[01:07:53] [SPEAKER_02]: bud bud bud bud bud
[01:07:55] [SPEAKER_01]: unless we're
[01:07:57] [SPEAKER_01]: unless we're honest with ourselves
[01:08:00] [SPEAKER_01]: and we all just
[01:08:02] [SPEAKER_01]: agree to say this is a mid-season break
[01:08:04] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah I think that's what it has to be
[01:08:06] [SPEAKER_01]: because I think
[01:08:08] [SPEAKER_01]: if you call this a mid-season break
[01:08:10] [SPEAKER_01]: it all makes sense
[01:08:12] [SPEAKER_01]: and it feels like a really
[01:08:14] [SPEAKER_01]: natural place to pause
[01:08:16] [SPEAKER_01]: the fact that it says to be continued
[01:08:18] [SPEAKER_01]: at the end
[01:08:19] [SPEAKER_02]: I can't be a berserk
[01:08:22] [SPEAKER_02]: we'll return
[01:08:27] [SPEAKER_01]: but they've called it
[01:08:29] [SPEAKER_01]: they've called it a season
[01:08:30] [SPEAKER_01]: and I'd love to know why
[01:08:32] [SPEAKER_01]: because I'm sure you and I didn't
[01:08:34] [SPEAKER_01]: invent that idea there
[01:08:36] [SPEAKER_01]: you know someone
[01:08:37] [SPEAKER_01]: there must have been conversations about that
[01:08:40] [SPEAKER_01]: and I'm really curious to know why
[01:08:43] [SPEAKER_01]: why they decided to space them out
[01:08:44] [SPEAKER_01]: and treat them as two separate seasons
[01:08:46] [SPEAKER_01]: because I wonder
[01:08:48] [SPEAKER_01]: if some of those reviews
[01:08:51] [SPEAKER_01]: that were a bit hard on season 3
[01:08:53] [SPEAKER_01]: might have been a bit forgiving
[01:08:55] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah if they were allowing
[01:08:56] [SPEAKER_01]: that you didn't have to treat it
[01:08:58] [SPEAKER_01]: as a complete thing
[01:09:01] [SPEAKER_01]: you could accept that
[01:09:02] [SPEAKER_01]: all the stuff was going to pay off
[01:09:04] [SPEAKER_01]: in the culmination of the story
[01:09:06] [SPEAKER_01]: and I really do think this
[01:09:08] [SPEAKER_01]: I think there is so much
[01:09:11] [SPEAKER_01]: cool stuff where they're
[01:09:12] [SPEAKER_01]: experimenting with the form
[01:09:14] [SPEAKER_01]: and playing around
[01:09:14] [SPEAKER_01]: and doing things are individually really interesting
[01:09:18] [SPEAKER_01]: I think you can take most episodes
[01:09:23] [SPEAKER_01]: of this season
[01:09:26] [SPEAKER_01]: sit them on their own
[01:09:27] [SPEAKER_01]: and say
[01:09:28] [SPEAKER_01]: there was something really really cool here
[01:09:29] [SPEAKER_01]: there was something I haven't seen before
[01:09:31] [SPEAKER_01]: or I was genuinely moved by
[01:09:33] [SPEAKER_01]: that
[01:09:34] [SPEAKER_01]: and there's all this brilliant stuff
[01:09:38] [SPEAKER_01]: in season 3
[01:09:40] [SPEAKER_01]: but
[01:09:41] [SPEAKER_01]: where it falls down, where we all get frustrated
[01:09:43] [SPEAKER_01]: about it is when you then try to
[01:09:45] [SPEAKER_01]: pull it together and try to view it as some sort of
[01:09:47] [SPEAKER_01]: piece of whole
[01:09:49] [SPEAKER_01]: there's bits kind of falling through your fingers
[01:09:51] [SPEAKER_02]: I think that's right to be honest
[01:09:53] [SPEAKER_02]: you did miss one chef
[01:09:55] [SPEAKER_02]: from the pictures at the start
[01:09:58] [SPEAKER_01]: and I know who it is
[01:09:59] [SPEAKER_01]: who is it?
[01:10:01] [SPEAKER_01]: he's a famous actor
[01:10:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Bradley Cooper
[01:10:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Bradley Cooper who played
[01:10:08] [SPEAKER_02]: a chef in a film
[01:10:10] [SPEAKER_01]: do you think the props department
[01:10:12] [SPEAKER_01]: were having a bit of fun?
[01:10:13] [SPEAKER_02]: I think they were
[01:10:14] [SPEAKER_02]: I also loved the needle drop for the intro
[01:10:16] [SPEAKER_02]: made me think of Jason
[01:10:18] [SPEAKER_02]: what was the needle drop?
[01:10:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Weezer in the garage
[01:10:24] [SPEAKER_02]: great start to the episode
[01:10:25] [SPEAKER_02]: alright I loved it
[01:10:27] [SPEAKER_02]: thank you for that
[01:10:28] [SPEAKER_02]: you didn't mention Adam Shapiro
[01:10:30] [SPEAKER_02]: who I assume is also a famous chef as well
[01:10:32] [SPEAKER_02]: as being Adam Shapiro
[01:10:33] [SPEAKER_02]: on which timeline?
[01:10:36] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know it's the Shapiro verse
[01:10:37] [SPEAKER_01]: exactly
[01:10:39] [SPEAKER_01]: did you catch something?
[01:10:41] [SPEAKER_01]: I now have a conspiracy theory
[01:10:45] [SPEAKER_01]: amazing hit me
[01:10:46] [SPEAKER_02]: about Forks
[01:10:49] [SPEAKER_01]: yep and Adam Shapiro
[01:10:51] [SPEAKER_02]: the episode or the implement
[01:10:52] [SPEAKER_02]: maybe both
[01:10:56] [SPEAKER_01]: when Richie first arrives
[01:10:58] [SPEAKER_01]: at Ever
[01:10:59] [SPEAKER_01]: in Forks
[01:11:01] [SPEAKER_01]: you'll remember there's a big
[01:11:03] [SPEAKER_01]: there's a big argument going on
[01:11:05] [SPEAKER_01]: and it's
[01:11:06] [SPEAKER_01]: come forward admit that you did it
[01:11:09] [SPEAKER_02]: oh
[01:11:10] [SPEAKER_02]: the smear
[01:11:13] [SPEAKER_01]: what does Will Poulter
[01:11:15] [SPEAKER_01]: say to Adam Shapiro?
[01:11:18] [SPEAKER_02]: no! calls him like thumbprint
[01:11:19] [SPEAKER_02]: or something or fingerprint
[01:11:22] [SPEAKER_01]: smudge
[01:11:23] [SPEAKER_02]: smudge
[01:11:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Shapiro you dirty dog
[01:11:27] [SPEAKER_01]: did Shapiro
[01:11:30] [SPEAKER_01]: smudge whatever that thing was
[01:11:31] [SPEAKER_01]: and then
[01:11:32] [SPEAKER_01]: is that why
[01:11:34] [SPEAKER_01]: all of those extremely diligent people
[01:11:36] [SPEAKER_01]: and ever weren't coming forward to pick their hands up
[01:11:39] [SPEAKER_01]: it's because none of them did it
[01:11:41] [SPEAKER_01]: it was Shapiro
[01:11:41] [SPEAKER_01]: it was Shapiro all along
[01:11:44] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah
[01:11:46] [SPEAKER_01]: I know how deep does this go
[01:11:49] [SPEAKER_02]: cause I was thinking right when he
[01:11:51] [SPEAKER_02]: and so Sid's talking to Luca
[01:11:53] [SPEAKER_02]: in the kitchen again
[01:11:54] [SPEAKER_02]: these are the work there why are they in the kitchen
[01:11:56] [SPEAKER_02]: anyway um and Shapiro comes out
[01:11:58] [SPEAKER_02]: and I was like oh
[01:12:00] [SPEAKER_02]: what if Luca tells
[01:12:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Sid something about him or is like
[01:12:04] [SPEAKER_02]: don't trust him or he's not a good guy
[01:12:06] [SPEAKER_02]: but it seemed like they were just giving each other shit
[01:12:08] [SPEAKER_02]: in a friendly way
[01:12:09] [SPEAKER_01]: or he's a Forks smudger
[01:12:11] [SPEAKER_02]: but now we know this
[01:12:17] [SPEAKER_02]: it goes deep
[01:12:20] [SPEAKER_02]: I think it does
[01:12:21] [SPEAKER_02]: jings
[01:12:22] [SPEAKER_01]: so that's my conspiracy theory everybody
[01:12:26] [SPEAKER_01]: assuming
[01:12:28] [SPEAKER_01]: my big bet doesn't
[01:12:30] [SPEAKER_01]: pay off
[01:12:31] [SPEAKER_01]: and we don't
[01:12:34] [SPEAKER_01]: see the bear close
[01:12:35] [SPEAKER_01]: or get shut down in season 4
[01:12:38] [SPEAKER_01]: I
[01:12:41] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm waiting to see
[01:12:42] [SPEAKER_01]: the big reveal of who did this smudge
[01:12:44] [SPEAKER_01]: smudgy Shapiro
[01:12:45] [SPEAKER_01]: I think it was one of
[01:12:48] [SPEAKER_01]: the one of the multi-versal
[01:12:50] [SPEAKER_01]: manifestations of Adam Shapiro
[01:12:52] [SPEAKER_02]: do you think season 4's
[01:12:55] [SPEAKER_02]: Forks will be smudge
[01:12:56] [SPEAKER_02]: and it'll just be Shapiro
[01:12:58] [SPEAKER_01]: just some really harrowing scenes
[01:13:00] [SPEAKER_01]: of smart of Forks with little finger prints on them
[01:13:03] [SPEAKER_02]: love that
[01:13:04] [SPEAKER_02]: I love that yes I
[01:13:06] [SPEAKER_02]: let's talk about Forks let's talk about Richie
[01:13:08] [SPEAKER_02]: he came back he's so happy
[01:13:10] [SPEAKER_02]: they love him he just has a nice night
[01:13:12] [SPEAKER_02]: he just has a nice night Renny Goobay
[01:13:14] [SPEAKER_02]: can we talk about Renny Goobay
[01:13:15] [SPEAKER_02]: lovely guy
[01:13:17] [SPEAKER_02]: he's an exact producer on this show
[01:13:19] [SPEAKER_02]: and he turns up as one of the head service people
[01:13:22] [SPEAKER_02]: he also iconically plays
[01:13:24] [SPEAKER_02]: father bra in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
[01:13:25] [SPEAKER_02]: great show one of our favourites
[01:13:27] [SPEAKER_02]: definitely watch Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
[01:13:29] [SPEAKER_02]: but yeah we've got Renny Goobay
[01:13:30] [SPEAKER_02]: we've got Chef Jess they're definitely setting up a little romance there for Richie
[01:13:34] [SPEAKER_01]: I'd be really sad
[01:13:36] [SPEAKER_01]: if they didn't because again
[01:13:39] [SPEAKER_01]: a bit like
[01:13:40] [SPEAKER_01]: a bit like we were talking about
[01:13:42] [SPEAKER_01]: with well
[01:13:43] [SPEAKER_01]: well Poole, Tours character, Chef Luca
[01:13:45] [SPEAKER_01]: and Sid
[01:13:47] [SPEAKER_01]: there's just such a lovely energy
[01:13:49] [SPEAKER_01]: between them
[01:13:50] [SPEAKER_02]: and when he asks her about how to keep the energy up
[01:13:53] [SPEAKER_02]: because he's clearly struggling with that
[01:13:55] [SPEAKER_02]: at the bear at the moment and she just says
[01:13:57] [SPEAKER_02]: she surrounds herself with people who are better than myself
[01:13:59] [SPEAKER_02]: and she doesn't mean it work
[01:14:01] [SPEAKER_02]: and I love that I thought that was such a cool philosophy
[01:14:03] [SPEAKER_02]: and I just love that they were also welcoming
[01:14:05] [SPEAKER_02]: to him because it would mean so disheartening if he went back
[01:14:07] [SPEAKER_02]: and they're like who are you
[01:14:08] [SPEAKER_02]: but clearly they enjoyed having him
[01:14:11] [SPEAKER_02]: as much as he enjoyed being there and that's just nice
[01:14:13] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah and they called back
[01:14:14] [SPEAKER_01]: to a little bit of that music from Forks as well
[01:14:17] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah the sci-fi kind of electronica
[01:14:19] [SPEAKER_02]: music yeah
[01:14:20] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah and I like
[01:14:22] [SPEAKER_01]: they didn't do anything to undermine
[01:14:25] [SPEAKER_01]: the fact that that was just
[01:14:27] [SPEAKER_01]: just a positive
[01:14:28] [SPEAKER_02]: just a really good thing for Richie
[01:14:30] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah no I like that too
[01:14:32] [SPEAKER_02]: I
[01:14:34] [SPEAKER_02]: am I sort of into notes now
[01:14:36] [SPEAKER_02]: I might just be kind of into notes now
[01:14:37] [SPEAKER_02]: do you have any other sort of cogent points
[01:14:41] [SPEAKER_01]: cogent points no
[01:14:42] [SPEAKER_01]: my note
[01:14:43] [SPEAKER_01]: such as it was was about
[01:14:45] [SPEAKER_01]: about the smudges yeah I love that
[01:14:48] [SPEAKER_02]: the Shapiro smudge conspiracy
[01:14:49] [SPEAKER_01]: and I think you already got that I don't think
[01:14:51] [SPEAKER_02]: about you you don't think about me
[01:14:53] [SPEAKER_01]: all the time baby
[01:14:55] [SPEAKER_02]: aww I don't think about you at all
[01:14:57] [SPEAKER_02]: oh this is what
[01:14:59] [SPEAKER_02]: it feels like I am Don Draper
[01:15:01] [SPEAKER_02]: always
[01:15:03] [SPEAKER_01]: don't let people do that to you don't be like me right now
[01:15:05] [SPEAKER_01]: I do everybody
[01:15:06] [SPEAKER_02]: I enjoyed the sharing of the first dish stories
[01:15:09] [SPEAKER_02]: the first things that they made
[01:15:10] [SPEAKER_02]: I loved hearing about those experiences
[01:15:12] [SPEAKER_02]: connections that people have to food
[01:15:14] [SPEAKER_02]: and yeah all this time Karmie can't get out of his own head
[01:15:17] [SPEAKER_02]: we see flashes of people at the bear
[01:15:19] [SPEAKER_02]: having fun making candy floss
[01:15:21] [SPEAKER_02]: doing their wine scratch and sniff
[01:15:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Chef Terry shares this story about London
[01:15:25] [SPEAKER_02]: and people don't remember the food it's the people they remember
[01:15:28] [SPEAKER_02]: which I think is true
[01:15:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Sid and Luca have a discussion about being an only child
[01:15:32] [SPEAKER_02]: versus having a sibling
[01:15:34] [SPEAKER_02]: which I thought was interesting
[01:15:36] [SPEAKER_02]: talking about going through a battle together
[01:15:38] [SPEAKER_02]: but also having proof that things were good
[01:15:40] [SPEAKER_02]: when you have a sibling
[01:15:41] [SPEAKER_02]: but then when you're an only child that being a little bit different
[01:15:43] [SPEAKER_02]: which I thought was an interesting antidote
[01:15:45] [SPEAKER_02]: to some of the stuff we've seen with the Brasato dynamics
[01:15:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Shapiro is really anxious
[01:15:50] [SPEAKER_02]: for Sid to give him an answer
[01:15:51] [SPEAKER_02]: it seems like she's gonna say yes
[01:15:53] [SPEAKER_02]: but it's getting to that point of being able to say yes
[01:15:57] [SPEAKER_02]: I liked
[01:15:57] [SPEAKER_02]: that Chef Terry's advice to herself
[01:15:59] [SPEAKER_02]: would be you have no idea what you're doing
[01:16:01] [SPEAKER_02]: and therefore you are invincible
[01:16:02] [SPEAKER_02]: and I did laugh that Sid and Richie were present
[01:16:05] [SPEAKER_02]: for the every second count sign getting taken down
[01:16:07] [SPEAKER_02]: when like most of the rest of the stuff were not
[01:16:10] [SPEAKER_02]: the party just looked really fun
[01:16:11] [SPEAKER_02]: it did
[01:16:13] [SPEAKER_02]: Andrea Terry loves this shit
[01:16:15] [SPEAKER_02]: and service bitches
[01:16:16] [SPEAKER_02]: you know how some people have those like
[01:16:19] [SPEAKER_02]: inspirational live-lifes love things in their kitchens
[01:16:21] [SPEAKER_02]: I would get one that says service bitches
[01:16:26] [SPEAKER_01]: not Andrea Terry loves this shit
[01:16:27] [SPEAKER_02]: I would also get Andrea Terry loves this shit
[01:16:30] [SPEAKER_02]: I love that the facts are there
[01:16:31] [SPEAKER_02]: and that Tina and Marcus are also there
[01:16:33] [SPEAKER_02]: we see Sidney looking at the old
[01:16:36] [SPEAKER_02]: Bear review which I assume is the one
[01:16:37] [SPEAKER_02]: that caused the stress in season 1
[01:16:41] [SPEAKER_02]: and we see flashes of everyone
[01:16:42] [SPEAKER_02]: kind of where they are now
[01:16:44] [SPEAKER_02]: and where they were when Sidney first met them
[01:16:46] [SPEAKER_02]: and that leads to Sidney kind of having a panic attack
[01:16:49] [SPEAKER_02]: in the stairwell
[01:16:49] [SPEAKER_02]: but the panic attack could have been caused
[01:16:52] [SPEAKER_02]: by there only being one song at the party
[01:16:55] [SPEAKER_02]: for many hours
[01:16:56] [SPEAKER_01]: that would break me
[01:16:57] [SPEAKER_02]: but yeah that's kind of the end of my
[01:16:59] [SPEAKER_02]: notes I have some IMDb
[01:17:01] [SPEAKER_02]: go on
[01:17:02] [SPEAKER_02]: nothing that exciting
[01:17:03] [SPEAKER_02]: I love that IMDb the person that's written this calls
[01:17:06] [SPEAKER_02]: When Bear is sketching in his notebook
[01:17:08] [SPEAKER_02]: the camera pans to his collection of hardcover cookbooks
[01:17:11] [SPEAKER_02]: stacked randomly on the floor beneath the window
[01:17:13] [SPEAKER_02]: among the many 50 plus
[01:17:15] [SPEAKER_02]: cookbooks are two from Tartine
[01:17:16] [SPEAKER_02]: the celebrated San Francisco Bakery
[01:17:18] [SPEAKER_02]: as these books cost $42 each
[01:17:20] [SPEAKER_02]: as of 28th of June 2024
[01:17:22] [SPEAKER_02]: it is probable that the entire collection cost
[01:17:25] [SPEAKER_02]: over $2,500
[01:17:27] [SPEAKER_02]: so a bit of
[01:17:29] [SPEAKER_02]: book shaming I would say there
[01:17:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Richie says to Tiffany it's all good baby baby
[01:17:33] [SPEAKER_02]: which is possibly a reference
[01:17:35] [SPEAKER_02]: to notorious B.I.G's juicy
[01:17:36] [SPEAKER_02]: okay I'll do this one as a trivia question
[01:17:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Ebon, Moss, Backerac
[01:17:41] [SPEAKER_02]: and Gillian Jacobs were both love interests
[01:17:43] [SPEAKER_02]: of a main character in which show
[01:17:46] [SPEAKER_01]: girls
[01:17:46] [SPEAKER_01]: yes
[01:17:47] [SPEAKER_02]: what was his name again, Desi
[01:17:50] [SPEAKER_01]: that's right isn't it
[01:17:51] [SPEAKER_02]: he was so funny in that role
[01:17:55] [SPEAKER_02]: and we've covered the others
[01:17:57] [SPEAKER_02]: pictures of Bradley Cooper
[01:17:58] [SPEAKER_02]: he played a hyper obsessed chef in Burnt
[01:18:01] [SPEAKER_02]: 2015 also going for his first Michelin
[01:18:03] [SPEAKER_02]: star
[01:18:04] [SPEAKER_02]: the people around the table talking about cooking and being a chef
[01:18:06] [SPEAKER_02]: are actual chefs, not actors
[01:18:08] [SPEAKER_02]: and then there's one about a piece of amber
[01:18:11] [SPEAKER_02]: on the main kitchen counter which just describes
[01:18:13] [SPEAKER_02]: what amber is
[01:18:14] [SPEAKER_02]: and then says also seen in Jurassic Park
[01:18:16] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't remember seeing any amber
[01:18:17] [SPEAKER_01]: you know I saw that list
[01:18:19] [SPEAKER_01]: and so I looked out for it and it is there
[01:18:22] [SPEAKER_02]: where? which kitchen
[01:18:24] [SPEAKER_01]: we
[01:18:25] [SPEAKER_01]: there's a scene where
[01:18:28] [SPEAKER_01]: which kitchen
[01:18:30] [SPEAKER_01]: the bear
[01:18:32] [SPEAKER_01]: Sid and Karmie
[01:18:33] [SPEAKER_01]: are talking to each other across the counter
[01:18:35] [SPEAKER_01]: I think it's when
[01:18:37] [SPEAKER_01]: Karmie trying to get the
[01:18:39] [SPEAKER_01]: get the dish right
[01:18:41] [SPEAKER_03]: right
[01:18:43] yeah
[01:18:45] [SPEAKER_01]: annoyingly because when I
[01:18:46] [SPEAKER_01]: when I read that bit of trivia on IMDB
[01:18:47] [SPEAKER_01]: I was like that's not
[01:18:49] [SPEAKER_01]: really a bit of trivia
[01:18:51] [SPEAKER_01]: but strangely when you do go back and watch the scene
[01:18:55] [SPEAKER_01]: it's quite prominent
[01:18:56] [SPEAKER_01]: you can see it
[01:18:57] [SPEAKER_01]: and you're thinking to yourself that's a huge bit of amber
[01:19:00] [SPEAKER_01]: what's that doing there
[01:19:01] [SPEAKER_02]: probably for one of the dishes
[01:19:03] [SPEAKER_02]: amazing do you have anything else to add about
[01:19:05] [SPEAKER_02]: season 3 episode 9
[01:19:07] [SPEAKER_02]: or season 3 episode 10
[01:19:09] [SPEAKER_02]: fabulous well we'll take a break
[01:19:11] [SPEAKER_02]: there is more to come stay with us
[01:19:14] [SPEAKER_02]: we're about to introduce
[01:19:15] [SPEAKER_02]: our cooking segment in which we
[01:19:17] [SPEAKER_02]: truss and roast a chicken
[01:19:19] [SPEAKER_01]: yes we are
[01:19:19] [SPEAKER_02]: okay this feels weird we're cooking
[01:19:26] [SPEAKER_02]: in our own kitchen again for the first time since our holiday
[01:19:29] [SPEAKER_02]: well recording for the first time since our holiday
[01:19:31] [SPEAKER_02]: obviously we've eaten food
[01:19:33] [SPEAKER_01]: that's true we have eaten food
[01:19:35] [SPEAKER_01]: although now that we're insisting on it it feels less
[01:19:37] [SPEAKER_01]: credible than if we just taken it as red
[01:19:39] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah um we promise
[01:19:41] [SPEAKER_02]: this is real
[01:19:42] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah this is as real
[01:19:44] [SPEAKER_01]: as the magic of audio
[01:19:45] [SPEAKER_01]: allows it to be
[01:19:46] [SPEAKER_02]: do you want to talk us through what we're doing today and why we decided to do it
[01:19:50] [SPEAKER_01]: so we're keeping it simple
[01:19:52] [SPEAKER_01]: but we hope we're also keeping it
[01:19:54] [SPEAKER_01]: kind of relevant and interesting
[01:19:56] [SPEAKER_01]: so obviously
[01:19:57] [SPEAKER_01]: by the time that you're listening to this
[01:20:00] [SPEAKER_01]: you will all have watched
[01:20:01] [SPEAKER_01]: the last couple of episodes of
[01:20:03] [SPEAKER_01]: the bear season 3
[01:20:05] [SPEAKER_01]: and what you might remember
[01:20:07] [SPEAKER_01]: is one of those little flashbacks where
[01:20:10] [SPEAKER_01]: Karmie
[01:20:11] [SPEAKER_01]: reflects on how he got to where he is
[01:20:13] [SPEAKER_01]: there's a nice moment with a cameo
[01:20:15] [SPEAKER_01]: from a chef called Thomas Keller
[01:20:19] [SPEAKER_01]: and he's a real guy
[01:20:20] [SPEAKER_01]: he's a big deal, he is chef at
[01:20:22] [SPEAKER_01]: the French Laundry
[01:20:23] [SPEAKER_02]: and he's here to...no he's not
[01:20:25] [SPEAKER_01]: and he's definitely not here because he has much
[01:20:28] [SPEAKER_01]: better things to do
[01:20:30] [SPEAKER_01]: but he
[01:20:32] [SPEAKER_01]: French Laundry is obviously
[01:20:34] [SPEAKER_01]: a big deal with I guess the
[01:20:35] [SPEAKER_01]: lore of the bear can I call it
[01:20:37] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah I think something is one of Karmie's
[01:20:40] [SPEAKER_02]: positive formative experiences
[01:20:41] [SPEAKER_01]: yes and it turned out
[01:20:43] [SPEAKER_01]: when we did a little bit looking into that scene
[01:20:45] [SPEAKER_01]: and you'll remember this is a scene where Karmie learns about
[01:20:47] [SPEAKER_01]: two things, he learns about
[01:20:49] [SPEAKER_01]: removing the wishbone when roasting a chicken
[01:20:51] [SPEAKER_01]: and trusting it
[01:20:53] [SPEAKER_01]: and it turns out for those of you who are so inclined
[01:20:57] [SPEAKER_01]: that Thomas Keller has
[01:20:59] [SPEAKER_01]: a master class
[01:21:01] [SPEAKER_01]: where he covers both of those two techniques
[01:21:04] [SPEAKER_01]: so if we thought we would give them a bash
[01:21:05] [SPEAKER_01]: because we actually really like roasting a chicken
[01:21:08] [SPEAKER_01]: it's a really nice thing to do
[01:21:10] [SPEAKER_01]: it's versatile
[01:21:10] [SPEAKER_01]: and it's been one of our little routines for a while
[01:21:13] [SPEAKER_01]: and this is two ways in which
[01:21:15] [SPEAKER_01]: we can up our game
[01:21:17] [SPEAKER_01]: a little bit
[01:21:18] [SPEAKER_02]: I think so and I'm very impressed
[01:21:21] [SPEAKER_02]: by a certain piece of kit that you've got out
[01:21:23] [SPEAKER_02]: do you want to talk a little bit about what you're going to be using
[01:21:25] [SPEAKER_02]: to do this?
[01:21:28] [SPEAKER_01]: I own a chicken boning knife
[01:21:30] [SPEAKER_01]: you do
[01:21:32] [SPEAKER_01]: and that is
[01:21:34] [SPEAKER_01]: something that I bought because I thought it looked kind of cool
[01:21:37] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean it looks amazing
[01:21:38] [SPEAKER_02]: it's some Japanese right?
[01:21:40] yeah
[01:21:41] [SPEAKER_01]: but that means that you need to bone a certain number of chickens
[01:21:44] [SPEAKER_01]: to justify that sitting in your drawer
[01:21:46] [SPEAKER_02]: I think you need to phrase that differently
[01:21:47] [SPEAKER_01]: no I'm phrasing it this way
[01:21:49] [SPEAKER_02]: you're standing with it, where do you come by it?
[01:21:52] [SPEAKER_01]: we bought that in
[01:21:56] [SPEAKER_01]: not Calgary
[01:21:57] [SPEAKER_01]: Edmonton
[01:21:57] [SPEAKER_01]: we bought it in Edmonton in Alberta Canada
[01:22:01] [SPEAKER_01]: where there's a really nice knife shop
[01:22:03] [SPEAKER_01]: called Knifewear
[01:22:04] [SPEAKER_02]: it's brilliant, it's an independent shop
[01:22:06] [SPEAKER_02]: there's a nice little kind of trio of shops up there
[01:22:09] [SPEAKER_02]: there's a sort of gentlemen's shaving equipment
[01:22:11] [SPEAKER_02]: there's a knife monger
[01:22:13] [SPEAKER_02]: and there's also
[01:22:14] [SPEAKER_02]: an amazing spice shop called the Silk Road
[01:22:17] [SPEAKER_02]: now they do online orders for US and Canada
[01:22:19] [SPEAKER_02]: sadly we can't get them here
[01:22:21] [SPEAKER_02]: but they do stuff like spicy hot chocolate
[01:22:23] [SPEAKER_02]: some mint hot chocolate
[01:22:24] [SPEAKER_02]: so we had a very nice culinary
[01:22:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Quote and Stanley Tucci here
[01:22:27] [SPEAKER_02]: a trip to that particular batch of shops in Edmonton
[01:22:31] [SPEAKER_02]: ate some great BBQ
[01:22:33] [SPEAKER_02]: on the same stretch there's a restaurant
[01:22:35] [SPEAKER_02]: that's just called Meat
[01:22:36] [SPEAKER_01]: and that's what they sell
[01:22:38] [SPEAKER_02]: how did you test your knife
[01:22:41] [SPEAKER_02]: in the shop? I always thought this was fascinating
[01:22:46] [SPEAKER_01]: they demonstrated
[01:22:47] [SPEAKER_01]: by slicing through
[01:22:49] [SPEAKER_01]: newspaper
[01:22:50] [SPEAKER_01]: which is also how the guy that sharpens our knives
[01:22:53] [SPEAKER_01]: demonstrated that he'd done a decent job
[01:22:55] [SPEAKER_01]: he tried a couple of weeks ago
[01:22:57] [SPEAKER_02]: because it goes through like butter
[01:22:58] [SPEAKER_02]: if it's a sharp knife it's incredible
[01:23:00] [SPEAKER_02]: I will stop bigging up this knife that you're using
[01:23:04] [SPEAKER_02]: we've got a lovely herb fed chicken
[01:23:06] [SPEAKER_02]: from a local farm
[01:23:07] [SPEAKER_02]: in Yorkshire
[01:23:09] [SPEAKER_02]: we love these guys, their chickens are wonderful
[01:23:13] [SPEAKER_02]: we tend to buy
[01:23:14] [SPEAKER_02]: good welfare chickens
[01:23:16] [SPEAKER_02]: treat meat as a bit of a luxury
[01:23:17] [SPEAKER_02]: so roasting a chicken for us is like
[01:23:19] [SPEAKER_02]: this is going to do us a few dinners this week
[01:23:21] [SPEAKER_01]: once we've made this for tonight
[01:23:23] [SPEAKER_01]: we will repurpose it into
[01:23:25] [SPEAKER_01]: sandwiches
[01:23:26] [SPEAKER_01]: or stir fries
[01:23:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Lucy's secret recipe
[01:23:30] [SPEAKER_01]: which
[01:23:32] [SPEAKER_01]: promise me you won't tell anyone about this
[01:23:35] [SPEAKER_01]: so that it first appears whenever Lucy writes a cookery book
[01:23:39] [SPEAKER_01]: is to make a sandwich
[01:23:40] [SPEAKER_01]: which is a combination of leftover roast chicken
[01:23:44] [SPEAKER_01]: and leftover potato doufounwain
[01:23:48] [SPEAKER_01]: it is majestic
[01:23:49] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean it's not like
[01:23:51] [SPEAKER_02]: you need to sit down after it
[01:23:52] [SPEAKER_02]: you can't really go and have just like a chill time
[01:23:55] [SPEAKER_02]: after you have to kind of give yourself time to digest
[01:23:57] [SPEAKER_01]: I think you need to sit down
[01:23:59] [SPEAKER_01]: just to be able to lift it with our puny tyrannosaurus
[01:24:02] [SPEAKER_01]: arms
[01:24:03] [SPEAKER_01]: because that is a rich meal
[01:24:04] [SPEAKER_01]: cream and potato one chicken
[01:24:06] [SPEAKER_02]: it truly is
[01:24:09] [SPEAKER_02]: it's worth saying that I'm currently standing in front of the oven
[01:24:11] [SPEAKER_02]: where there is some doufounwain
[01:24:13] [SPEAKER_02]: in there already
[01:24:14] [SPEAKER_02]: I'll share the recipe in the show notes
[01:24:16] [SPEAKER_02]: I like Hugh Fernley Whittingstall
[01:24:18] [SPEAKER_02]: Chef famous in Britain primarily
[01:24:20] [SPEAKER_02]: for his devotion to meat
[01:24:21] [SPEAKER_02]: but he did a really good vegetarian cookery book
[01:24:24] [SPEAKER_02]: called Veg
[01:24:24] [SPEAKER_02]: which my mum got me years ago
[01:24:27] [SPEAKER_02]: he's got some smashing stuff in it
[01:24:29] [SPEAKER_02]: I think this is my favourite recipe from it though
[01:24:30] [SPEAKER_02]: it's a really simple potato doufounwain
[01:24:33] [SPEAKER_02]: very decadent, very delicious
[01:24:34] [SPEAKER_02]: but the annoying thing is you have to keep taking it out of the oven
[01:24:37] [SPEAKER_02]: and smooching the potatoes down
[01:24:38] [SPEAKER_02]: to keep them cooking right
[01:24:39] [SPEAKER_01]: and doufounwain is a bit of a labour of love as well
[01:24:41] [SPEAKER_01]: because it takes forever
[01:24:42] [SPEAKER_01]: but it's so good
[01:24:44] [SPEAKER_02]: even you a known potato
[01:24:47] [SPEAKER_02]: not enthusiast, enjoy it
[01:24:49] [SPEAKER_02]: can you tell me a little bit about where this chicken
[01:24:52] [SPEAKER_02]: is going to go once we have
[01:24:54] [SPEAKER_02]: done the boning
[01:24:56] [SPEAKER_02]: and the trussing
[01:24:58] [SPEAKER_01]: and we're sticking to that
[01:25:00] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah we're sticking to that
[01:25:01] [SPEAKER_01]: so after we're done with
[01:25:04] [SPEAKER_01]: boning and trussing
[01:25:04] [SPEAKER_01]: then we are
[01:25:07] [SPEAKER_01]: going to make
[01:25:08] [SPEAKER_01]: a bit of a favourite version
[01:25:10] [SPEAKER_01]: I think we probably mentioned
[01:25:12] [SPEAKER_01]: in the show before we cook a fair
[01:25:14] [SPEAKER_01]: number of Alice and Roman recipes
[01:25:15] [SPEAKER_01]: we do, yep
[01:25:17] [SPEAKER_01]: and I think that's partly because
[01:25:19] [SPEAKER_01]: they're gauged at the right level
[01:25:22] [SPEAKER_01]: for
[01:25:25] [SPEAKER_01]: cooking for two
[01:25:26] [SPEAKER_02]: I also feel like Alice and Roman
[01:25:28] [SPEAKER_02]: is a bit of a Julia child for millennials
[01:25:31] [SPEAKER_01]: that's a great analogy
[01:25:32] [SPEAKER_02]: it's true though, her books
[01:25:33] [SPEAKER_02]: she did get cancelled
[01:25:36] [SPEAKER_02]: during Covid
[01:25:37] [SPEAKER_02]: there's some incenses for marks
[01:25:38] [SPEAKER_02]: we're not unaware of that
[01:25:40] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't think she's unaware of that either
[01:25:42] [SPEAKER_02]: we're not here to be Alice and Roman apologists
[01:25:44] [SPEAKER_02]: we're here to just say that she knows how to cook a chicken
[01:25:46] [SPEAKER_02]: the food is tasty
[01:25:48] [SPEAKER_02]: so there's two chicken recipes we like
[01:25:51] [SPEAKER_02]: one is slow roasted chicken
[01:25:53] [SPEAKER_02]: over fennel tomatoes
[01:25:56] [SPEAKER_02]: but we've gone for
[01:25:57] [SPEAKER_02]: my personal favourite
[01:25:59] [SPEAKER_02]: I think tonight which is
[01:26:03] [SPEAKER_01]: anchovy butter
[01:26:04] [SPEAKER_01]: roasted chicken
[01:26:05] [SPEAKER_02]: sitting on a bed of
[01:26:08] [SPEAKER_01]: onions or shallots
[01:26:10] [SPEAKER_01]: if you have them
[01:26:10] [SPEAKER_02]: and also
[01:26:13] [SPEAKER_02]: you're looking at me blankly
[01:26:16] [SPEAKER_02]: croutons
[01:26:16] [SPEAKER_01]: yes, because you're sitting on a bed of
[01:26:19] [SPEAKER_02]: oh do you make the croutons?
[01:26:21] [SPEAKER_02]: you make the croutons after
[01:26:22] [SPEAKER_02]: they're the best bit
[01:26:24] [SPEAKER_02]: the little chicken fat soaked bits of bread are just
[01:26:28] [SPEAKER_01]: this is the payoff
[01:26:30] [SPEAKER_01]: after we have cooked
[01:26:32] [SPEAKER_01]: our chicken on its bed of onions
[01:26:34] [SPEAKER_01]: in the anchovies and the butter
[01:26:36] [SPEAKER_01]: we're going to end up with this incredible fat
[01:26:38] [SPEAKER_01]: which in other circumstances
[01:26:40] [SPEAKER_01]: you would probably then cook down into a gravy
[01:26:43] [SPEAKER_01]: but nope, what we are going to do
[01:26:44] [SPEAKER_01]: is we're going to cut lots of cubes
[01:26:46] [SPEAKER_01]: of bread, we're going to soak
[01:26:48] [SPEAKER_01]: them in all of that fat
[01:26:50] [SPEAKER_01]: we're going to roast that to make
[01:26:52] [SPEAKER_01]: possibly the best croutons that you will ever experience
[01:26:55] [SPEAKER_02]: yes, we had a very nice dinner
[01:26:56] [SPEAKER_02]: round about your 40th birthday with our friends Diana and David
[01:26:59] [SPEAKER_02]: and we converted them to the ways
[01:27:01] [SPEAKER_02]: of the anchovy chicken
[01:27:04] [SPEAKER_02]: we're also huge
[01:27:05] [SPEAKER_02]: anchovy household
[01:27:07] [SPEAKER_02]: there's a food shop near us
[01:27:09] [SPEAKER_02]: that does this beautiful jar
[01:27:11] [SPEAKER_02]: of colabrian anchovies
[01:27:13] [SPEAKER_02]: it's like chalk filled
[01:27:14] [SPEAKER_02]: and they're nice little fat ones
[01:27:16] [SPEAKER_02]: although the jar is about 8 quid so it's not cheap
[01:27:18] [SPEAKER_02]: it's a huge jar and it lasts us for about 2 months
[01:27:21] [SPEAKER_02]: well the anchovy goes a long way
[01:27:22] [SPEAKER_02]: right, okay I'm bored now
[01:27:25] [SPEAKER_02]: let's say it was chicken out
[01:27:26] [SPEAKER_01]: this very long digression, all to say
[01:27:28] [SPEAKER_01]: we're going to try two techniques
[01:27:29] [SPEAKER_01]: that we've not tried before
[01:27:31] [SPEAKER_01]: we've learned about from the bear
[01:27:32] [SPEAKER_01]: and we're now going to copy them from masterclass
[01:27:34] [SPEAKER_01]: and we are going to see if those
[01:27:37] [SPEAKER_01]: elevate the chicken
[01:27:38] [SPEAKER_01]: in order to do that
[01:27:41] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to make a confession which is
[01:27:43] [SPEAKER_01]: that you're first going to hear me untrust the chicken
[01:27:45] [SPEAKER_01]: because it's come pre-trust
[01:27:47] [SPEAKER_01]: it has come pre-trust
[01:27:50] [SPEAKER_01]: so we're going to make that confession
[01:27:51] [SPEAKER_01]: just to show how open we are being with you listeners
[01:27:54] [SPEAKER_01]: also
[01:27:54] [SPEAKER_01]: and then we're going to re-trust it
[01:27:57] [SPEAKER_01]: making it slightly worse trust
[01:27:59] [SPEAKER_01]: because I'm sure the butcher did a much better job than I am
[01:28:01] [SPEAKER_02]: two questions
[01:28:02] [SPEAKER_02]: first is a practical one, where is the twine
[01:28:04] [SPEAKER_01]: it's in this your mind
[01:28:06] [SPEAKER_02]: and second question, what does trusting do
[01:28:08] [SPEAKER_02]: and why do we not usually do it
[01:28:10] [SPEAKER_02]: if left to our own devices
[01:28:12] [SPEAKER_01]: so
[01:28:14] [SPEAKER_01]: we don't do it mostly because we're lazy
[01:28:17] [SPEAKER_01]: is the honest truth
[01:28:19] [SPEAKER_02]: why would one do it
[01:28:20] [SPEAKER_01]: one would do it
[01:28:22] [SPEAKER_01]: according to Thomas Keller
[01:28:24] [SPEAKER_01]: because we are going to create
[01:28:27] [SPEAKER_01]: a much more evenly
[01:28:29] [SPEAKER_01]: evenly cooked
[01:28:31] [SPEAKER_01]: chicken
[01:28:32] [SPEAKER_02]: okay
[01:28:33] [SPEAKER_01]: so
[01:28:35] [SPEAKER_01]: and I suppose this is relevant to the show in a way
[01:28:37] [SPEAKER_01]: because you and I would honestly
[01:28:39] [SPEAKER_01]: probably just bung the chicken in the oven
[01:28:41] [SPEAKER_01]: and
[01:28:42] [SPEAKER_01]: let nature have its way
[01:28:46] [SPEAKER_01]: now
[01:28:47] [SPEAKER_01]: if you're carmy and you're Thomas Keller
[01:28:50] [SPEAKER_01]: you're wanting to achieve something
[01:28:51] [SPEAKER_01]: that's much more aesthetically pleasing
[01:28:53] [SPEAKER_01]: and you're wanting to achieve
[01:28:56] [SPEAKER_01]: something that's uniform and consistent
[01:28:57] [SPEAKER_01]: trusting is all about getting us to that point
[01:28:59] [SPEAKER_02]: will it be juicier if it's trust
[01:29:01] [SPEAKER_02]: because it's less open
[01:29:04] [SPEAKER_01]: yes and no
[01:29:05] [SPEAKER_02]: oh interesting
[01:29:07] [SPEAKER_01]: because it's going to be more even
[01:29:08] [SPEAKER_01]: so hopefully
[01:29:11] [SPEAKER_01]: no single part of the chicken is going to be
[01:29:14] [SPEAKER_01]: significantly over or undercooked
[01:29:15] [SPEAKER_01]: compared with other parts
[01:29:16] [SPEAKER_02]: excellent
[01:29:18] [SPEAKER_02]: alright let's do this
[01:29:19] [SPEAKER_02]: some exciting audio here of you
[01:29:21] [SPEAKER_02]: opening some plastic packaging
[01:29:22] [SPEAKER_02]: I should say for those listeners who enjoy hearing our cat
[01:29:25] [SPEAKER_02]: on the podcast she's about to go crazy
[01:29:28] [SPEAKER_02]: because I think her favourite thing in the world
[01:29:30] [SPEAKER_02]: is raw chicken
[01:29:30] [SPEAKER_02]: which I should say I
[01:29:33] [SPEAKER_02]: as a good cat mother did not let her have
[01:29:35] [SPEAKER_02]: for the first three years of her life
[01:29:37] [SPEAKER_01]: and as a much better cat father
[01:29:39] [SPEAKER_01]: I did
[01:29:41] [SPEAKER_02]: so now she does the kind of crazy eyes
[01:29:43] [SPEAKER_02]: where they turn into
[01:29:45] [SPEAKER_02]: full black little circles
[01:29:47] [SPEAKER_02]: alright so the chicken's coming out damn this looks good
[01:29:50] [SPEAKER_02]: the other thing
[01:29:51] [SPEAKER_02]: that the chicken knife allows us to do
[01:29:53] [SPEAKER_02]: which is quite a good tip if you're either cooking for yourself
[01:29:55] [SPEAKER_02]: or just two of you
[01:29:58] [SPEAKER_02]: you can half a chicken
[01:29:59] [SPEAKER_02]: we're not going to do that today because we're going to do the full
[01:30:01] [SPEAKER_02]: kind of truss
[01:30:03] [SPEAKER_02]: but generally speaking
[01:30:06] [SPEAKER_02]: it's quite useful
[01:30:07] [SPEAKER_02]: because we tend not to unless we've made
[01:30:09] [SPEAKER_02]: specific plans
[01:30:11] [SPEAKER_02]: a little bit of chicken tends to get wasted throughout the week
[01:30:14] [SPEAKER_02]: if we
[01:30:14] [SPEAKER_02]: you know if we cook a whole one
[01:30:16] [SPEAKER_02]: not so much this week because we've got plans
[01:30:19] [SPEAKER_02]: but halving the chicken means it cooks quicker
[01:30:21] [SPEAKER_02]: and
[01:30:23] [SPEAKER_02]: we waste less
[01:30:24] [SPEAKER_01]: it's not that hard it's a bit
[01:30:25] [SPEAKER_01]: it's a little bit grisly I would say as an activity
[01:30:28] [SPEAKER_01]: but it's not that hard
[01:30:29] [SPEAKER_02]: you love it you live for that
[01:30:31] [SPEAKER_02]: why did you buy a chicken knife if you don't like doing that
[01:30:34] [SPEAKER_01]: the chicken knife is made for much dainty
[01:30:36] [SPEAKER_02]: activities are we getting that background audio here
[01:30:38] [SPEAKER_01]: hey Molly how are you
[01:30:41] [SPEAKER_02]: oh it's my favourite
[01:30:42] [SPEAKER_02]: okay talk to me about what you're doing
[01:30:44] [SPEAKER_01]: so step one of this
[01:30:46] [SPEAKER_01]: Lucy if you could scroll down to the bottom of the page
[01:30:48] [SPEAKER_01]: because we will refer to the instructions as we do this
[01:30:50] [SPEAKER_01]: right joe
[01:30:54] [SPEAKER_02]: first step
[01:30:55] [SPEAKER_01]: so you'll remember from the show that the first step
[01:30:58] [SPEAKER_01]: is we see Thomas Keller explaining
[01:31:00] [SPEAKER_01]: to Karmie
[01:31:01] [SPEAKER_01]: that he's going to scrape
[01:31:04] [SPEAKER_01]: against the wishbone
[01:31:05] [SPEAKER_01]: with the same kind of sound that you get at the dentist
[01:31:07] [SPEAKER_01]: so that's what we're going to listen to
[01:31:10] [SPEAKER_01]: and because this is an audio medium
[01:31:11] [SPEAKER_01]: we might even get that
[01:31:12] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to try and lean in as much as I hate raw chicken
[01:31:15] [SPEAKER_02]: right let's do this
[01:31:27] [SPEAKER_02]: I think that's whatever the opposite of ASMR is
[01:31:30] [SPEAKER_02]: like that's nightmare for her
[01:31:33] [SPEAKER_02]: Molly enjoys it
[01:31:34] [SPEAKER_02]: she's like oh yes this is the sound of my dreams
[01:31:48] [SPEAKER_02]: talk to me about what you're seeing
[01:31:51] [SPEAKER_01]: so we have
[01:31:53] [SPEAKER_01]: we have exposed one half of the wishbone
[01:31:55] [SPEAKER_01]: cool
[01:31:57] [SPEAKER_01]: we're now going to switch to the side
[01:31:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Lucy and I are both fascinated to see
[01:32:02] [SPEAKER_01]: how this audio actually comes out
[01:32:04] [SPEAKER_01]: because of course it doesn't sound quite like it does
[01:32:06] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah
[01:32:07] [SPEAKER_01]: so as in real life
[01:32:08] [SPEAKER_01]: I think we're both super curious to find out if we could just make the most horrible audio recording
[01:32:17] [SPEAKER_02]: so many people
[01:32:18] [SPEAKER_02]: are pulled over in their cars like no
[01:32:21] [SPEAKER_02]: I think what really adds to it
[01:32:23] [SPEAKER_02]: is the really chirpy cat in the background
[01:32:24] [SPEAKER_02]: like meow
[01:32:29] [SPEAKER_02]: oh what's happening now
[01:32:31] [SPEAKER_01]: so
[01:32:32] [SPEAKER_01]: step two
[01:32:33] [SPEAKER_01]: we're going to slide our thumb
[01:32:36] [SPEAKER_01]: and index finger up to the tip
[01:32:38] [SPEAKER_01]: where the wishbone meets the breastplate
[01:32:40] [SPEAKER_01]: we're going to snap the wishbone loose
[01:32:44] [SPEAKER_01]: so that will presumably make for some audio as well
[01:32:49] [SPEAKER_01]: okay
[01:32:50] [SPEAKER_01]: and we're going to gently peel it out
[01:32:52] [SPEAKER_02]: holy moly
[01:32:53] [SPEAKER_02]: and there it is
[01:32:56] [SPEAKER_02]: wishbone
[01:32:57] [SPEAKER_02]: excellent
[01:32:59] [SPEAKER_02]: now are we gonna dry out the wishbone
[01:33:01] [SPEAKER_01]: yes well
[01:33:02] [SPEAKER_01]: that was another feature of the show wasn't it
[01:33:04] [SPEAKER_01]: it's not in the masterclass
[01:33:06] [SPEAKER_01]: but it's kind of just a cute little thing so we'll do it
[01:33:09] [SPEAKER_02]: how are we going to do this without
[01:33:10] [SPEAKER_02]: this tiny cat losing our mind actually
[01:33:12] [SPEAKER_02]: let's do some live cat molly how do you feel about what just happened
[01:33:18] [SPEAKER_02]: you know she never meows
[01:33:19] [SPEAKER_02]: into the mic
[01:33:22] [SPEAKER_02]: she's so good at meowing off mic
[01:33:23] [SPEAKER_02]: apart from when we actually need her to
[01:33:25] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah
[01:33:27] [SPEAKER_02]: well that looked really flipping cool if I'm honest
[01:33:29] [SPEAKER_02]: so what are we doing now
[01:33:31] [SPEAKER_01]: so the front of the chicken is just
[01:33:34] [SPEAKER_01]: kind of less supported than it used to be
[01:33:36] [SPEAKER_02]: we removed the underwire
[01:33:38] [SPEAKER_02]: from the chicken breasts
[01:33:40] [SPEAKER_01]: you know I've never thought of it that way
[01:33:41] [SPEAKER_01]: but I think you're right I think the wishbone is the underwire
[01:33:44] [SPEAKER_01]: of the chicken
[01:33:45] [SPEAKER_02]: so we're now following I've got the joy
[01:33:47] [SPEAKER_02]: of Peter's hands are pretty chickeny so I'm
[01:33:49] [SPEAKER_02]: scrolling down a page on his laptop
[01:33:52] [SPEAKER_02]: of a visual
[01:33:53] [SPEAKER_02]: blow-by-blow of how to truss a chicken
[01:33:58] [SPEAKER_01]: so we hear about the Pope's nose
[01:34:00] [SPEAKER_01]: in the show
[01:34:01] [SPEAKER_02]: can I be a pedantic about something
[01:34:04] [SPEAKER_02]: I think he named the wrong King James
[01:34:07] [SPEAKER_01]: I wondered about that
[01:34:08] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah I think he said King James the third and I'm not convinced
[01:34:10] [SPEAKER_02]: that's the right James but I've done no research
[01:34:12] [SPEAKER_02]: so anyway that's the Pope's nose
[01:34:14] [SPEAKER_01]: okay so step one
[01:34:16] [SPEAKER_01]: we're under the Pope's nose
[01:34:17] [SPEAKER_01]: step two we are going
[01:34:21] [SPEAKER_01]: to cross
[01:34:22] [SPEAKER_01]: the twine
[01:34:26] [SPEAKER_01]: over the over the leg joints
[01:34:29] [SPEAKER_01]: okay
[01:34:30] [SPEAKER_02]: I think you might go a bit further under the nose
[01:34:33] [SPEAKER_02]: you're in danger of falling off there yeah
[01:34:36] [SPEAKER_01]: there we go
[01:34:39] [SPEAKER_02]: okay it's a Voldemort situation
[01:34:42] [SPEAKER_02]: right step three
[01:34:43] [SPEAKER_01]: okay to slide the twine
[01:34:47] [SPEAKER_01]: under the legs
[01:34:50] [SPEAKER_01]: okay under the legs
[01:34:51] [SPEAKER_01]: and I think it comes back around if you could slide down to
[01:34:54] [SPEAKER_02]: and now you're sliding
[01:34:59] [SPEAKER_02]: did you ever read Bridget Jones's diary
[01:35:02] [SPEAKER_02]: there's a scene where she uses
[01:35:03] [SPEAKER_02]: blue string to do this and she makes a blue
[01:35:05] [SPEAKER_02]: soup by accident
[01:35:06] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah our twine is not blue
[01:35:09] [SPEAKER_02]: just for the record
[01:35:12] [SPEAKER_01]: okay
[01:35:13] [SPEAKER_02]: when you pull back the leg should nestle towards the breast
[01:35:16] [SPEAKER_02]: side in a tidy package
[01:35:18] [SPEAKER_01]: I think they're doing that
[01:35:19] [SPEAKER_01]: step five back towards yourself
[01:35:24] [SPEAKER_01]: in a motion parallel with the wing tips
[01:35:26] [SPEAKER_02]: okay using your thumbs pull the breast
[01:35:36] [SPEAKER_02]: skin down towards the cavity
[01:35:37] [SPEAKER_02]: make sure the skin is
[01:35:40] [SPEAKER_02]: smooth and taut
[01:35:41] [SPEAKER_01]: it's pretty smooth and taut to me
[01:35:45] [SPEAKER_02]: now we're wrapping the twine through
[01:35:47] [SPEAKER_02]: where the centre
[01:35:48] [SPEAKER_02]: where the neck is cut that's badly written on the website
[01:35:51] [SPEAKER_03]: yep
[01:35:55] [SPEAKER_02]: did you get your knotting badge in scouts
[01:35:58] [SPEAKER_02]: make a slip knot
[01:35:59] [SPEAKER_02]: pull the ends
[01:36:01] [SPEAKER_02]: I actually do
[01:36:03] [SPEAKER_03]: do you actually know how to make a slip knot
[01:36:05] [SPEAKER_02]: not enough that I'm willing to step in and try here
[01:36:07] [SPEAKER_02]: but I did get my knotting badge level two
[01:36:09] [SPEAKER_02]: in the girl guides so
[01:36:12] [SPEAKER_02]: put that on my CV
[01:36:15] [SPEAKER_02]: I think you can just do a normal knot
[01:36:17] [SPEAKER_02]: just do like a shoelace one
[01:36:18] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah I think it's fine
[01:36:21] [SPEAKER_02]: yes the cat is watching so
[01:36:23] [SPEAKER_02]: intently right now
[01:36:25] [SPEAKER_02]: she's hopped up onto the far side of the counter
[01:36:26] [SPEAKER_02]: neither of us can move away from the microphone to get her down
[01:36:29] [SPEAKER_02]: and she's just staring
[01:36:30] [SPEAKER_01]: could I tell you
[01:36:32] [SPEAKER_01]: food hygiene fans there
[01:36:35] [SPEAKER_02]: okay I think we're trust
[01:36:38] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean it is neat
[01:36:41] [SPEAKER_02]: so we're gonna report back after we've cooked
[01:36:43] [SPEAKER_02]: the chicken on moisture levels
[01:36:45] [SPEAKER_02]: and whatnot
[01:36:46] [SPEAKER_02]: alright good job chef
[01:36:48] [SPEAKER_01]: thanks chef
[01:36:49] [SPEAKER_02]: how was your chicken
[01:36:54] [SPEAKER_01]: it was really good
[01:36:56] [SPEAKER_01]: we
[01:36:58] [SPEAKER_01]: as listeners will have heard
[01:36:59] [SPEAKER_01]: we were making a recipe
[01:37:02] [SPEAKER_01]: that we've been making for a while
[01:37:05] [SPEAKER_01]: but
[01:37:06] [SPEAKER_01]: we decided to
[01:37:09] [SPEAKER_01]: try the
[01:37:10] [SPEAKER_01]: exercise of
[01:37:12] [SPEAKER_01]: removing the wishbone
[01:37:14] [SPEAKER_01]: and
[01:37:15] [SPEAKER_01]: trusting it
[01:37:16] [SPEAKER_01]: and I think the thing that everyone will have been waiting to hear
[01:37:20] [SPEAKER_01]: is
[01:37:22] [SPEAKER_01]: when we snapped the wishbone
[01:37:23] [SPEAKER_01]: who won? I won
[01:37:25] [SPEAKER_02]: of course you won but I did drop it under the fridge
[01:37:27] [SPEAKER_02]: before winning
[01:37:28] [SPEAKER_02]: so it was a peric victory
[01:37:30] [SPEAKER_02]: do you feel that trusting the chicken had an impact
[01:37:34] [SPEAKER_02]: on the taste or flavour
[01:37:37] [SPEAKER_01]: it was neater
[01:37:38] [SPEAKER_01]: and I think that
[01:37:41] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if I could
[01:37:46] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if I could pin it down
[01:37:47] [SPEAKER_01]: if I'm very honest
[01:37:50] [SPEAKER_04]: that's fair
[01:37:51] [SPEAKER_01]: I think it felt quite nice
[01:37:53] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not convinced I quite got it right
[01:37:56] [SPEAKER_01]: when I went back
[01:37:57] [SPEAKER_01]: and watched the episode
[01:38:00] [SPEAKER_01]: not everything was exactly where it was meant to be
[01:38:03] [SPEAKER_01]: I think most things were
[01:38:04] [SPEAKER_01]: but my job was not as neat as
[01:38:07] [SPEAKER_01]: Karmie's or
[01:38:08] [SPEAKER_01]: fictional Thomas Keller's
[01:38:09] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean it was real Thomas Keller
[01:38:11] [SPEAKER_01]: it was real Thomas Keller
[01:38:12] [SPEAKER_01]: was he playing real Thomas Keller
[01:38:15] [SPEAKER_02]: obviously Adam Shapiro question all over again
[01:38:17] [SPEAKER_01]: and yeah it's actually something I'll come back to
[01:38:20] [SPEAKER_01]: when we're talking about the episode
[01:38:21] [SPEAKER_01]: because I have some thoughts and some commentary about that
[01:38:23] [SPEAKER_02]: we've already done that by the time this bit is airing
[01:38:28] [SPEAKER_01]: have we burst the
[01:38:29] [SPEAKER_01]: ball have we revealed behind
[01:38:31] [SPEAKER_01]: the curtain here
[01:38:33] [SPEAKER_02]: yes we have
[01:38:34] [SPEAKER_02]: I think what was interesting for me was the chicken was definitely more moist
[01:38:38] [SPEAKER_02]: good
[01:38:39] [SPEAKER_02]: which was really nice
[01:38:41] [SPEAKER_02]: we cooked a full chicken rather than a half chicken
[01:38:43] [SPEAKER_02]: so that was also good
[01:38:44] [SPEAKER_02]: the cats have had a really nice week of having their food
[01:38:47] [SPEAKER_02]: peppered with some roast chicken bits
[01:38:49] [SPEAKER_02]: so that's been cheering them up
[01:38:51] [SPEAKER_02]: no end they've enjoyed that
[01:38:52] [SPEAKER_02]: they've really enjoyed that
[01:38:54] [SPEAKER_02]: something we did that was different
[01:38:57] [SPEAKER_02]: was we used the leftovers
[01:38:58] [SPEAKER_02]: for a white chicken chili
[01:39:00] [SPEAKER_02]: which is the first time making that recipe for me
[01:39:03] [SPEAKER_02]: and I think the moist chicken
[01:39:04] [SPEAKER_02]: really paid off for that
[01:39:06] [SPEAKER_01]: that was a good
[01:39:07] [SPEAKER_01]: no prior experience of a white chicken chili at all
[01:39:10] [SPEAKER_01]: and I really enjoyed that actually
[01:39:12] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah I'm going to share the link in the show notes we used
[01:39:14] [SPEAKER_02]: in NYT Cooking recipe
[01:39:17] [SPEAKER_02]: there's an amazing soup fan
[01:39:18] [SPEAKER_02]: or there was an amazing soup fan
[01:39:20] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if it exists anymore at the University of Edinburgh
[01:39:22] [SPEAKER_02]: in the main square
[01:39:24] [SPEAKER_02]: called Union of Genius
[01:39:25] [SPEAKER_02]: and they were famous for their vegan chili
[01:39:27] [SPEAKER_02]: which was very good
[01:39:29] [SPEAKER_02]: made primarily with quinoa and bulgur wheat
[01:39:31] [SPEAKER_02]: which sounds like it wouldn't be good but it was actually delicious
[01:39:33] [SPEAKER_02]: but they introduced a few years back
[01:39:36] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean a few years back
[01:39:37] [SPEAKER_02]: this is when I was still doing my PhDs
[01:39:38] [SPEAKER_02]: many years ago
[01:39:40] [SPEAKER_02]: during my youth
[01:39:42] [SPEAKER_02]: a white chicken chili and it was so good
[01:39:45] [SPEAKER_02]: and I always wanted to recreate it
[01:39:46] [SPEAKER_02]: and I think we did a pretty good job
[01:39:48] [SPEAKER_01]: do you feel like you got the
[01:39:50] [SPEAKER_01]: the main qualities of it?
[01:39:53] [SPEAKER_02]: I think so
[01:39:54] [SPEAKER_02]: it was a bit weird we didn't have
[01:39:56] [SPEAKER_02]: something that you can't get as easily in the UK
[01:39:58] [SPEAKER_02]: without going to specialist delis
[01:40:00] [SPEAKER_02]: there are things like
[01:40:02] [SPEAKER_02]: tinned and jarred
[01:40:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Mexican
[01:40:04] [SPEAKER_02]: cuisine ingredients like
[01:40:08] [SPEAKER_02]: tomatillos
[01:40:09] [SPEAKER_02]: jalapenos can be harder to get
[01:40:11] [SPEAKER_02]: and this recipe called for two small tins
[01:40:14] [SPEAKER_02]: of green chilies
[01:40:15] [SPEAKER_02]: so we used fresh green chili
[01:40:17] [SPEAKER_02]: and I found
[01:40:18] [SPEAKER_02]: a bottle of green salsa that we bought
[01:40:21] [SPEAKER_02]: the last time we were in a Mexican deli
[01:40:24] [SPEAKER_02]: I just poured that in
[01:40:25] [SPEAKER_02]: so I don't know what impact that had
[01:40:28] [SPEAKER_02]: and you did quite a nice thing with the corn
[01:40:32] [SPEAKER_01]: we found some fresh corn
[01:40:33] [SPEAKER_01]: rather than buying tinsuit corn
[01:40:36] [SPEAKER_01]: which was quite nice
[01:40:36] [SPEAKER_01]: something we don't come by very much
[01:40:39] [SPEAKER_01]: much less so
[01:40:41] [SPEAKER_02]: all in all I would say the trussing was a success
[01:40:43] [SPEAKER_02]: the very moist chicken lent itself nicely to leftovers
[01:40:46] [SPEAKER_02]: and we've had a pretty good chickeny week
[01:40:48] [SPEAKER_02]: and the cats have approved
[01:40:50] [SPEAKER_01]: that thump that Lucy
[01:40:52] [SPEAKER_01]: and I will probably have been unable to edit out of the audio
[01:40:56] [SPEAKER_01]: was one of our cats jumping onto the table
[01:40:58] [SPEAKER_01]: into the
[01:41:00] [SPEAKER_01]: spaghetti of cables
[01:41:01] [SPEAKER_01]: we have sat around us right now
[01:41:02] [SPEAKER_02]: bump her wee face against the mic to tell us that she liked the chicken
[01:41:06] [SPEAKER_02]: although she got it for breakfast on Monday
[01:41:08] [SPEAKER_02]: and she was not convinced
[01:41:09] [SPEAKER_02]: she was like this isn't breakfast food
[01:41:12] [SPEAKER_02]: you eat the same food for every meal
[01:41:14] [SPEAKER_02]: why are you bothered
[01:41:16] [SPEAKER_02]: literally every meal is a disgusting meat pouch
[01:41:18] [SPEAKER_02]: like what do you want
[01:41:19] [SPEAKER_02]: anyway so yeah it was good
[01:41:22] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm looking forward to more
[01:41:23] [SPEAKER_02]: kitchen adventures in the coming weeks
[01:41:25] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah alright
[01:41:27] [SPEAKER_02]: let's edit this bit back in
[01:41:29] [SPEAKER_02]: so in news about the bear
[01:41:32] [SPEAKER_02]: there's nothing kind of
[01:41:34] [SPEAKER_02]: outstanding in terms of any recent developments
[01:41:36] [SPEAKER_02]: but there were three articles that I really liked
[01:41:38] [SPEAKER_02]: that I'm going to link to
[01:41:39] [SPEAKER_02]: one is from CBR
[01:41:41] [SPEAKER_02]: by Eric Banks
[01:41:43] [SPEAKER_02]: and it's entitled one of this decade's best
[01:41:45] [SPEAKER_02]: actors steals every scene in this hit show
[01:41:48] [SPEAKER_02]: who is he talking about
[01:41:50] [SPEAKER_01]: well I can see the URL here
[01:41:52] [SPEAKER_01]: so I'm going to guess
[01:41:54] [SPEAKER_01]: that it's John Berndtall
[01:41:55] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah baby, Johnny Berndtall
[01:41:57] [SPEAKER_02]: and he is great
[01:41:58] [SPEAKER_01]: and I think it's probably appropriate
[01:42:02] [SPEAKER_01]: to approach it that way
[01:42:05] [SPEAKER_01]: because in this season
[01:42:07] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think
[01:42:09] [SPEAKER_01]: it's quite the same for Jamie Leakart as she gets
[01:42:12] [SPEAKER_01]: an episode where
[01:42:14] [SPEAKER_01]: she is as much the star
[01:42:17] [SPEAKER_01]: as Abby Elliott is
[01:42:21] [SPEAKER_01]: whereas John Berndtall is
[01:42:23] [SPEAKER_01]: popping up here and there all the time
[01:42:25] [SPEAKER_01]: and yeah he is scene stealing
[01:42:26] [SPEAKER_01]: whenever he's there because he's so good
[01:42:28] [SPEAKER_02]: I think I want him to get the Emmy
[01:42:30] [SPEAKER_02]: for fishes
[01:42:32] [SPEAKER_01]: it would be very well deserved
[01:42:34] [SPEAKER_02]: it would be very well deserved
[01:42:36] [SPEAKER_02]: an article that I really enjoyed
[01:42:38] [SPEAKER_02]: from the English version of
[01:42:40] [SPEAKER_02]: El Pais, the Spanish newspaper
[01:42:42] [SPEAKER_02]: is an interview with Lisa Colón-Zayas
[01:42:46] [SPEAKER_02]: and she is quite outspoken that the backbone
[01:42:48] [SPEAKER_02]: of the United States has always been black
[01:42:50] [SPEAKER_02]: and brown people and she comes out strong
[01:42:52] [SPEAKER_02]: for Kamala Harris
[01:42:54] [SPEAKER_02]: and talks about her experience
[01:42:56] [SPEAKER_02]: of her life
[01:42:58] [SPEAKER_02]: in America
[01:42:59] [SPEAKER_02]: the people that she feels that she represents
[01:43:02] [SPEAKER_02]: and she says
[01:43:04] [SPEAKER_02]: the backbone of America has always been black and brown
[01:43:06] [SPEAKER_02]: people they are the indigenous people
[01:43:08] [SPEAKER_02]: African slaves built this country
[01:43:10] [SPEAKER_02]: and so we are at a point in our existence
[01:43:12] [SPEAKER_02]: where all of that history is being bander denied
[01:43:14] [SPEAKER_02]: we raise their children, we cook their meals
[01:43:16] [SPEAKER_02]: we farm their fields, we do it all
[01:43:18] [SPEAKER_02]: I think people like Tina are the backbone
[01:43:20] [SPEAKER_02]: of this country
[01:43:22] [SPEAKER_02]: and not to get too political
[01:43:23] [SPEAKER_02]: but I was really pleased to see someone
[01:43:26] [SPEAKER_02]: like Lisa Colón-Zayas speaking out
[01:43:28] [SPEAKER_02]: and getting on board with
[01:43:30] [SPEAKER_02]: the wave that seems to be
[01:43:32] [SPEAKER_02]: sweeping America at the moment
[01:43:34] [SPEAKER_02]: which is quite exciting
[01:43:35] [SPEAKER_02]: so go to link to that in the show notes
[01:43:37] [SPEAKER_02]: and I mentioned earlier
[01:43:38] [SPEAKER_02]: really good piece with Saizia Rankin
[01:43:40] [SPEAKER_02]: chatting with Gillian Jacobs about Tiffany's past lives
[01:43:43] [SPEAKER_02]: moment and the significance
[01:43:46] [SPEAKER_02]: of Taylor Swift in the Richie
[01:43:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Teff's storyline
[01:43:51] [SPEAKER_02]: we were lucky to receive some listener feedback
[01:43:53] [SPEAKER_02]: we have two messages and a voice
[01:43:56] [SPEAKER_02]: no, Peter would you like to go first with
[01:43:58] [SPEAKER_02]: the listener responses?
[01:43:59] [SPEAKER_01]: I would love to so first up we have
[01:44:02] [SPEAKER_01]: Sam Loh
[01:44:02] [SPEAKER_01]: hi Sam
[01:44:06] [SPEAKER_01]: I binged all three seasons at once
[01:44:07] [SPEAKER_01]: OFT intense but fun
[01:44:09] [SPEAKER_01]: for me this was the weakest season finale
[01:44:12] [SPEAKER_01]: of this series so far
[01:44:13] [SPEAKER_01]: I agree with you Sam
[01:44:14] [SPEAKER_01]: it was still very good with highlights by
[01:44:17] [SPEAKER_01]: Marcus, Tina, Sid and Luca
[01:44:19] [SPEAKER_01]: it felt anticlimactic
[01:44:21] [SPEAKER_01]: with my favourite episodes being
[01:44:23] [SPEAKER_01]: Marcus's showcase and the chaos of episode 2
[01:44:27] [SPEAKER_01]: I agree with Lucy that Karmie's mental health
[01:44:29] [SPEAKER_01]: is becoming more and more concerning
[01:44:31] [SPEAKER_01]: his confrontation with his old
[01:44:33] [SPEAKER_01]: abusive boss was hard to watch
[01:44:35] [SPEAKER_01]: I would never recommend
[01:44:36] [SPEAKER_01]: I would recommend never confronting
[01:44:39] [SPEAKER_01]: someone who has harmed you with any expectation
[01:44:41] [SPEAKER_01]: of their behaviour
[01:44:43] [SPEAKER_01]: just because we grow it doesn't mean
[01:44:45] [SPEAKER_01]: others have or are willing to
[01:44:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Karmie was shut down in a fairly devastating
[01:44:49] [SPEAKER_01]: way that I'm concerned will only
[01:44:51] [SPEAKER_01]: add to self destructive cycle
[01:44:54] [SPEAKER_01]: I had just said
[01:44:55] [SPEAKER_01]: that the facts were my season 3
[01:44:57] [SPEAKER_01]: MVP but boys
[01:44:59] [SPEAKER_01]: stop making clear happen
[01:45:02] [SPEAKER_01]: her character
[01:45:03] [SPEAKER_01]: was a nice addition but I feel like
[01:45:05] [SPEAKER_01]: her story has played itself out at least for now
[01:45:07] [SPEAKER_01]: shows can get side tracked
[01:45:09] [SPEAKER_01]: with romances that detract rather than
[01:45:11] [SPEAKER_01]: add to the growth of the plot
[01:45:13] [SPEAKER_01]: at least for me
[01:45:14] [SPEAKER_01]: I like the found family of the bear
[01:45:16] [SPEAKER_01]: and the explorations between those characters
[01:45:19] [SPEAKER_01]: in their history
[01:45:20] [SPEAKER_01]: the season's big question
[01:45:21] [SPEAKER_01]: what do you guys think the review says
[01:45:24] [SPEAKER_01]: oh that is a good question
[01:45:26] [SPEAKER_01]: we'll come back to that once we've finished
[01:45:29] [SPEAKER_01]: thank you so much for doing this
[01:45:31] [SPEAKER_01]: I can only imagine how busy you are
[01:45:33] [SPEAKER_01]: the selfish side of me would definitely
[01:45:35] [SPEAKER_01]: love season 1 and 2 recap
[01:45:37] [SPEAKER_01]: by our talented scott
[01:45:39] [SPEAKER_01]: mollycat included
[01:45:41] [SPEAKER_02]: aww
[01:45:42] [SPEAKER_02]: that is so lovely thank you
[01:45:44] [SPEAKER_02]: we would love to do it
[01:45:45] [SPEAKER_01]: that's exactly the kind of positive reinforcement we need to
[01:45:49] [SPEAKER_01]: do good work
[01:45:50] [SPEAKER_02]: I think we would really like to do that
[01:45:52] [SPEAKER_02]: it's just a matter of figuring out how
[01:45:53] [SPEAKER_02]: and hopefully having a function in kitchen
[01:45:56] [SPEAKER_01]: we've definitely spoken about doing a recap
[01:45:58] [SPEAKER_01]: all season 1 and 2
[01:45:59] [SPEAKER_01]: I think it would be really fun
[01:46:01] [SPEAKER_01]: we would just have to get organised
[01:46:03] [SPEAKER_02]: and we'd love to get guests on for that
[01:46:05] [SPEAKER_02]: if we're doing a rewatch
[01:46:07] [SPEAKER_02]: I think this season's been hard for scheduling
[01:46:09] [SPEAKER_02]: even just us
[01:46:12] [SPEAKER_01]: we wake up in the same place
[01:46:14] [SPEAKER_01]: and go to bed in the same place
[01:46:15] [SPEAKER_01]: we know where each other are
[01:46:17] [SPEAKER_02]: there's people like Jim who I think would be really keen
[01:46:19] [SPEAKER_02]: to come on for an episode or two
[01:46:21] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah we'd love to do that
[01:46:22] [SPEAKER_02]: so once we get our chiseled together
[01:46:24] [SPEAKER_02]: I think that would be fantastic
[01:46:27] [SPEAKER_02]: in terms of what the review says
[01:46:28] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't think Karmie knows yet
[01:46:29] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't think he's opened the review
[01:46:32] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure he's definitely opened it
[01:46:34] [SPEAKER_02]: hasn't he?
[01:46:35] [SPEAKER_02]: It's an ambiguous mother fucker
[01:46:37] [SPEAKER_02]: but I think he's seen that the reviews come out
[01:46:39] [SPEAKER_02]: and he's seen the missed calls
[01:46:41] [SPEAKER_02]: and he's assuming
[01:46:43] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean
[01:46:45] [SPEAKER_01]: this is this point you were making
[01:46:48] [SPEAKER_01]: before about
[01:46:48] [SPEAKER_01]: we see so many fake reviews
[01:46:51] [SPEAKER_02]: oh we've been gaslit to hell
[01:46:54] [SPEAKER_01]: obviously everybody listening to this
[01:46:56] [SPEAKER_01]: knows that at the same point
[01:46:57] [SPEAKER_01]: that Karmie's having that reaction
[01:46:58] [SPEAKER_01]: we see various shots of
[01:47:00] [SPEAKER_01]: words more or less in isolation
[01:47:03] [SPEAKER_01]: the
[01:47:03] [SPEAKER_01]: words you would expect to be in a restaurant review
[01:47:06] [SPEAKER_01]: and I'm sure it's implied
[01:47:07] [SPEAKER_01]: but as ever
[01:47:08] [SPEAKER_01]: is it a real review?
[01:47:10] [SPEAKER_01]: it could be just as I think Lucy's implying
[01:47:12] [SPEAKER_01]: that he's imagining
[01:47:14] [SPEAKER_01]: what might be in the link
[01:47:16] [SPEAKER_01]: that he's presumably about to click on
[01:47:18] [SPEAKER_01]: personally I assumed
[01:47:20] [SPEAKER_01]: he was really seeing them
[01:47:24] [SPEAKER_01]: any of those words
[01:47:25] [SPEAKER_01]: can easily be read
[01:47:26] [SPEAKER_01]: in plenty of different contexts
[01:47:28] [SPEAKER_01]: or just imagine the word not in front of them
[01:47:30] [SPEAKER_01]: there's so much vagueness in there
[01:47:32] [SPEAKER_01]: but
[01:47:35] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah I
[01:47:36] [SPEAKER_02]: what if it's neither good nor bad?
[01:47:38] [SPEAKER_01]: I think that's where it's going to come down
[01:47:40] [SPEAKER_02]: it's not enough for Cicero to be like
[01:47:42] [SPEAKER_02]: oh money's out
[01:47:44] [SPEAKER_02]: this review says you're absolutely shit
[01:47:46] [SPEAKER_02]: and it's not enough for him to be like
[01:47:47] [SPEAKER_02]: this is the best financial decision I've ever made
[01:47:49] [SPEAKER_02]: it says you're the best
[01:47:50] [SPEAKER_02]: because life is like that isn't it?
[01:47:52] [SPEAKER_02]: it's neither good nor bad so
[01:47:53] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah so I think we are going to go for
[01:47:57] [SPEAKER_01]: next
[01:47:58] [SPEAKER_02]: I hope that would be my reading of it
[01:48:01] [SPEAKER_02]: thank you so much Sam it's been great having you
[01:48:03] [SPEAKER_02]: write in maybe you'd like to come on
[01:48:04] [SPEAKER_02]: and guest with us
[01:48:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Beth Nichols wrote in she says
[01:48:07] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm not caught up with the podcast on episode 5 just now
[01:48:10] [SPEAKER_02]: but what a finale episode
[01:48:11] [SPEAKER_02]: what I think is so amazing about this show
[01:48:13] [SPEAKER_02]: is the combination of writing, acting and pure cinematography
[01:48:16] [SPEAKER_02]: each episode is like a movie
[01:48:18] [SPEAKER_02]: the score is also on point
[01:48:20] [SPEAKER_02]: I can't stop listening to R.E.M.
[01:48:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Beth you're in my brain
[01:48:23] [SPEAKER_02]: like yes I'm listening to a lot of R.E.M at the moment
[01:48:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Beth goes on random thoughts
[01:48:27] [SPEAKER_02]: was anyone else expecting Karmie to hit the
[01:48:30] [SPEAKER_02]: nightmare chef that he confronted at the restaurant
[01:48:32] [SPEAKER_02]: yes
[01:48:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Olivia Coleman is a gem
[01:48:35] [SPEAKER_02]: she is you can come and live in Britain now Beth
[01:48:37] [SPEAKER_02]: if you don't already because that's on the
[01:48:39] [SPEAKER_02]: admission test as you have to admit that Olivia Coleman
[01:48:42] [SPEAKER_02]: is a gem
[01:48:42] [SPEAKER_02]: the tension was said making her decision as addictive
[01:48:45] [SPEAKER_02]: to watch I'm pretty sure she will decide to leave
[01:48:47] [SPEAKER_02]: for the other place I think that would be
[01:48:48] [SPEAKER_02]: the healthy decision which makes me worry that
[01:48:50] [SPEAKER_02]: she won't make it
[01:48:51] [SPEAKER_01]: if we are Ryan season 4
[01:48:55] [SPEAKER_01]: involves the bear closing
[01:48:56] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah it could all come together
[01:48:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Beth also says she's predicting
[01:49:01] [SPEAKER_02]: that the review will be positive
[01:49:02] [SPEAKER_02]: as someone who binged 3 series in about a week
[01:49:04] [SPEAKER_02]: we are responsible for so many people's
[01:49:06] [SPEAKER_02]: poor mental health now by being like
[01:49:08] [SPEAKER_02]: bing it guys you'll be fine
[01:49:09] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah Beth says I'm desperately hoping
[01:49:12] [SPEAKER_02]: we don't have to wait long for series 4
[01:49:13] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm very glad you're podcasting we definitely
[01:49:15] [SPEAKER_02]: listen to y'all do series 1 and 2
[01:49:17] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm already planning a rewatch I love your cooking segments too
[01:49:20] [SPEAKER_02]: thanks chefs oh Beth thank you
[01:49:22] [SPEAKER_02]: that's two votes thanks chef
[01:49:23] [SPEAKER_02]: that's great thanks chef
[01:49:25] [SPEAKER_02]: alright and we also have a voice note
[01:49:27] [SPEAKER_02]: from our friend Jenny in Saskatoon
[01:49:30] [SPEAKER_00]: hello Lucy and Peter and Jenny calling
[01:49:32] [SPEAKER_00]: from Saskatoon
[01:49:33] [SPEAKER_00]: just some observations
[01:49:35] [SPEAKER_00]: final observations about the series
[01:49:38] [SPEAKER_00]: and these specific episodes I guess
[01:49:40] [SPEAKER_00]: so I guess first of all
[01:49:42] [SPEAKER_00]: I've decided Claire is too
[01:49:44] [SPEAKER_00]: car me as Tara
[01:49:46] [SPEAKER_00]: is to Jack's on
[01:49:48] [SPEAKER_00]: Son of Anarchy
[01:49:49] [SPEAKER_00]: the
[01:49:51] [SPEAKER_00]: if the restaurant can be considered
[01:49:54] [SPEAKER_00]: a motorcycle club
[01:49:56] [SPEAKER_00]: the doctor
[01:49:57] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if you watched it or not
[01:49:59] [SPEAKER_00]: but she's good she just makes me think of that
[01:50:02] [SPEAKER_00]: dynamic if anyone knows what I'm talking about
[01:50:04] [SPEAKER_00]: you know
[01:50:06] [SPEAKER_00]: also I wanted to say that
[01:50:09] [SPEAKER_00]: I really like
[01:50:10] [SPEAKER_00]: listening to Maddie Matheson talk
[01:50:11] [SPEAKER_00]: because he sounds like my childhood
[01:50:13] [SPEAKER_00]: he sounds very much I think he's from
[01:50:15] [SPEAKER_00]: New Brunswick but he definitely
[01:50:17] [SPEAKER_00]: sounds Southern Ontario to me in some
[01:50:19] [SPEAKER_00]: of his parlance and it makes me
[01:50:21] [SPEAKER_00]: feel like home
[01:50:23] [SPEAKER_00]: also I'd like to know
[01:50:24] [SPEAKER_00]: why the music is so old if it wasn't
[01:50:27] [SPEAKER_00]: for smartphones I would think this was
[01:50:29] [SPEAKER_00]: set in the 90s
[01:50:30] [SPEAKER_00]: and also I really do believe
[01:50:33] [SPEAKER_00]: that car me if he were an animal
[01:50:35] [SPEAKER_00]: he would be yurtle the turtle
[01:50:38] [SPEAKER_00]: there's something very yurtly
[01:50:39] [SPEAKER_00]: about him
[01:50:41] [SPEAKER_00]: if you don't know where that is look him up
[01:50:45] [SPEAKER_00]: another thing
[01:50:45] [SPEAKER_00]: I wanted to say I know I'm not the only
[01:50:47] [SPEAKER_00]: person who has dated a car me
[01:50:49] [SPEAKER_00]: but it is impossible and
[01:50:51] [SPEAKER_00]: I feel a lot of I Claire needs to run
[01:50:53] [SPEAKER_00]: run far away
[01:50:54] [SPEAKER_00]: a tiny intense curly
[01:50:57] [SPEAKER_00]: haired
[01:50:59] [SPEAKER_00]: very tightly wound man
[01:51:01] [SPEAKER_00]: makes for a bad boyfriend
[01:51:03] [SPEAKER_00]: although the kissing is excellent
[01:51:06] [SPEAKER_00]: so
[01:51:07] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't have anything really to say about
[01:51:08] [SPEAKER_00]: episode 9 but episode 10
[01:51:11] [SPEAKER_00]: I was going to say
[01:51:13] [SPEAKER_00]: I thought it was really interesting how he started in the kitchen
[01:51:15] [SPEAKER_00]: and the chef
[01:51:16] [SPEAKER_00]: who's I guess a real chef
[01:51:18] [SPEAKER_00]: in the real world is talking about
[01:51:20] [SPEAKER_00]: why do cooks cook we cook to nurture
[01:51:22] [SPEAKER_00]: people
[01:51:24] [SPEAKER_00]: it's all about nurturing and I'm like car me
[01:51:26] [SPEAKER_00]: nurtures no one who is he nurturing
[01:51:29] [SPEAKER_00]: literally no one especially
[01:51:30] [SPEAKER_00]: the thrills of food in the garbage like literally no one
[01:51:34] [SPEAKER_00]: which is I guess
[01:51:35] [SPEAKER_00]: maybe why he's failing
[01:51:37] [SPEAKER_00]: also did anyone else notice
[01:51:39] [SPEAKER_00]: when they were flashing through
[01:51:41] [SPEAKER_00]: the cookbooks they're showing
[01:51:43] [SPEAKER_00]: like famous chefs and Bradley Cooper
[01:51:44] [SPEAKER_00]: flashed on the screen I think
[01:51:46] [SPEAKER_00]: I thought he was going to turn up as a chef at some point
[01:51:50] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know when the show became
[01:51:52] [SPEAKER_00]: a documentary about America's favorite
[01:51:55] [SPEAKER_00]: chefs because that whole
[01:51:56] [SPEAKER_00]: thing where all those people who I guess are real chefs
[01:52:00] [SPEAKER_00]: we're sitting around
[01:52:01] [SPEAKER_00]: talking about why they cook and their cooking
[01:52:02] [SPEAKER_00]: stories I was like I don't have time for this
[01:52:04] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't have time I won't even
[01:52:06] [SPEAKER_00]: know the baby's name
[01:52:08] [SPEAKER_00]: I want to know how Marcus is doing
[01:52:10] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to know but why these chefs
[01:52:12] [SPEAKER_00]: started cooking and I also
[01:52:15] [SPEAKER_00]: that tiny man was
[01:52:16] [SPEAKER_00]: talking to Luca and he was there
[01:52:18] [SPEAKER_00]: talking about a mozzarella flavored balloon
[01:52:20] [SPEAKER_00]: and I was like see no one wants to eat this food
[01:52:22] [SPEAKER_00]: who's eating this food
[01:52:23] [SPEAKER_00]: nobody wants a mozzarella flavored balloon
[01:52:28] [SPEAKER_00]: and I don't know why they had
[01:52:31] [SPEAKER_00]: dwelled
[01:52:32] [SPEAKER_00]: dwelled spent so much time
[01:52:35] [SPEAKER_00]: talking with these people that none of us care about
[01:52:37] [SPEAKER_00]: and the other thing I wanted to say
[01:52:40] [SPEAKER_00]: was
[01:52:41] [SPEAKER_00]: I guess one thing
[01:52:43] [SPEAKER_00]: about Chef Andrea Terry
[01:52:45] [SPEAKER_00]: she said she spent seven years
[01:52:47] [SPEAKER_00]: working in a pub in Britain
[01:52:50] [SPEAKER_00]: and she saw children become
[01:52:52] [SPEAKER_00]: teenagers become parents themselves
[01:52:54] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah that seems like it says
[01:52:55] [SPEAKER_00]: how quickly Lucy to people in the UK
[01:52:58] [SPEAKER_00]: grow up and
[01:53:00] [SPEAKER_00]: reproduce because
[01:53:01] [SPEAKER_00]: she was only there for seven years and she saw
[01:53:03] [SPEAKER_00]: people grow and have their own families
[01:53:05] [SPEAKER_00]: how fast are your kids growing up
[01:53:07] [SPEAKER_00]: over there
[01:53:09] [SPEAKER_00]: and finally I think it's
[01:53:14] [SPEAKER_00]: so Karmie has these two
[01:53:15] [SPEAKER_00]: chefs that he is supposed to be
[01:53:19] [SPEAKER_00]: like
[01:53:19] [SPEAKER_00]: the devil on one shoulder
[01:53:21] [SPEAKER_00]: and the angel on the other so he has Terry
[01:53:23] [SPEAKER_00]: and then Joel McHale
[01:53:25] [SPEAKER_00]: and he's letting Joel McHale
[01:53:28] [SPEAKER_00]: win
[01:53:29] [SPEAKER_00]: and it reminds me of the dynamic in whiplash
[01:53:31] [SPEAKER_00]: between the kid drummer
[01:53:33] [SPEAKER_00]: and the scared drum teacher
[01:53:35] [SPEAKER_00]: who's really abusive and really terrible but in the end
[01:53:38] [SPEAKER_00]: the kid
[01:53:39] [SPEAKER_00]: picks him over the nice person
[01:53:41] [SPEAKER_00]: who loves him because
[01:53:44] [SPEAKER_00]: that's where the real learning is
[01:53:45] [SPEAKER_00]: and also
[01:53:48] [SPEAKER_00]: it's very reminiscent
[01:53:49] [SPEAKER_00]: of selling your soul to the devil to get what you want
[01:53:51] [SPEAKER_00]: and then you regret what you got
[01:53:53] [SPEAKER_00]: so I hope they explore that more in the next season
[01:53:55] [SPEAKER_00]: okay thank you very much
[01:53:57] [SPEAKER_00]: and for allowing me to ramble okay bye
[01:54:00] [SPEAKER_02]: aww amazing Jenny
[01:54:00] [SPEAKER_02]: so in the UK
[01:54:02] [SPEAKER_02]: do you get married and then seven years later
[01:54:05] [SPEAKER_02]: you've usually produced some
[01:54:07] [SPEAKER_02]: Benjamin Buttoning children
[01:54:09] [SPEAKER_02]: and they kind of go backwards don't they
[01:54:11] [SPEAKER_02]: so they're married with kids within a couple years
[01:54:13] [SPEAKER_01]: the good news is that a lot of
[01:54:14] [SPEAKER_01]: pubs will rent themselves out as wedding venues
[01:54:16] [SPEAKER_01]: for a very reasonable price so you can really
[01:54:18] [SPEAKER_01]: do most of the cycle
[01:54:19] [SPEAKER_02]: I feel like we don't mention our grandchildren enough
[01:54:22] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah absolutely
[01:54:25] [SPEAKER_01]: they're grandchildren
[01:54:26] [SPEAKER_02]: they're lovely I would say that generation's better
[01:54:30] [SPEAKER_02]: aw Jenny it's always so good to hear from you
[01:54:32] [SPEAKER_02]: and yeah Matt Matheson with his
[01:54:35] [SPEAKER_02]: Canadian accent it's just lovely
[01:54:37] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm looking forward to getting
[01:54:38] [SPEAKER_02]: thinking maybe we could do an episode on his cook cook
[01:54:40] [SPEAKER_02]: because it's pretty interesting I mean it's very meat
[01:54:43] [SPEAKER_02]: forward I would say
[01:54:43] [SPEAKER_02]: but he does a lot of
[01:54:46] [SPEAKER_02]: knowing that Jenny has access to the library
[01:54:48] [SPEAKER_02]: being an amazing librarian
[01:54:50] [SPEAKER_02]: his cookbook you've read a bit more of it
[01:54:52] [SPEAKER_02]: than I have at this point but it's a lot about
[01:54:54] [SPEAKER_02]: different provinces in Canada that he spent
[01:54:56] [SPEAKER_02]: time in so there's stuff about PEI
[01:54:58] [SPEAKER_02]: it's Newfoundland
[01:55:00] [SPEAKER_01]: it's a process family and growing up
[01:55:03] [SPEAKER_02]: I think you dig it there's a lot
[01:55:04] [SPEAKER_02]: of kind of stories in there about growing up
[01:55:06] [SPEAKER_02]: in Canada and whatnot
[01:55:07] [SPEAKER_02]: um
[01:55:10] [SPEAKER_02]: Yurtle the turtle has sent me
[01:55:11] [SPEAKER_02]: he's such a little turtle man
[01:55:13] [SPEAKER_02]: I can't his little face
[01:55:15] [SPEAKER_02]: oh my goodness Jeremy Allen White
[01:55:17] [SPEAKER_02]: he did smash it in this episode
[01:55:19] [SPEAKER_02]: this is the thing is like I'm so down on Karmie's character
[01:55:22] [SPEAKER_02]: because I do agree
[01:55:23] [SPEAKER_02]: with all of those criticisms of him
[01:55:25] [SPEAKER_02]: but he is so good in this role
[01:55:27] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah yeah he completely
[01:55:29] [SPEAKER_01]: he completely sells Karmie
[01:55:31] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah he really does
[01:55:34] [SPEAKER_02]: alright that is season 3
[01:55:36] [SPEAKER_02]: of the bear that is our show

[01:55:59] [SPEAKER_02]: I love giving you this bit because you just don't sound sincere about
[01:56:02] [SPEAKER_02]: any of these you're just like you can watch
[01:56:04] [SPEAKER_02]: dead cast
[01:56:05] [SPEAKER_01]: I've never sounded sincere about anything about that
[01:56:07] [SPEAKER_02]: no yes there's a walking dead rewatch happening
[01:56:09] [SPEAKER_02]: with Jason and an amazing co-host
[01:56:12] [SPEAKER_02]: me
[01:56:13] [SPEAKER_02]: did they get Karen back?
[01:56:14] [SPEAKER_02]: no it's me
[01:56:16] [SPEAKER_02]: hi
[01:56:19] [SPEAKER_01]: rings of power is back with Anwin and Penny

[01:56:25] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah
[01:56:27] [SPEAKER_02]: and for our next episode we
[01:56:29] [SPEAKER_02]: we just don't know what it's going to be about
[01:56:31] [SPEAKER_02]: but we think we'll make the beef sandwich
[01:56:33] [SPEAKER_02]: and talk about the season overall
[01:56:34] [SPEAKER_02]: and maybe answer some listener questions if you have any
[01:56:37] [SPEAKER_02]: so quickly questions
[01:56:39] [SPEAKER_02]: questions about our cats
[01:56:41] [SPEAKER_02]: questions about
[01:56:43] [SPEAKER_02]: what it's like having Benjamin Button and grandchildren
[01:56:45] [SPEAKER_02]: in your mid 30s
[01:56:46] [SPEAKER_02]: things that you want to know, we'll answer
[01:56:49] [SPEAKER_02]: this has been a pleasure
[01:56:50] [SPEAKER_02]: it has indeed
[01:56:51] [SPEAKER_02]: it really tried my patience having to wait
[01:56:55] [SPEAKER_02]: to finish the season so long after everyone else
[01:56:57] [SPEAKER_02]: but here we are
[01:56:58] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah it was an interesting exercise in welfare
[01:57:00] [SPEAKER_01]: didn't read any spoilers
[01:57:01] [SPEAKER_01]: how did you manage that?
[01:57:03] [SPEAKER_02]: well I read that accident a little bit about Josh Hartnett where I thought he was a murderer
[01:57:06] [SPEAKER_02]: subplot this season
[01:57:07] [SPEAKER_02]: he did
[01:57:08] [SPEAKER_02]: it added a whole freesong to the thing
[01:57:10] [SPEAKER_02]: alright, that is our show
[01:57:12] [SPEAKER_01]: thanks for listening
[01:57:14] [SPEAKER_01]: let it rip
